I don’t want to get anyone too excited but it appears Idiotape have a new album out

By | September 2, 2014

We’ve just been alerted to the fact that ingenious Korean electro soundtrackers to Bother’s Bar favourite The Genius Idiotape have a new album out called Tours, and fully expect everyone to check it out.

I’ll add a direct iTunes link when I get in later. Other music services are available. (Edit: “Album not available in UK stores” apparently, although the individual songs are. Hmm.)

In other news Celebrity Squares starts next Wednesday:

And Only Connect beat 2m last night. Well done everybody.

Invasion or not, Series 5 of The Cube in Ukraine premiered Monday night, still using the original-format set:

Wow, that new Structure one looks like a good difficult one. I think as Cube games go, only Maze has a longer time limit.

Another really bizarre new game is Telescope, played by the second contestant of the night (separate file on YouTube).

Also: I continue to be a fan of the real-time game stats fake-“projected” onto the side of the cube. Surprised no other versions have done this.

I like how in Succession we get a proper display of how close they are to the end. You’d think in a game that is quasi-futuristic and almost clinical in its precision would give you the stats like that. The only time they’ve ever done that is when they played Balance once in Series 1 and accidentally left a timer onscreen.

Also oh wow, that Telescope one is silly.

Also if anyone’s fluent in Ukrainian and knows what that third lifeline is?

I THINK it’s just a ‘walk away’, but I’m not sure.

Transcribing the text into a translator got me ‘Player Substitution’

          3. Lucas F

It’s Swap the Player – the player switches places with one of their friends sitting in the audience, that person however has to perform the task until he/she gets it right or loses all lifes.

And when they say “switches,” they really mean it: quite the little Star Trek-ish transporter effect. (Monday’s third contestant used it, at about 15:30 of the third video.)

I’m sorry I didn’t write in a long time, but my Samsung can’t post things on this website. So now I’m using my computer to show you “Quizonkel.tv” by Jörg Pilawa. It’s the 3 part show, that alters its format every week. The first show was “Dein Einsatz, Promi!” (Your Bet, Celebrity!) which can be seen here http://mediathek.daserste.de/tv/Quizonkel-TV/Dein-Einsatz-Promi/Das-Erste/Video?documentId=23072284&topRessort=tv&bcastId=23042084
In round one there are 7 celebrities playing quiz duels to get to the next round. They each bet their “own money” and win their opponent’s if they succeed. When six celebrities have played, the seventh will face the celebrity who lost with the smallest difference.
In the next round the successful four celebrities have four lives each. The person whose turn it is, hears the category and chooses the opponent who is the least likely to know anything about this topic. Get three wrong and your out, the money goes to the person who chose you to answer. The last one standing gets to play the final.
In the final the player gets two minutes to answer 15 questions correctly. When the get one wrong they start with the first question again (like in AuA). If the player succeeds, he double his current amount of 56,000 and wins 128,000. The show dragged a bit, but the final is worth a watch.

The second episode was “Die Superchance”. Four students try to win one rich man’s money (50,000€) for a project they have started. It starts with each player playing 1 minute on their special subject. The one with the least points gets to play first in the second round.
In the second round there are 10 question without time limit. They each have 2 right answers (e.g. What’s the name of the flatmates in the striped shirts on sesame street?- Ernie and Bert.), so you could get a maximum of 20 points. The person with the least points at the end of this round leaves.
The third round is meant to be the final. There are three categories and the one with the most points may choose his first. He then plays a duel on this subject against a celebrity who claims to be an expert on this subject. The idea is that just one player will win the duel. Unfortunately it turns out, the “experts” weren’t that good, so more than one player survived.
Therefore they had to play an extra round to find the winner. The three players were standing next to each other with the one with the least points on the left. Then they had to answer open questions in turns. The last person who didn’t get a single question wrong, won the money.
The show also dragged and the “rich man” was really unnecessary. Still you can watch it here http://mediathek.daserste.de/tv/Quizonkel-TV/Die-Superchance/Das-Erste/Video?documentId=23194046&topRessort=tv&bcastId=23042084

I’m really looking forward to the last episode “Die acht Stufen” (The eight steps) which sounds a bit like the chase. There are three people who “know it all” and who try to win against a player who tries to climb eight steps. The set is hideous, but I hope this format is a bit more exciting than the others.

Quite good celebrities on that first one, although not expecting it to be almost two hours. I quite enjoyed the Jauch gag that opened the show.

I quite like the basic idea behind Promi, but there’s no way it should be two hours. I think you could get a fairly decent mid-quality quiz out if it if you condensed it to 60 minutes. Three duels and no wildcard duel would knock 15 minutes off for a start.

I also would either have people start with fewer lives or force people to keep facing questions on a category until they get one right or run out of lives in round two.

Don’t really care for the inheritance aspect in the knockout round, the last one standing is always going to end with €64,000 unless I’ve missed something so it’s pointless. Money does confer an advantage when head to head in the various versions of The Inheritance that exist internationally.

End game very clear nod to Avanti but good fun and worked well EXCEPT the genius of the Freeze in Avanti is that there’s no point where the game becomes unwinnable whereas on a fixed limit if someome stuffs up in the last X seconds then they might as well not bother with the rest. The easiest way round is to go to sudden death when the clock hits zero I think.

            Good music throughout the show.

The last episode was broadcast on Thursday. “Die acht Stufen” was by far the best in my opinion. There were one player at a time. In the beginning s/he answered 5 open questions each worth 2000€. One of them was worth 4000€, they could choose which one was meant to be it in advance (without knowing anything about the question). In the second half of each play they were shown a question and they could choose one of three experts to play this question against. The experts were comedian and know-it-all Bernhard Hoecker, journalist and breakfast television host Anne Gesthuysen and the first ever German millionaire winner professor Eckhard Freise. You may only choose each expert three times in total. The goal is to answer 8 questions correctly and earn as much money as possible. The player chose how much money they would bet on each question (max. 10,000€). If they got it right and the expert was wrong, they won double the amount bet. If both got the question right, the amount bet was added to the pot. If both got it wrong, the amount bet was subtracted from the total and if the expert was right and the player was wrong, they’ve substracted double the amount.
Get 3 questions wrong or lose all the money and you’re out.
That’s it. Quiet simple and worth a watch, though the slot was way too long for the show and the experts got boring after a while.
