Thinking

By | May 21, 2018

Not a great deal going on on TV this week, but on Youtube new Tom Scott/David Bodycombe co-prod Lateral begins a six part run from Thursday. It’s the sort of thing you might enjoy if you enjoyed the short run of Bother’s Bar Does Что? Где? Когда? from a little while ago as it’s that sort of thing.

Edit: Ooh here’s a turn-up, the recently filmed celebrity specials of The Crystal Maze are going out in June. 30 new games promised. Which means there are three series one episodes still to be shown and six civilian series two episodes to go out at some point. And another celeb special, I think.

Although you do have to think they’re pissing in the wind at this point, it seems pretty clear that to retain continuity pretty much all of the criticisms of the first series that the audience has rejected will still be there.

I quite enjoyed this episode of Question of Sport, available on iPlayer until Thursday, which is a compilation of selected questions from series over recent years, many of which in this episode could be considered somewhat carrot-in-a-box. Phil Tufnell and Matt Dawson are not in my top handful of QoS captains over the years, but the show has kept itself fresh by showing tremendous willingness to reinvent itself over time, even if this has recently been by ripping off bits of other shows.

Got to take what you can get!

Katie Price and Bez are doing an episode together? She’s not going to stop until she’s done something with every other Celebrity Big Brother winner, is she?

Out of those announced episodes. I’m expecting the Katie Price episode will be the lowest. Everyone hates her. It will be interesting to see if these score the highest viewer ratings as it seems everyone love a “celebrity” even if that scrapes the definition.

Also let’s see if Fizz have learned their mistake of showing off too many games early. Otherwise the civilian run of episodes will face the disappointing figures we recently seen.

Are you sure there’s another series one celebrity edition to go out? I thought there were only five celebrity editions in series one, the first four plus the Christmas special.

In French news, after a sudden cancellation of the next season of Survivor (due to sexual misconduct from one of the contestants after only four days of tapings) , TF1 is looking for a new format to fill up the schedule. Rumors are talking about some kind of Ninja Warrior on trampolines called Big Bounce Battle :

It’s… a thing. Quite a missed opportunity not calling it Big Bounce Castle and going all through the absurde way but I guess someone will try to sell that in the UK as “The Bump”

Wow….that’s twice a season has had to be scrapped..

Speaking of Survivor, the US version had a first in its finale last night- the final vote ended in a tie. There were three finalists and 10 Jury members, and the vote was split 5-5-0. The tiebreak was the finalist not involved in the tie cast the deciding vote.

The tie was revealed at filming (and that made it a giveaway that it would be a tie- otherwise they would have done the vote announcement in the live portion of the finale), but the final vote wasn’t revealed until the live section (so the only non-production person who technically knew who had definitely won was the person who voted). First time in 20+ seasons they’ve had to go to this (the first few years it was a two person final with an odd number of votes so no ties were possible)

I don’t suppose there’s any reason the three finalists couldn’t cast a vote alongside the jurors, making sure they don’t vote for themselves. Although I’m not sure how well it would film.

Cant say I was a big fan of the whole Ghost Island “twist” seemed just an excuse for producer interfering. Though risking your vote for the chance to win something is similar to an idea I had for an idol that protects you but loses your voting power for that vote. It could be used in a couple of ways to save somebody or hurt an alliance.

Teamwork, my favourite Prosieben attempt to make the best out of the end of Schlag den Raab will come back in the summer as well as a new series of Schlag den Star. A bit surprising given SdH has okay ratings and the fatigue might set in even quicker with SdS around, but Prosieben has no other shows suitable for the slot right now (apart from Joko and Klaas’s ones but just Duell um die Welt is having good ratings).

What format Schlag den Star? Summerpaus-format or Full-Schlag-format?

It is two celebrities against each other, but the number of games and whether this is live has not been announced yet.
