The Bank Job

By | December 2, 2011

Just a quickie, the The Bank Job game is now online, for your chance to go on the show in January.

This is quite a fun game but at the same time extraordinarily frustrating:

  • Two of you in a vault with 25 safety deposit boxes. Inside each one is either an amount of cash, a ‘steal’ or nothing at all. The total cash equals £200,000.
  • You both begin with 45 seconds on the clock. One of you is asked a multiple choice question. A right answer stops the clock and allows you to pick a box. A wrong answer means you get another question.
  • The amount of money in the box is added to your case. You can then choose to either leave or play on. If you leave, you can’t accumulate any more cash, but i can’t be stolen either.
  • Then your opponent gets to go.
  • If you pick a “steal”, you automatically take the largest bundle of cash your opponent has.
  • The winner is the person who escapes the vault with the most money. You can’t leave if your opponent has left and you’ve got less, and you lose if you run out of time.

To qualify for the show you have to win two games during an alloted tournament slot.

It’s fun, unless you keep getting relentlessly unlucky with the boxes (I hit three £0s in the space of three questions, the next game against TV’s Daniel Peake I hit two large amounts of cash only to have them immediately stolen away, NNGH). Also there’s something correct yet *not quite right* about not being able to steal from people who have left, it means it’s quite difficult to catch up sometimes because the Steals become £0s effectively. Maybe give them a chance to pick again?

yes, quite a few times i’ve found myself in a cash chase after my opponent has had a particularly big steal

I’ve played 3 games so far and won 2 of them. I was in the lead over a bloke, and he got a Steal, which took over £20k off me. I was then in a cash chase to try and find a large box, but kept getting small ones. A VERY fun game, though, and I’ll keep an eye out for any Bother’s Bar punters in the game. My nickname’s ‘Keshihead’, so you’ll know it’s me if you come against me.

Played 4 and won 2 (1 defeat saw my opponent steal 3 times and over 50k) Touch wood I get an audition!

    This is fun!

Will the concept of the show be that only the person who leaves with the most money actually gets to keep it?

The TV show version switches to 4 players. According to the release sent today the day’s winner takes the cash they won to the final and everyone else leaves with nothing. On the final, sixth game, all five champion’s banks are combined and the champion leaves with it all. So up to £1M can be won but it’ll be probably somewhere between £100K and £200K, probably on the upper level of that scale.

It’s quite fun to play, It’s also earned my first application for a gameshow although I’ll be surprised if it goes any further! I’ll be interested to see how the show works on the TV. It seems to me like it could work well as a sort of duel to earn time, and then an endgame played by the person with the most time. I believe it will just be nothing but head-to-head rounds.

Had a go for the last 10 minutes. Managed to win 4 out of 5 games but 1 game was won by default as my opponent simply disconnected from the game.

One problem I have is the clock ticks down a good 3 seconds before the three options are revealed. Therefore if you’re still chasing the money with 5 seconds to go. Either you’ll be quick and lucky and get the next question right or you will run out of time.

The game is telling me if you answer two games during the tournament it will unlock the application. I wonder if the applications Endemol will sift through and choose will reflect on what your game stats says?

Also I believe the ex-Endemol employee on here was determined the show was going to be changed and called The Bank Raid instead? 😉

Well it sort of makes sense- think of it as the time it takes for the host to read the question out before you can answer.

Obviously it’s going to be somewhat different than the actual show is going to be like, but it’s pretty fun to play.

I get that it will be different on television but I agree with Travis that as far as the online game goes, if you’ve got 5 seconds or less left on the clock you simply cannot answer fast enough, even if you don’t even look at the answers and just click one. It’s a little frustrating strategy-wise as you can only really work with 40 seconds rather than 45.

Yes, and I also recall a permanent ban was promised should this turn out to be the case…

I am now Elite and have filled out the form. My stats are like this at the moment:

    Total winnings – £236,500
    Biggest win – £49,500
    Win Ratio – 6/12
    Tournament wins – 4/5
    Winning Streak – 3

    Unlucky 83% Lucky
    Dunce 61% Genius
    Cautious 79% Risky
    Tortoise 100% Hare
    Foolish 100% Strategic

You’ll have to boost that win ratio up as I’m currently on played 12, lost 3. 75% success rate. 😉

Looking through the application form it’s the standard affair. It’s not that difficult to claim the Elite status since you have to win ANY two games in the tournament and not two in a row.

I suspect they’ll go down the Million Pound Drop criteria route and select similar people for The Bank Job.

Yeah, I seem to have a tendency to jump and click the wrong answers!

