Brainstorm

Thanks to everyone who took part and watched last night’s Game Night, if you want to jump to the hilarious Tipping Point electronic game bits they’re about 23 minutes in and ten minutes from the end. Not great quality I’m afraid because we were low latency, which is a shame in retrospect.

Right, thanks to David Bodycombe for the tip off, here’s the second half of fun BBC science quiz Brainstorm with Kenny Everett and Cleo Roccos from 1988, notable mainly for the final round (the Brain Drain) which we thought was a really good format for a quiz that hasn’t really been done since. Also the prospect of the Scrungeatron terrified me as a seven-year-old, in a way that only Cliffhanger off of The Price Is Right did previously.

Finally today the Ring of Fire pilot films at ITV Towers this afternoon – I applied for a ticket but wasn’t successful. Sounds like young upcoming talent Stephen Mulhern is hosting (but that’s unconfirmed), if you go feel free to tell us what it’s like (use a pseudonym if you want).

Tanto Vale is a new show coming soon in Italy! it’s the Swedish format “Bytt ar bytt”

a couple chooses an item out of 10 and they win its value which can be between €50 and €40,000

it’s going to air on DeeJay TV, hosted by Costantino Della Gherardesca. the title translates to both “might as well” and “that’s the worth”

    a picture of the studio

Last night a possible Schlag den Raab successor aired on Prosieben: Teamwork.

In Teamwork 4 celebrities compete to win money for one of their fans (hence the Teamwork). Each round has that round’s number as possible amount to be won (round 1 is worth 1,000€, round 2 is worth 2,000€,… up to round 11 which is worth 11,000€).
I haven’t seen the start of the show yet, so I can’t say how they choose which team will participate in the first round as every round is a duel between two teams only. The entire studio consists of four couchs and opposite of an area where games can be played. Team 1 is seated on the left, Team 4 is seated on the right.
Each round is a Schlag den Raab like game. So there are games with huge props and quiz/screen rounds on the buzzer.
When a Team has won a round, it doesn’t immediately get the money. A Team has to stop playing to win the money or win the next round as well. To make this a bit more interesting, there’s a banker offering money to play on. Well there really is a phone and the host (Jeannine Michaelsen of “Himmel oder Hölle”) chats with that person to know the offer. This is done quickly, no Noel-ish talk here.
For Example: Team 1 wins the 5th round. They can choose between banking this money or playing the next round to win 21,000€ for both games (including the offer made by the banker). They already now the game with some quick explanations when making this decision and the team that plays on can choose its opponents.
If Team 1 banks the money, Team 2 will have to play the game (they have no money at risk). The game always passes to the next team.
I don’t know, if the 21,000€ in my example would be immediately in the team’s bank because no team has won 2 consecutive games in this episode.

The final round is the 12th round, but instead of winning 12,000€, the victorious team will take home 100,000€ plus everything banked so far. This means that the winner of the 11th round has to risk 11,000€ to get the chance to win 100,000€ (seems like a no-brainer to me, except when your celebrity has a well-known weakness in this sort of game).

The show has little to do with teamwork. It is about knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents and in very few games the civilian will actually play with the celebrity. And there is the only real problem for me: I don’t care about which civilian wins. I didn’t even remember their names for a second.
In addition to this, the show is not live which would give it another feel, although it looks like a live show.
On the plus side are mainly great games, great celebrities in this episode (this could become a problem in the future) and actually interesting offers for the contestants to gamble. Had they all chosen to gamble and won it, they coulds have won almost 250,000€ in total (if I estimate it correctly now). I really really like it and recommend to watch this or the next episode. This episode had been a bit boring in that aspect that one celebrity had lost every game so that the others always chose them, because they “felt sorry for his fan”.

Oh, and the music act in there is unknown to everyone. But since this seems like the perfect parody of the weird trend thats lasts some yearsnow, that Folk-mystery-Schlager sells unbelievably well, there isthe rumour, this could be for the Joko and Klaas Show Mein Bester Feind.
(If you are interested in that weird music I described, you can watch “Mandalo” by Ulmo Ocin on Youtube (this is the act from the show) or Oonagh and Santiano.)

Back in ancient times we had a video recorder and I used to tape any old show. I taped an episode of Brainstorm for some reason. It was either that one posted above or the next one cos Shari was a contestant on it.

The Scungeatron is still creepy 27 years later. Some of the contestants are going through it and almost touching the sides of the door.

Speaking of Tipping Point licenced products, I express surprise that there has not yet been an official Tipping Point coin pusher made. The very Crompton family to whom the first one was attributed just over half a century ago, are apparently still in the game game and pushing pushers, at least as of a couple of years ago.
