Paul Darrow

By | June 3, 2019

Bother’s Bar is upset to learn about the passing of the actor Paul Darrow this morning. Most people will know him as Avon from Blake’s 7, but we’ll always remember him as hosting and commentating on incredible early 2000s endurance competition Hercules, giving it a real sense of gravitas and tone.

The show was produced by Bother’s Bar’s favourite wayward son Gary Monaghan, and ages he ago he officially uploaded an episode to Youtube. It’s one towards the end, but it’s an epic pyramid building challenge.

Shame. When I heard the news of Mr Darrows untimely passing, wasn’t his role in Blake’s 7, but his anchoring of Hercules.

I loved that show, even now when I hear the eventual winner commenting on competive winter pursuits on Eurosport, I find myself saying out loud, Paul Dallow in tone and volume – “MIKE DIXXONN”

Guess for budget reasons why it never got another series, but Paul was the perfect host for it with the most perfect balance of false bombast and deadpan irony.

    Sleep well, Mr Darrow.

I was having a brief chat with Chris Curley (@chriscurleyman) on Twitter, currently Comedy Central head of development but also one of the producers of this (which I didn’t realise) and suggested he was “A lovely man to work with and in those vo sessions for Hercules we always had a giggle.” So there we are.

Looks like it’s only up until Friday so get in quick.

I mainly feel sorry for the guy in third, who I suspect 9 times out of 10 probably wins an episode and is unlucky enough to come up against two people even better.

I think my favourite part of it is the “Picture The Idiom” category, in which they play Catchphrase. No, in fact, seeing as it wasn’t animated, they play a round of Waffle. Second favourite part: the jokey/in-jokey categories that crop up during the title sequence.

        Yay librarians!