I have had a couple of dippy opponents, though. The last game I played, I left the vault with £20,000 and 4 seconds to go, so I knew I couldn’t answer another question in time. My opponent had £23,000 and 24 seconds to go. They eventually got one right, leaving 8 seconds to go and they found a £32,000 bundle, taking them to £55,000. Now, logic would dictate that they would then leave and claim the victory, but no! She played on, got the next question wrong and ran out of time on the next one, giving me the victory by default!!!

Also I notice the questions are being repeated a few times. I think I have seen five/six questions being repeated.

Saw the same question crop up in the two games I played. Also both games had people lucking out severely and exiting the vaul with £70k, leaving me chasing it with four seconds left.

    Bah.

Hah, my first two games in a row I fell to the same exact scenario. Namely, hubris. Clearly outmatched my opponent (the same person both times in fact) by getting a few answers very quickly early on, then she struggled and her timer ran out and I had an easy victory which I played out for extra cash.. but when my timer was at 10 seconds I chose to play another question and got the first wrong, and when it came to answer the second question I clicked the correct answer just as the timer was at one second but it didn’t register in time and I was locked out.

Too bad I’m a Yank and can’t try to get on the show proper, this is good fun.

I have played 7 games and won them all. However i will admit that twice i have been faced with players that do not know what to do.

By the way, I wondered about the prospect of a tie – well they’ve averted that because if one player has left and you have the same amount as them, you can’t walk away. So every game will have a clear winner.

That situation came up for me with just a few seconds left in a game I played earlier (fortunately I got one more question right and got money from it).

I don’t get why, but I had a really bad run yesterday. My opponent had left with over £30,000 in their stash, and I had something like 41 seconds left on my clock. I got my questions right, but my run of boxes went £0, Steal, £0, £0, £12k to take me to within a couple of thousand of winning, and got another Steal on my last box. It’s like as soon as your opponent leaves the vault, you get all the crap boxes!!!

That’s why I reckon if you get a Steal you should have the option to pick another box. If it’s a £0 then so be it.

Some details from a commenter on buzzerblog (Obviously no idea on validity)

Apprantely the clocks are 2 mins long and steal’s only come into play in the final head to head

I do like the steal element, but the highest amount should be allowed to cross over to your opponents case just the once.

I had a game yesterday where I went first, answered a question correctly, opened the vault with £34,000 and then both of us preceeded for the next 3 questions to find a Steal vault and my £34,000 kept crossing between mine and my opponents case.

Got dull and frustrating very quickly.

Just had a good session, won 4 games on the bounce taking me to a 16/22 win ratio, and got a new high score of £73,000.

Just managed to get my win ratio to 6/8 tonight. After losing my first two games I’m very happy. Although I was exceptionally lucky in my final game. I went on a horrible run of questions and managed to answer one with 3 seconds to go to put me £8,000 in front. Knowing how long the questions take to reveal the answers I left the vault.
Luckily my opponent who still had 23 seconds hit two steals, a £0 box and a £7,500 box with their remaining correct answers!

It’s certainly an addictive online game and I look forward to seeing how it plays out on TV.

You’d think they’d sort out this obvious bug in the game, wouldn’t they? I think the timer shouldn’t start until the 3 options appear as it wastes 3 seconds with each question.

I’m kinda glad it doesn’t start when the choices appear. If it did, then you could just click as fast as possible and not lose more than a couple of seconds per turn, even with a bunch of wrong answers. Games would be insanely long then, and real thickos would find it a lot easier to win by sheer luck.

You’re absolutely right, it’s supposed to be a game about knowledge, skill and judgement to win big, not a luck-fest like other shows.

In other news, I’ve heard back from Challenge’s Blockbusters! They want to get me and my best mate/teammate in for an audition next week!

I am officially the most unlucky person in the world.

Cannot count how many times I’ve gotten steals on the first turn before my opponent had gone OR once they’ve already left. And lots and lots of zeroes. I routinely outplay my opponent as far as trivia goes but I just can’t get the right numbers to win.

Provisional schedules for the first week of 2012 have arrived, and show The Bank Job being stripped at 10pm.

These provisional schedules don’t include Channel 5, so I’ve no idea if it’s up against Celebrity Big Brother.

absolute joke somebody got down to 3 seconds with me thirty thousand up and got the question right but refused to pick a box leaving me with the repetitive music for half an hour, until i had to quit, luckily it was only a friendly but still counts feel cheated really

Are you sure you didn’t just lose your connection for a moment? I know there’s a timer for picking your box (though I don’t know what happens when it runs out), and that when I lose my connection it just basically stays in one state until I refresh, like in your case.

Just checked. When the timer runs out, the games picks a random box for you.
