It’s the C21 Format Awards nominations!

By | March 30, 2015

Read them and weep.

The Link‘s going to win best studio gameshow isn’t it? Despite everything. Keep It In The Family is probably the best show in that sorry bunch but that’s hardly a ringing endorsement.

Meanwhile ITV Studios’ boring Quiz Duel and Talpa’s underperforming Utopia are in the Best Multi-Platform award. I’ll watch the screeners for the Best Competitive Reality later.

Not sure about the others, but Are You The One? has been a little successful for MTV- they’ve already aired two seasons, and a third is on the way. The concept is even a little interesting- take 10 men and 10 women, subject all of them to extensive personality exams, and through that information and interviews with matchmakers the producers come up with the 10 “perfect” matches- and all the 20 players have to do is figure out what they are to split $1,000,000 among them while they live in a tropical locale. Of course hijinks ensue when there’s conflict between the organic matches they form and the “perfect” matches they need to find….

Quiz Duel is based on a popular app and launched as a TV show in Germany last year. In it, five studio contestants compete against THE NATION to win a large-ish cash prize, who are competing live on the app.

There’s some chat about it here:

The app’s called Quiz Clash in the UK.

It’s currently on ARD, so you might yet be able to find it on their Mediathek. It seems to be doing OK for the channel.

I believe that ITV Global Entertainment are representing the format internationally. Or if not they have something else very similar (and also German) on their books.

It sounds like the German version of The Chase is replacing it for 35 episodes though, it’s trebles for ITV Studios all round!

These awards are “Award for best show who paid to enter the judging procedure” so it’s a somewhat self-selecting list.

A rather sad thing is that the Rose d’Or – which used to be a jolly week of lounging around Lake Geneva in the springtime with talks, drinks parties and an awards evening – is now reduced to one evening in London.

Well, after many years in the business, I can finally reveal that I have a commissioned game show to call my own.

It’s a witty take on a celebrity quiz, called ‘UnBieberable’. Vlogging and YouTube celebrities join the ‘studio’ virtually as they have to determine whether reported celebrity stories are actually true or completely incorrect. The first question is always about Justin Bieber.

A celebrity guest joins in each episode. In ‘We Know What You Did Last In The Sun’, can the contestants figure out the guest’s identity based on snippets of stories reported about them in the tabloids?

In another round, ‘Wall of Lies’, the contestants have to decide which three stories are true, which three are false, and which have an element of truth.

The show ends in the frantic ‘Log Off and Die’ – complete the missing word in a given celebrity news story headline… but with a twist! If you get a question wrong, your video call will be terminated. The one remaining contestant gets 7 seconds to plug anything they like.

‘UnBieberable’ will run for 12 episodes on Jill, the new female-skewing sister channel to Dave, being launched next month. Host TBA.

Sorry that I wasn’t able to mention this before, but due to press embargoes I was only able to announce it today. More information coming this after noon.

Well best of luck with that, although I have to say I wouldn’t have commissioned this because I can’t work out what ‘UnBieberAble’ is a pun on.

You know what they say in commissioning circles: ‘if it ain’t a pun, it just ain’t done’.

It was originally called “Un-Belieber-able” (as in ‘unbelievable’) but the commissioners thought people wouldn’t get the Justin Bieber reference. But I’m happy either way!

You see that’s what I’d have gone with because it’s also got the word ‘lie’ in the middle of it, which is sort of what the show’s about. Obviously in the titles you would have to highlight that in red, or use a slightly different font for those letters. That in itself would add 10% to its share.

But I don’t work in television so what do I know?

Good luck with that David. I guess with how long programmes take to make in TV land we’ll be seeing the first episode exactly a year today?
