Victoria Coren-Mitchell WINS!

By | April 20, 2014

Congrats to Vicky C-M who won just shy of €500,000 in the main event of the European Poker Tour this evening, having been shortstacked for most of it (in fact sitting down as THE short stack at the beginning of the final table) but being patient and making the most of her chances. She becomes the first person to win TWO EPT main events.

Relatedly, Only Connect‘s on BBC4 tomorrow, and they start filming the BBC2 series very soon.

If you had been watching the EPT coverage all day like I have and have been bitten by the bug, come and play in the next Bother’s Bar game two weeks tonight on May 4th. It’s a pretty friendly game, and all the details can be found here.

There’s a grand final in Monaco next week she might get a free entry to (I don’t know how the EPT works), but there will still be hundreds of players. It’s more of an end of season special really.

I don’ think she gets free entry – its just a big money tourney (10k Euro buyin +600 entry fee)

Cheers, I’m sure one of the big tours gives a buy-in to main event winners but evidently not the EPT.

Apparently the Daily Mail are saying Miranda Hart is to present the Generation Game, though I believe it’s a pilot rather than a series at present.

And in a Format Doormat: Class Warfare – Two classes from nearby schools (Go for one public and one state for added title meaning) compete against each other at a miniature war game.

That is, in all seriousness, better than 95% of the ideas in the MIP catalogue. You should work it up.

There were some gems from MIP this year: Vanilla Ice Goes Amish, The Shower (i.e. singing in a shower), and Dolphins With The Stars.

The company I working for right now has bought the rights for “The Shower” in Germany and I just can’t understand why. Unfortunately there’s no one in my department who can help me… It seems too absurd for German television to me.

Like a lot of these things, the idea is quite funny for an episode, but then people realise that actually it’s an entire series and then it’s not quite so funny.

They might just be buying the option just to stop anyone else having it. Many MANY shows are bought at these markets but never actually made into a series.

Could work as a Raab-type special, I guess?

I don’t know if anyone has come across this before, but I’ve just found this awesome Cube website. It’s in French, but has all the info on the UK version too:
    http://www.lecubetv.com

They need to make that an official site. It’s amazing.

Truly amazing. The section on the games is, by itself, astoundingly comprehensive and full of enough statistics to satisfy even the most nerdy fan. Also has video clips of The Body demos, but only for games that aired in France.

Good fun seeing everybody’s favourite Jeopardy computer as a clue on OC.

Wouldn’t’ve expected Dave getting OC over Challenge.

Was Wonga ever played to a clock? Because it once went on for 27 minutes, so…

Speaking of The Cube, Sunday’s episode from Dubai features a very rare event. Full episode here, apparently not geoblocked, although the default video player might squeeze the horizontal:

Our Russian gameshow friends also have the video at their site.

So, a while back, the question was asked: Will the change in question editors affect Only Connect?

I’m too lazy to go back and watch 100+ episodes again, but wasn’t this week the first time that -both- teams zonked out on their Connecting Walls? They seemed unusually nasty, especially for a first-round match. (At least they seemed equally nasty.)

(Then again, I don’t know why they didn’t just keep picking Apple products until they hit the right combination, especially with time almost gone.)

Five episodes in, I’m inclined to say “A bit, but not all that much”. Certainly there have been plenty of fun questions and a couple of questions that you get the impression wouldn’t quite have passed muster. I think there’s not quite as practiced an eye at estimating question material difficulty, too. Nevertheless, it’s still an excellent show.

Really I just want someone (that’s in the sense of “anyone”, not in the sense of “a particular someone”) to be catty about it anyway.
