According to BroadcastNow in that’s-so-unsurprising news, Hare is looking at the axe. Soup, anyone?

Are they at least going to let it finish the season?

The original intention was eight episodes and a “best of”, which really seemed a bit hopeful.

Although before anyone leaps to conclusions, (1) the BBC aren’t confirming it, and (2) there’s nothing whatsoever to say they’re actually pulling it, it’s just not likely to get a recommission.

I very much doubt they’d pull it. Have the BBC ever completely pulled a show? There’d be too much possible bad PR if it did (“BBC spends licence fee on shows it doesn’t ever broadcast” etc.); dropping it to a quieter time in the schedules is the usual way.

I do hope the message gets through to the BBC that it just wasn’t very exciting to watch (with possibly the dullest, slowest end game in existence), rather than a fantasy game show is a Bad Thing.

They won’t pull the show mid-series but looking at the final listing for next Saturday 21st, it’s going to be dumped before the news, same with this Saturday. Also So You Thin You Can Dance is being moved around.

            16:35 – Don’t Scare the Hare
            17:35 – SYTYCD?
            18:45 – Doctor who
            19:30 – SYTYCD? Results
            19:55 – Who Dares Wins

Shows axed in midrun by Auntie? Sin on Saturday is the only one that springs to mind, and that was a) live and 2) almost thirty years ago.

The Beeb’s way is to shunt its useless programmes into obscure corners of the schedule – cf Drop Zone and Only Connect the radio show. Actually, Ms 4xtra controller, can we have a sample episode of that, just for the giggles?

          3. KP

Which, for “Don’t Scare The Hare”, might mean throwing it in with the kids shows. I’m convinced that the plan for that show started with “hang on, CBBC game shows are going down better with the critics than the adult shows. Let’s make a kids show with an adult budget.”

The better response: Raven in primetime.

I’m not convinced, the pilot was always designed for Saturday nights and the set was chrome and varilights.

I really think it will be battling Don’t Scare The Hare for the nation’s affections. But yes, seven episodes will be made.

I don’t think there’s been a show that’s more in sync with the concept tossed around that gets made fun of and that amateurs always think is an awesome idea: “Pick a square and win money.” I get the idea of clues that come down the line, but really, if I understood the rules correctly before, you just pick a square…and then you get money if it’s good.

I could possibly see an attraction if people actually fell through trapdoors, but as this doesn’t seem to be case I’m wondering what is this *for*?

If nothing else I suspect this is going to make the end of year poll a bit more interesting. So thanks ITV!

Next thing you know they’ll want to make a show about building a wall or gold bars, or something.

          3. Brig Bother Post author

That sounds highly improbable, but could be brilliant!

            (Note to readers: in joke).

Surely, surely we are due a Knock Your Block Off revival? That show was aces.

Hells yeah, to continue the trend for inexplicable pluralisations.

Would it be for kids on the ground that it’s a great format inherently or would it be aged up nearly thirty years to play the nostalgia card for people who remember its short but glorious run?

I really want to play it as it looked tremendous fun, but watching it would do. Sadly it must be one of the less practicable shows for a garage remake.

Although it was the American pilot I saw, I can’t imagine the game being any better in an English accent…perhaps – if Jeremy Kyle is hosting it, as someone suggested, there’s an opportunity for a bit of fun with the format…line up 7 people, one who’s monogamous and 6 who are proven cheats according to JKs lie detectors…and the player gets to ask each one a question, then bet cash on who they think is a good boy or girl…then, in this ‘ Cash or Cad’ round, the cheats fall through trap doors one by one…

…then, there’s the ‘ Pay D.N.A.’ round, matching children to rows of parents by facial recognition / ‘ooohhh, he’s got your chin’ vibes…as the money goes up, the kids get younger until – for the jackpot – the contestant has to match a scan to a picture of a deadbeat dad…

…and the big money finale…’ Golden Graham’s Grotto of Greed’, where the legendary counsellor helps you match the benefit to the complaint…see what you can screw out of the system but beware – if you push your luck too far you lose the lot!

Bit of product placement from the Daily Mail, and you’ve cracked it!

Old episodes of Pointless start on Challenge, May 30th.

Hardly groundbreaking but nice to see some investment in the channel line-up finally.

I’m hoping Challenge will repeat the never repeated first series.

If you look at it, since Sky had control over the channel earlier this year, we have had new episodes of…

      Eggheads
      In It to Win It
      8 Out of 10 Cats
      Ninja Warrior
      and now Pointless

We’ve also seen Ginx Files and Gameface jump from Bravo and looking at the listings, we will be seeing the final series of Bob Monkhouse’s Wipeout and Sky 1’s Blockbusters in the next fortnight.

It looks very much like Virgin knew it was going to sell Challenge et al for quite some time, so it made little sense to spend money on new content.

Any idea when the rest of season 4 is showing on the Beeb? As great as it’ll be to see Pointless on Challenge, there’s not an awful lot of point in both BBC2 and Challenge showing repeats of the same show, surely? Although I guess Eggheads might just be proving me wrong?

I’ve got more details about the gameshow that’s (not) taking Italy by storm, Parole Crociate!

there are two contestants, one a returning champion, playing with a 16×10 crossword board. the challenger goes first and picks a definition to solve. sometimes definitions are replaced by rebus puzzles, anagrams, or have the aid of a video or sound clip. if the contestant solves correctly, and none of the solution’s letters were on a “special square” s/he gets another turn. Otherwise, the turn goes to the other player. If the solution inclueds a special square, something happens.

special squares come in three types:

GREEN: (5 on the board) the player gets 1 point. first to 3 points win the game. the player also loses the turn (because “like in football, when you score a goal, the other team gets to kick off”)

YELLOW: (3 on the board) the player just loses the turn.

RED: (2 on the board) not only the player loses the turn, but if the player has at least one point, s/he must answer a tough question to avoid having to forfeit 1 of his or her points to the opponent

first to 3 points win. the loser receives whatever a “Crossword Kit” is, while the winner plays the Target game for a Tablet PC.

this game works a bit like Chain Reaction:

the contestant has to complete a 15-words chain, with only the first and the last word revealed.
the contestant has 60 seconds to find the other words from a list of 19 (five are useless) in the correct order.

a word is correct if it fulfills any of these requirements:
-has 1 more, less or different letter from the previous word (HOOD/HOOK, SPEAK/PEAK)

-is a synonym or antonym of the previous word (HOT/COLD)

-is an anagram of the previous word (ARMY/MARY)

-is somehow related to the previous word (DICE/ROLL, DONALD/DUCK, DIRTY/DOZEN)

after a mistake, the player must restart from scratch. I don’t know if the player retires after winning the prize because none has beaten this game yet.

the host is the very average Daniele Bossari.

the nice touch: when a colored square is revealed, the studio turns into that color a la Colour of Money.

This is very bad news. High Stakes is a poor format. Control was much better but High Stakes has the advantage of being made in-house 🙁

The ton of money ITV give to independent prod cos on Saturday night indicates that this is not really a huge concern for them. I’m sure they’d rather have a hit show no matter who makes it. Rather 50% of something than 100% of nothing.

Channel 4 have gotten all excited about commissioning “Quiz Trippers”, which David Clark mentioned a while back: http://bit.ly/jmiLbW (Ooooh, look at the Head of Channel 4 daytime, posing like she’s about to host something. I suppose that would cut costs.)

There are some that give away £200+. I go to one at a private club in London where everyone sticks in £10 for stake money and the winning team of 5 can easily win £350 (with 2nd and 3rd place prizes too).

That said, by far the majority of them offer half a barrel of beer (about 4 pints each).
