Things Recording Variously

  • C4 afternoon quiz Benchmark with Paddy McGuinness films on weekdays up in Salford for the next fortnight, details SRO Audiences.
  • A pilot for a show called The Money Box with John Thomson films in Salford on 1st May. The blurb makes it sound a little bit like Bother’s Bar favourite 19 Keys, although I’m sure it’s very different. Details SRO.
  • Name That Tune is filming again on Thursday 30th April in London. Details Applause Store.

FOTB Stuart Shawcross suggests The Money Box is nothing like 19 Keys and that Benchmark is well worth a watch, although seeing as he’s responsible for it he would say that wouldn’t he?

My understanding of The Money Box is that contestants are seated in the round, the titular box sits on a rail in front of them, allowing it to move around the circle. When it stops in front of a contestant they answer questions to put money into it. Wrong answers move the Box to someone else. When the round ends the person with the box gets the chance to open it.

Obviously this info is incomplete, and I got it third hand, but I’m pretty sure it’s roughly accurate.

Just for future reference, is it common for any shows tape in mid-to-late December in the UK, or is it basically a dead zone?

That is a shame. I kind of wish ITV had gone for Boyard instead of Ninja Warrior for the pre BGT slot

Benchmark got plugged on Chatty Man by Paddy on Friday, fthey also showed a few pics of set. Appears to have a massively long video wall which looks pretty impressive. Didn’t say how the game worked.

I can’t say much but I am a contestant on Benchmark and erm it was interesting and I’m saying nothing more until my appearance on the show! šŸ˜‰

Ooh you have put me on the spot!.

I will talk more about my experience once my appearance(s) on the show is TX’ed. Probably all what I can say for now is you need an absolute s*** load of luck to win and it’s certainly something very different from your normal daytime/teatime quiz/game shows.

One thing I will say is the entire production team at Victory who make the show without doubt were some of the most professional and nicest people I’ve encountered on any quiz/game show that I’ve done over the last 13 odd years. Overall it will be one of those shows that people will either like or absolute hate with a passion.

Can’t wait to see it… when is it on?
What is your name so I can keep an eye out for you on the show?

I believe Benchmark begins June for 7 weeks (30 Civvy Shows and 5 Celeb Shows). When I find out when my show or shows are on I’ll let you know! šŸ˜‰

2.1m for Celeb Squares last night (Edit: Paul B suggesting 2.26m), which is rather poor by Sunday night ITV remake standards.

I do think they’ve improved it a little bit though – they’ve stopped shoehorning rubbish gags after every question for a start and it feels like it flows better, but I’m slightly amazed that despite everything they couldn’t get through three full rounds, especially since the last one is being effectively a speed round.

I don’t think I’ve seen this here before: Reflex got a 12-episode run in Dubai last year, and they’ve all shown up at gameshows.ru. Here’s one on YouTube:

Although I don’t speak the language, the most interesting difference appears to be that the commentary seems more serious (and much more subdued) than in the UK version.
