Cilla

Bother’s Bar notes the passing of television legend Cilla Black at 72. Most people will remember her for marshalling Blind Date, here at the Bar I don’t think I’ve ever held my breath watching a show as much as I did watching the brilliant Moment of Truth, of which there’s sadly little on Youtube:

Aww, it’s a shame the prizes don’t float away in those balloons if they fail.

The show had four seasons over here (they tried to freshen it up a bit for season three but nobody liked the changes so they reverted back for the last season), the one difference that Cilla insisted on was that the kids didn’t leave empty handed if their parent didn’t win, they’d be given some sort of money-can’t-buy prize instead.

I used to love The Moment Of Truth, scary how time seems to have flown by, 15 years?!

I notice the video was taken from Challenge, any chance they might run it again as a tribute or have the rights expired now? (Would be a shame)

In other news, rumours flying around Deal Or No Deal is facing the chop after the current contract (Summer 2016). Here’s a question, why does the media ALWAYS use that picture of Noel with the random ’83 4 56′ box formation?! Was it the competition text number or something in days gone by?

The writing’s been on the wall for DOND for a fair while, we have the longest running version in the world (bar the Italians, but that’s been on and off), everyone did very well out of it for ages and it’s reached the end of its natural shelf life, no harm no foul really.

It was pretty unbelieveable they renewed it last time – it’s been bombing for years and unlike Countdown is costing them tens of thousands in prize money every week. It’s been off air a few weeks now I think and nobody has really noticed.

Back to Cilla and she really is unparalleled in terms of female TV personalities. What is quite interesting is that unless the internet has forgotten she didn’t do much more than Blind Date and Surprise, Surprise, plus the Moment of Truth. Most big TV stars usually have a lengthy list of forgotten flops to their name as well, but I guess with two hit formats running side by side she didn’t need to be attached to them.
