Gods of the Game

By | July 31, 2019

This might be quite fun, Bradley Wiggins hosting a comedy sports challenge show for Comedy Central. In it, “mortals” compete against big name sportspeople in comedy takes of their sports and are able to choose a headstart for various amounts of points.

The interest lies in that it’s a format being produced by Bother’s Bar’s favourite wayward child Gary Monaghan and Mad Monk, of excellent Wild Things and Banzai fame. Which means it’ll either be very very good or a complete shambles probably. Which will it be? I look forward to finding out.

In less exciting news, ITV Studios have bought up prominent Israeli outfit Armoza Formats, who have previously given us The Common Denominator, The Bubble, international hit Still Standing and… Babushka. So a mixed bag.

Mike Park, who you may remember as team captain of the Crystal Maze “cosplay” team, is one of the game designers on this, fun fact fans.

Edit: No he isn’t, he’s a contestant. My bad.

Interesting. I listen to Hamish & Andy (Formerly of Australian Drivetime Radio, now they have a standalone podcast which is very listenable if you like that sort of thing) and prior to the last summer olympics they took on some of their country’s olympians in a “Fair and Reasonable” sporting challenge which sounds along similar lines.

Although there was no quiz element, a lot of the fun was finding where the line was to make it a close contest and from memory a lot of the time they got pretty close. So for example could a non-olympian swim 200m in the time it took the pro to swim 400m or some such. Think there are some examples on YouTube.

Anyway, if they get the balance right in this new show then it should be good fun.

I can’t be the only one here who misread Bradley Wiggins as Bradley Walsh, right?

Despite what can be said as mediocre ratings at best, Love Island US has been renewed for a 2nd season in Summer 2020 (my guess it’s to counterprogram the Olympics plus to get back some of their investment)

It will be interesting to see how well the host works for this, as non-presenters hosting game shows tends to go badly.

I think there’s been similar charity events when, say, celebs have played tennis matches where non-tennis players get racquets whereas real tennis players get saucepans or tennis table bats.
