It’s the Taskmaster Final tonight

By | July 4, 2018

I said I reckoned Liza Tarbuck would win it before the series started, it looks like that bet is coming good now.

Presumably we’ll be very close to an official S7 cast announcement as you can now get tickets to that set of recordings, recording 19th to 25th July at Pinewood.

Edit:

Series 7 line-up revealed!

  • James Acaster
  • Jessica Knappett
  • Phil Wang
  • Kerry A Godliman
  • Rhod Gilbert

Acaster and Gilbert the only names I’m familiar with (although I’ve heard of Wang), I look forward to finding out about the others in due course.

Very deserved winner in Liza, even though I was #TeamLevine.

The S7 cast though? I know…three of them, and dislike two of those three, so that’ll be fun.

I know Acaster and Gilbert. I sort of know that Phil Wang is a comic but I’ve not seen any of his work, I don’t know the women at all. Not very woke, but there we are. I like Acaster, I’m OK with Gilbert – I can predict what he’ll bring to the table.

Like I always say, Taskmaster has a habit of making my opinions on people much more positive.

Liza was the correct winner, I was briefly Team Levine, but I understand why she was towards the bottom most weeks. Asim seemed like a nice guy if only sporadically funny, Russell and Tim were Russell and Tim, for better or worse.

Great final of Taskmaster. Liza Tarbuck was a very deserving winner.

Smallish FYI (non-TM related) – provisional schedules for the week beginning 16th July have !mpossible at 5.15pm instead of Pointless. First time in ages that Pointless hasn’t been the teatime quiz. When did it take over from The Weakest Link?

I’d also heard of Kerry Godliman, although when I tried to place exactly how, all I could come up with was that she’d done an episode of Ellie Gibson’s Scummy Mummies podcast. Drawing a blank on Jessica Knappett, although I do have a nagging feeling that she’s familiar to me from somewhere.

Ah! She did an episode of the most recent series of Go 8-bit; she was in the episode where they tried to wrangle competitive gameplay out of The Sims.

Kerry Godliman also played the AI in Rob Beckett’s Playing For Time (Sponsored By GAME)

And – as I’ve since discovered – DI Sleet’s ex-wife in the final (pseudo-clip-showy) episode of the second series of Murder in Successville.

Most of the episodes have made me laugh and all of them have made me smile. They certainly saved a very good one until the very end. I suspect this hasn’t been the best series of Taskmaster, but it was certainly easily good enough and I’m looking forward to the next… and to Liza Tarbuck in the Champion of Champions. More work for Liza Tarbuck and Alice Levine, please!

I have a theory that the series of Taskmaster take on the character of their contestants to some extent, and a suspicion that my favourite has been Ryan / Richardson / Osman in series two.

I was wondering if there was a ‘real’ solution to that task, delighted that there was and it was so simple!

In hindsight, there was a bit of a hint in that the mannequin still counted as a single item even after it fell apart, so it stands to reason that that would have applied to the other objects on the table. I have to admit, I hadn’t realised that the ‘placement zone’ at the top came right up to the fence.

I wondered if it was possible to just put the box over the balls whilst still in the starting gate.

    A slightly crazy Taskmaster theory.

You might recall this interview with Alex Horne about Taskmaster on Digital Spy from three years ago – specifically, three years ago to the day tomorrow. There is a specific quote: “I was keen to have people who you didn’t need to produce in any way, we didn’t have writers telling them what to do, they’re just using their brains. Not slagging off celebrities, but if you suddenly have a long-jumper in there it might be difficult, so I think five fresh stand-ups [next time].

Fair enough. Random example of a non-stand-up, right, a long-jumper, as opposed to anything specific… surely? Fast forward to two days ago and this interview with about-to-retire long-jumper Greg Rutherford, which touches upon how many non-sporting TV shows Greg has appeared upon, in preparation for (he hopes) more TV work after retirement. The interview links to Rutherford’s IMDB page; he did a fair number of what might reasonably be considered comedy game shows after his 2012 gold.

So my crazy theory: did Greg Rutherford put himself forward for Taskmaster back in 2015?
