The Chase USA is on Challenge tonight

By | October 13, 2014

From 8pm.

Also the new and fully deserved second series of 15-1 starts today at 3pm on Channel 4. Yay. There’s no real quiz competition at that time so it’s got no excuses.

I won’t be watching the opening episode of 15-1 today mainly because I am on it!.

I still think having the show 1 hour long is dragging it out somewhat though.

If there’s one thing British quiz show fans *love* it’s American quiz questions.

I also note it’s up against University Challenge and Only Connect, which you’d expect all the quiz nerds to be watching first anyway.

Challenge are repeating series two of Celebrity Poker Club at the moment. Series one had some horrible fake ’70s dinner party inserts, but series two is classy. Episode one had Johnny Vegas, very probably several pints ahead of the rest of the table, straddling the line between staying in character and playing himself; episode two last night has a very young (2005!) Alexander Armstrong and Claudia Winkelman having a lot of fun, in a very, very minor classic.

I rather enjoyed it on Sunday night. The first series was won by Vicki Coren (which isn’t a surprise given she’s now the only 2 time EPT main event winner)

Not the worst start for FtO – pretty much bang on slot average. Suspect Hounds’ drop was mostly to do with Made in Chelsea returning on E4. And look how much Tipping Point boosts The Chase.

I don’t get Challenge ratings, so nothing for Chase USA I’m afraid.

      Thanks Paul.

Crikey The Chase US is a bit tedious when it’s not played by half decent people. I don’t get why they decided to open with that episode (where Mark only just manages to reach the target of a whopping 10, having apparently to throw a question on when the next leap year is – come on guys, at least make it believable – for previous judging reasons) when the one they opened the series up with in the US seemed half decent. And all the “coming up” suspense padding, urgh.

Makes me wonder whether Challenge is airing them in production order, whereas GSN originally aired them out-of-order. That’s the only way I can rationalise them showing such an unappealing first.

That was the first show recorded, it took six hours to film including an hour on my final chase, and lessons were very quickly learned. There are a lot of great episodes to come I promise 🙂

On both British and US versions we sometimes give a “nearly” answer which is not correct but far too close to throw it over to the opposition. So the accepted procedure is to throw that question out and automatically answer “PASS” to the next question up to give the contestants a chance to earn a push back.

This is done on the orders of the adjudicator, who informs the contestants that this will be happening.

Unfortunately for last nights show, the next question was “When is the next leap year?” ……

You see this came up on Two Tribes as well, and the problem is it looks really silly, stupid even, certainly unbelievable. I still don’t see what the real problem is with having an emergency set of questions so one of roughly equivalent difficulty can be added in for this sort of situation.

That is what we do in the UK, the Americans unfortunately were not ready for this eventuality. They are now 🙂

We’re having a ton of problems at the Bar today, I do apologize and hope normal service will resume shortly.

The first episode was the joint highest-rating show on Challenge for that week, level with WWTBAM, according to the BARB charts:

    Mon 13th: 202k
    Thu 16th: 132k
    Fri 17th: 144k

Others were below 128k. I’m not sure if these include +1 or not.
