I thought this was something that would never work as a celeb version, simply due to the logistical issues of getting that many celebrities together. I suppose it’s not a huge time commitment, though.

      The Celebrity Event Horizon.

I can’t imagine it’d be that difficult although it’d obviously not be A-List, it’d be two days filming max and it’ll probably be “available” celebs of the Strictly/Big Brother variety. Interested to see who they get though. Also interested to see how far they push the “one wrong answer means you’re out for the rest of the episode” angle, with just 18 contestants I think you’d expect everyone to be knocked out or sitting in a final seat once or twice.

I suppose there’s another question; whether in this format a *win* eliminates you from the pack for subsequent episodes, and therefore do they still have some celebs waiting in the wings to sub in…

Mmm, it’s a good question. I wonder how they’d decide? Some sort of drawing presumably, but also presumably you want to make sure your bigger names definitely get on most of the episodes.

I guess everyone’s suppressed the memory of the run-before-it-could-walk editions of Celebrity Benchmark already, even though they aired under 2 and a half years ago? There are 17 celebs listed for that on iMDb (excluding the host), but I think the list is incomplete there.

It also mentions in the press release that regular Impossible has been renewed for series 4, and Curious Creatures for series 2.

Curious Creatures was truly dreadful. 30 minutes of total non-entertainment. Some remarkably awful decisions being made by the BBC lately.

Really didn’t expect to see Curious Creatures recommissioned, but so glad to hear it! It’s an enjoyable half-hour of naturalist nonsense 🙂

Those wacky Russians have released the first episode of their homemade version of 1000 Heartbeats. (It appears to be, somewhat incongruously, a Christmas episode.) English subtitles are available.

I cannot work out how official or unofficial it is. It’s nicely done for the budget though, although clearly the quartet don’t seem to be playing.

It’s testament to how good the original game is, and how much I miss it, that even though I knew it would have few or no surprises, I watched it through in full, unlike (almost?) all the other Russian versions of shows. It’s fun to note the Vernon Kay connection – Big Vern hosting this in the UK, and hosting the adapted-from-a-Russian-original Million Dollar Mind Game in the US

Considering the Russian penchant for high-brow and high production values, I am rather hoping that someone sneakily shows them The Genius and catches their eye much as the show caught ours…

Worth watching just to hear some bits of music that don’t usually get used (even on Paul’s YouTube channel).

I have been exploring the shallowest depths of a rabbit hole. It transpires that there appears to be a gameshows.ru community with a (Russian-language, obvs.) forum that probably blows anything in the Western world away. (One of the moderators uses a usericon of a smirking Vernon Kay, which is… quite surprising.) There appears to be an ongoing effort to keep digitised versions of game shows online on all manner of different sharing services which have rather less of a copyright culture than YouTube. They all seem to be quite happy to watch English-language shows without subtitles, or non-English-language shows with English-language subtitles, which somewhat puts most of us to shame, or at least reflects what a privilege it is to have grown up with English as a first language. Happily they seem to have a taste for the more game-ish game shows and a very healthy respect for UK formats, which is a real vote of confidence.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there were gameshows.ru forum readers following the Bar. If so, welcome; you’re very, very good, and somewhat scary.

The start of this particular rabbit hole was discovering another YouTube channel entitled UzumakiPlayroom with lots of game shows from around the world, at least for now. I strongly suspect that many of them have cropped up on other channels already, but the more the merrier, and YouTube probably isn’t going to be able to whack all the rats. Likely to be of most interest to Bar patrons – though I would imagine that it’s quite likely that anyone who’s interested in it in theory has found it before – is only the first episode of the French original version of Fort Boyard.

The Russia community actually have a huge amount of love for Fort Boyard 🙂

Have been enjoying ‘Beat the Box’ on VOX in Germany – good fun! – seems like something Channel 4 could do daily in the Come Dine with Me style slot.

Oh I see, it’s people doing kind of pocket-sized Schlag… style challenges in reality sort of format. Interesting.

Yes, there are 4 couples / groups that play the games each week (some are already known reality stars). 8 games each worth 50 euros in your pot. The last game gives you the chance to double your winnings.

The challenges have been quite fun so far. A range of quiz style challenges to physical tasks you can set up easily at home to have a go too, should you so desire (I will admit to wondering across my kitchen blindfolded to try and hit an upside down saucepan with a spoon…)

The joys of You Tube screengrabs. It’s one for all you tv channel logo anoraks – It may have been on the ABC, but that angle also has the Channel Nine ‘silver balls’ logo behind the contestants head..
