Show Discussion: The Wave

By | January 14, 2018

Weekdays, 8pm,
W

We asked W, the channel formally known as Watch, to give us a wave, and they literally have!

The Wave sees couples fly out to Portugal to CHALLENGE THE VERY OCEAN ITSELF in a game of knowledge and endurance – one of them will swim out to pontoons with increasing amounts of cash on them, at each one there is a question – get the question right and money is added to their belt. Get the question wrong and a weight is added instead. Meanwhile their partner is answering questions on the beach with Rylan Clark-Neal to earn more swim time for their partner. The Swimmer is coached and advised by professional Olympic swimmer Kerry-Anne Payne. When The Swimmer thinks they’ve gone as far as they can they must race back to the beach before the time runs out to keep the money. There’s £12,000 up for grabs.

Will Mother Nature help or hinder? This actually sounds like quite a fun idea on paper, hopefully the execution is there. Perhaps it’ll be Watch‘s biggest quiz success since Bother’s Bar rollercoaster favourite Scream If You Know The Answer with Duncan James.

Shows are an hour long, looks like they’re only on Monday to Friday this week. Watched it? Let us know what you thought in the comments.

Sounds like a show I wouldn’t mind watching once a week, but I’m not sure I’ll want to watch it every day this week.

Seems a bit brutal – add money for correct answers, weight for incorrect answers. Guess the game is over then either when they’ve won the money or the contestant drowns.

That seems… interesting. But it also seems like something that would make a great challenge on The Mole, but would it hold up as its own show…? Also, not really knowing how much inter-Euro travel is, but if 12000 is the *max* prize, doesn’t it kinda feel like the average prize might be equal to what it’d cost to get the people out there? It’s like the trip itself to play is the prize.

Don’t most TV shows pay for flights and accomodation for the contestants?

Yeah. I meant, they’re already getting something (the vacation to seaside Portugal), so playing for 12000 doesn’t seem as big as comparison.

Yes, expenses are usually comped in the UK.

Also it doesn’t cost anything like £12,000 to fly to Portugal.

I actually discovered too late I don’t actually have access to W, and it’s not on UKTV Play, so I’ve not had a chance to W yet.

I sadly watched this last night and without saying much for those who have not watched yet, put it this way the casting for this must have been all those who couldn’t get on Love Island or the new show coming to ITV2 Survival of the Fittest (You know where this is going!!) and you could describe their IQ as “dumber than spit”.

Saying that though I actually kinda like the format but Rylan could have done something a lot better than this.

For me defo 5/10 and that’s being kind!!

I’d love to see this but I also don’t have access to W. If anyone finds it available anywhere else I’d be interested to see it.

Why isn’t the ‘W’ channel on UKTV Play? Very odd just to pick four of your channels to put online…
