Mastermind is looking for contestants

By | April 1, 2019

And auditions are happening NOW! Go go go!

This will be the show’s first series made by independent production companies and filming in Northern Ireland, but John Humphrys is staying on.

In State of the Bar news, I’m off work this week so posts will likely be sparse this week unless something very exciting comes up although I’ll be around, obviously. There is no Bother’s Bar April Fool joke this year, sorry.

Heard decent things about the question writers on this series. Good looking and funny, too.

Well, in “Probably not April Fools”, seems like there will be some night episodes of FB France this year.

Love how they light the fort, and make it so atmospheric in these episodes.
(Also gotta say my favourite filming format’s always been “Main game during the day, treasure room at night”)

      HURRAH!

I always thought they should do the key games during sunset and everything else at night. Suspect it’d be a ballache to get the lighting levels right though.

I think I’ve said this before, but I’m hoping that Hat Trick and Hindsight undo some of the changes of the last few years – which to me have felt like changes for change’s sake.

Re-recording “Approaching Menace”? I have a lot of respect for the BBC Philharmonic, but the original version was and still is timeless. The blue line around the contestant’s score as the round ends? I like that Dave Clark on LAM calls it the “blue line of death”, but it *was* more thrilling when the contestant was closing in on a winning score and you weren’t sure when the beep-beep-beep-beep would come (whereas now, when they need 24 to win and they’ve reached 22 when the blue line starts to appear, you *know* that there’s only time for two more questions and they must get both of them right – which *does* take away at least some of the thrill). Having each contestant leave the studio after their specialist round, and reminding only the viewers of the scores before the GK rounds (by briefly flashing them up on the screen)? Now, *these* two changes are the ones I would like undone more than any of the others – I saw no merit in them at all when they were introduced at the start of the current series, and I still don’t.

When Hat Trick and Hindsight won the tender, it was reported that they planned to return the ‘Mind to its roots – so it’s certainly possible that they *will* undo at least one of these changes. Even if they don’t, there’s bound to be at least one change of some sort in the next series – aside, of course, from the change in location.
