Show Discussion: Two Tribes

Richard Osman goes it alone for a new light BBC2 quiz where players are split along personality lines for each round of rapid fire quizzing.

We’ve seen a couple of episodes being filmed. We’re of the mind that it’s an OK format  likely to do well because of Osman’s presence and lots of questions in the time slot. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Credit to BBC continuity for getting in a ‘This isn’t pointless’ joke faster than anyone expected.

Well, that was a decent little quiz, a MUCH better offering than The 21st Question. Even though it’s only a half an hour long show, they still get through plenty of questions.

How long before we get some up-to-date Pointless episodes with Richard making a joke about how he’d best get over to the other studio to host Two Tribes? 😀

I enjoyed this a lot as it is a quiz with lots of questions asked. Makes Eggheads or Tipping Point look very slow paced. Not enough quizzes are 30 minutes long. The end game reminded me of Playing for Time with Eamonn Holmes. Overall a very good format in my opinion.

That has some pace, some game to it and some personality. A rare combination and a pleasant surprise. Far from an all-time top ten show, but I’m calling it as a shoo-in for this year’s Hall of Fame.

Nothing more to add to the audacious and joyful game Two Tribes is. I rate it a 8/10.

Interesting they didn’t stop the clocks in the final – wonder if they didn’t do it that episode or they edited it out. Correctly.

Otherwise not much to add from the recording review – fun show, lots of questions, wouldn’t do half as well if it was Nick Knowles (say) hosting. But he isn’t, so that’s all to the good.

Really enjoyed this. However I miss Richard not having somebody to have banter with. It felt a bit odd on his own and while he tried to get some going with the contestants it did not quite work. However The show was good and i think the format is a winner. It is about time we had a 30 minute format in a 30 minute slot

I liked it! The central mechanic is good, and I like how many of the questions are things most people could get after 2 or 3 guesses so it suits the format. The lighting is good too – that ‘lights out’ thing is surprisingly hard to do. Good mix of banter and game.

If I had to criticise anything, I think the initial voiceover could sound a bit more exciting, and I’m not a fan of chess clock end games because they’re only exciting at the end and then only if the scores are close; they could be better with a bit more thought. The prize choice works differently to what I was initially told.

    Nice show overall.

I think it’s also a show that’s technically quite hard to host, lots of names and answers and situations to keep track of at speed.

1.57m/10.0% for ep 1, about half a mill above Eggheads in the 6pm slot at the moment. It will be interesting to see how it does once the curiosity factor has worn off, I don’t think there’s too much reason to believe it will drop very far if at all.

So, I’ve watched Two Tribes and I can’t really add anything that would improve the gameplay.

Given how much Endemol productions love VT inserts of contestants, I thought we would at least see the contestants peering into the murky gloom of a laptop or tick boxes on a wad of A4 paper when doing the Two Tribes survey..

..Heck if The Mole and It’s Not What You Know showed that proceedure – why not Two Tribes even for 5 seconds at the start of every show?

The show is easy to watch – the format perfectly understandable no matter where you join the show – and pleasingly – we finally get a daytime quizshow were the winner actually gets a moderate prize every day.

How long before we hear rumblings of a celebrity version to with the £1,000 prize for charity to run over Christmas, I wonder?

I think the prize is very nicely judged; it’s enough to give a kid a treat, but not enough to push this past being very light entertainment. It will be interesting to see how much of an advantage the team of three has over the team of two in the third round in practice – but if there’s just one grand’s worth of prize money split between seven, you know that people are there mostly for a laugh. Generally very good contestants so far too.

There’s something about Pointless that makes me feel dumb when I watch it, in a way that I don’t get even when I’ve gone 0-for-12 on Only Connect. Furthermore, I’m not quite sold on the thought of Richard Osman as a man-of-the-people Great Geek Hero with integrity through and through, though in truth this is probably more backlash for the sake of backlash, against a standard of my own creation rather than his, than anything else. Nevertheless, I’d much rather watch Two Tribes than the big P.

Episode two was quite a bit funnier and exciting than episode one I thought.

Also another run straight through for the final, so I’m guessing the pauses are being edited out, because it would be a bit weird having episodes with them in now.

Just watched yesterday’s episode (Episode 18) and they DID stop the final half way through – not seen enough episodes to say whether or not this was a one off or not.

OK – Strange that they do it sometimes and not others – you’d think they’d do it every time or not at all. (“Not at all” being the correct answer…!)

