Exciting daytime news!

By | April 23, 2014

It’s ALL GO:

  • Ejector Seat starts on ITV on Monday.
  • Draw It! The show based on briefly popular several years ago app Draw Something and recorded aaaagggggeeesss ago FINALLY airs in the 4:30pm slot on Channel 4 from the 5th May.
  • Richard Osman is fronting thirty episodes of a new Endemol daytime quiz for the BBC called Two Tribes, where people with a common interest are grouped to compete in a quickfire quiz. (Edit: seven contestants take a big questionaire and are grouped however, there’s a 60 second buzzer quiz, the losing team has a shootout to determine who is eliminated, split the remaining players along new lines, rinse, repeat. I hope it’s going to be funny, because everyone will start whinging when it gets to 3 vs 2 and 2 vs 1.) To apply email twotribes@endemoluk.com.

So there we are.

Ooh, interesting. Two Tribes is exactly the same as something I had in mind some years ago. Mine was a bit bigger scale, more Saturday night, but worked on the same principles. I was going to split people up according to things like hair colour, birthday (Jan-Jun or July-Dec), height, sex and so on. I had one or more representatives playing games on behalf of their ‘half’ to decide which side went through, but otherwise it sounds very similar.

Be interesting to see how they’ve got it to work. I felt my version was strong because the team (and maybe the audience) would usually have a good stake in which side they want to win. But I’m not sure a quickfire quiz is the best way to decide who wins – I felt games would be a better way of proving/disproving tropes like whether men or women are better at spatial games etc. etc.

I accidentally stumbled upon a PDF excerpt of that idea, but couldn’t remember the site address.

Erm, I stuck up a PDF of my take on Five Minutes to a Fortune, I don’t think I ever pitched this particular idea to anyone. (As such, I should stress that Endemol’s show is entirely their own work.)

Looking forward to Draw It, I always liked Win, Lose or Draw so this should be right up my street!

I suspect the fact it’s an hour long and features fewer celebs to bounce off is probably not going to work in its favour, shall we say.

Auditioned for this last year, as Pictionary is one of my all-time favourite board games and ripe with comedic possibilities.

Two mistakes, with hindsight – I ended up drawing fiendishly quickly and raced ahead and I was a bit too keen to stick up my hand when the group was asked if anyone had any telly experience. (Out of a group of twelve, it was only me!) On that particular day, I got the sense they were simply looking for hopeless artists, not Tony Harts. (Would the following people please stay behind.. etc etc)

Will still watch the show, but I have to say I was disappointed not to have a chance of drawing Leonardo Di caprio with wolf ears. If only you could mindread the casting producers..

In Germany “Ticket ins Abenteuer” (Ticket for the/an adventure) was announced. It’s the first time in a while I really liked the idea so here it is:
2 friends are brought to a big city somewhere in the world (e.g. Rome, Tel Aviv, Istanbul) and they don’t really know what to expect. Then they are given 50€ to survive 4 days. If they manage to do that, they have the chance to spend 7 days in a luxury hotel. But there’s a catch: In the first four days the get a list with a lot of luxury hotels of that city. They will face challenges to get rid of some. In the best case only two hotels will be left in the end. If they manage to get to the right one in time, they won the week in the luxury hotel, if they don’t, they are going home to Germany.

I’m afraid they will all try to be couchsurfing and then most of the fun will be gone, but the rest sounds interesting to me.

I might post some daytime gossip / opinions this evening, if time allows. Definitely a lot going on at the moment. In the meantime have yesterday’s ratings:

    The Chase 2.96m (26%)
    Pointless 2.79m (23%)
    Tipping Point 1.79m (23%)
    Perfection 1.03m (18%)
    Eggheads 0.93m (6%)
Come Dine With Me 0.65m (5%)
Deal or No Deal 0.49m (7%)
    Countdown 0.36m (7%)
    Fifteen to One 0.36m (4%)

It’s been interesting watching repeats of Pointless. I got out of the habit of watching it a couple of years ago and only started again recently. They’ve improved it so much.

Interesting to note that not only is 15-2-1 the same as Countdown but is share is so much lower.

What are the other 96% of the audience watching at that time?

Well it was getting 650k two weeks ago. It is warming up, numbers are down a bit across the board (which is to be expected, except for Perfection which defies physics apparently).
