It’s The Crystal Maze Christmas Special this evening

By | December 14, 2017

Nine o’clock on Channel 4, and to be fair they’ve gone all out for it, Christmassy remixed music, a wassailling gag, snow, the works. Tom Davis is funny in it too. The tone still feels well off but it’s probably the best episode of the reboot.

There’s already been a little bit of discussion of it in the original Crystal Maze thread and I hate split discussions, but I didn’t come up with the bloody scheduling decisions so we will have to make do.

It looks like OnePlus have stopped sponsoring it, if watching it on Thanks 4 is anything to go by.

Edit: Ha ha, wrong again.

Sorry for the repost i accidently posted in Taskmaster section.
i have just watched back the Futuristic zone and & continuity occured. When Nicola came out ofthe room pay attention to the middle door section. The door panel controller quite clearly opened too early as you see them sneakly close them back up.

Also Paypal adverts have returned. There is no sign of a return date yet so at the earliest Feb i predict. We know Hunted is back in Jan.

It didn’t seem to trend at all on Twitter, with the caveat that Twitter’s a rubbish guide for the popularity of anything. Interested to see numbers tomorrow.

          Crikey.

As much as I dislike many of the decisions made with the reboot, I do think with the effort they went to it deserved slightly better.

I felt like this special they gave them practically all the easy games. 2of3 ALIS weren’t really automatic lock ins. That final laser beam just seems way too quick. I also figured the lasers would turn off when she placed the snowflakes in like the other maze.

The new game looked confusing to start with maybe because of the layout, might’ve worked better if it was on a plinth, and the camera angles didn’t help (and the big jump cut).

Otherwise it was a good team but I wasn’t that excited by it, and it’s the first Crystal Maze episode since 1992 that I’ve not seen either early or Live I think, that sort of says alot about how they’re scheduling this, should’ve been Xmas Eve and not 11 days before. Feels like they’ve ran out of faith

Really enjoyed this episode – they just seemed to put a lot of love into it. Such a shame C4 have killed off the biggest TV revivals in years with some poor scheduling, but hopefully it’ll at least get a second series. C4 seem to have a habit though of axing low rating shows I love and keeping low rated shows I can’t stand – still baffled as to host Toast of London is still going.

Whilst I agree it was scheduled terribly, the fact remains there were 2.5m people willing to watch it there at the beginning and now it’s lucky to get 1m. That’s not scheduling, it’s because it’s just not a must-watch show.

Does anyone else think they just didn’t modernise enough? The sets were an improvement from the originals, the music was needed. But the whole thing needed to be more cinematic and exciting? Especially when it came to selling internationally where there would have been no effection for the original?

Indeed I do. The transfer of zones was the final nail in the coffin. You could of built an external track for the cuttaway and then glued that into the show at least it would feel right.

The Future Zone is the stand out and that’s the only one they changed up completely. Otherwise though I don’t think it’s too big an issue – for me I can’t fault the host or the production, and even the moans like lack of games and playing zones out of order aren’t going to be things that hit the ratings.

I think it was a mistake to lead with the celebrity specials and have so many – some were good, like the Christmas one, but most were just unnecessary and the show is a celebrity in it’s own right.

Yeah 5 was too many but they did raise over 50K for SU2C. However if 3 were done one for the start, one for the midseason break & one at the end plus raise the pot by 10k on each level they could of been better.

I think the main issue is that this is an action-adventure show that happens to take place on a TV studio set, while they’ve made the show with the impression that it’s a studio game show that happens to feature a lot of pointless running.