The quizzing mechanics were fine, and I’ll always enjoy rapid-fire quiz shows, but it’s nothing special.

I didn’t like how they randomly chose the categories to split by. Letting a contestant choose from multiple options would add another layer of strategy to the game.

Nice idea, but that would makea vastly complicated process even more complicated. You have to tenements that no matter what happens in the earlier part of the game, it must always be possible to split them 2-2 in the final. If you allow choices, it might be possible to end up in a logical dead end.

Yeah, I guessed practical concerns were the main reason for not doing it, along with believing that unbalanced teams would make poor television and diminish the quiz element.

But it’s still somewhat disappointing they couldn’t figure it out as the show feels too artificial and arbitrary for my taste.

Yesterday’s numbers courtesy of Richard Osman:

    Tipping Point: 1.76m
Gift Wrapped: 1.38m (both include +1)

    Pointless: 3.06m
Two Tribes: 1.37m (BBC2’s biggest share of the day at 9.5%)
    Eggheads 1.04m

Quite a drop for Two Tribes actually, which is a shame as it was a better episode.

A second programme of any show is likely to be lower than the first. Anything well north of 1 million would count as a success.

I think it fair to point out that whilst I said in the recording review that it’s a light show and as such probably won’t watch every day, I *have* actually watched all week.

I’ve been enjoying this all week too! Clear, concise format that actually fits its timeslot, gets through plenty of questions (around 50-60 I should think), and has the added benefit that the contestant banter is actually relevant to the show, so you learn more about the players without it feeling like unnecessary ‘filler’ chat that we see in a lot of the other more time-stretched formats.

Love this quiz. Fast & exciting. Love Richard Osman – he’s cleverly witty. However – the prize is rubbish…. winner deserves better.

Here’s irony – after watching two weeks of this, gong back to Pointless makes it seem a bit empty and not as fun.

Hi I have just had my show on TV on 24th February. Whilst I loved doing it I feel I was most unfortunate on a buzzer question.

The question was where are the ATP finals held in Britain?

My opponent, Elias gave his first answer as Millennium Dome which he then changed to 02 arena. Richard acknowledged he was just in time, and correct as the Millennium Stadium is now the 02 stadium.

It changed its name in 2007, yet the finals were not held there until 2009 which means my opponents FIRST answer was incorrect as they were never held at the Mill Dome and he should have been out of the show.

I feel there is little point in contacting them as it just looks like sour grapes but I welcome the chance to put my feelings down on this site. So, thanks

Not sure I agree, if I’m honest. It’s changed name for sponsorship reasons but I would be inclined to allow Millennium Stadium.

Err..the Millennium Stadium is in Cardiff. The Millennium Dome is in London…
Personally, the 02 arena would have been the only answer on the card I would have accepted, given the ATP has been held there since the sponsorship of the place kicked in.

Well, it’s still the same building. Would you only accept “North Greenwich Arena” if the question was about where the 2012 Olympics gymnastics tournament was held? I think the essence of the question is about the location, really, not the name of it.

          1. David B

Indeed. Arsenal’s stadium is called “Arsenal Stadium” by UEFA but the Emirates locally. And for the question “Where did Manchester City play their 2014 Premiership home matches?”, would you insist on “Etihad Stadium” instead of “City of Manchester Stadium”?

          2. Mart With A Y Not An I

So, by the same logic would you allow the answer to “What is the name of ITV’s weekday breakfast show called?”
            GMTV?

Because, it was previously called that name – and some people probably still call Good Morning Britain that.

Sports stadia names mixed in with naming rights don’t make good examples, but if those questions were on my adjudication watch, then the only allowed answers would be “The Emirates”, and “The Etihad” or “Etihad Stadium” as that is what they are called now (crucial bit), and are known as such by most football fans reguardless of if they support the teams that play there or not. Ask an Aresnal fan where they are off to on a home game matchday and it’ll be “off to the Emirates”.

..and yes, if the question was “Where was the opening and closing ceremonies and track and field events held for the 2002 Commonwealth games held” and the contestant answered “The Etihad Stadium” = wrong. It wasn’t called that during the games, the renaming only came later between the reconstruction from the Commonwealths and Man City moving in from from Maine Road, and the disclamer would be on the hosts card/monitor/tablet pad saying as such.

In my opinion it is a rubbish show. When the 1st series ended I assumed that the BBC had scrapped it but then it came back again. When is it going to end – can’t wait
