Steam Sale

Here’s some fun that our French friend Cosser pointed out to me, an episode of La Chasse au trésor (singular, as it was then) filmed in 1980 for 1981 in Quebec where they hadn’t taken account of how the temperature changes would steam up the camera and decided it looked so poor they couldn’t broadcast it until TV5 Monde repeated the series in 1990 where it was broadcast for the first time.

Are there any other examples of shows which were filmed and never broadcast until they come up in a job lot repeat run somewhere? I’m actually convinced there are, although I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. Anyway here’s an interview with the contestants (in French).

In other news Challenge have bought the rights to the first three series of Gladiators, so that’s nice.

Of course there’s a ton of American series that are canned and then either shown in full internationally or in syndication.

Can’t think of much here though I guess a recent example would be the Surprise Surprise anniversary edition from 2002/3 that was aired for the first time this Easter (or was it Christmas?) on ITV3.

Challenge seem to have randomly switched from the Bradley Walsh era of Wheel Of Fortune to the very first series with Nicky Campbell and Angela Ekaette for the midnight double bill (Probably on at some other point in the day too).

Having never seen the first series before it was quite a shock, and honestly it feels a bit awkward, plus the wheel spins at tortoise speed!

Still, not quite as bad as Paul Hendy and Terri Seymour where it looked like they slashed the entire production budget down to 10p…

Well if Challenge ever are desperate enough (and having sat through Steve Harley shouting and gurning though an episode of Family Fued last night, we are inspecting the type of wood at the bottom of this barrel at the moment) then they could always show ‘The colour of money’ and then we’d finally get see the mythical 8th episode.

I’m sure an episode of DOND was pulled from Channel 4 a few years ago, due to a close relative death of one of the contestants right before broadcast, which was never shown, but may have been shown on Challenge.

Or was it even as many as 7 shows that stumbled out on air?

An episode of Mock the Week intended for broadcast on the 16th has never been aired and will probably air when they repeat the series ad nauseum in the same slot. Episodes of Never Mind the Buzzcocks and QI never aired on BBC2 due to the antics of Russell Brand and Jeremy Clarkson respectively. In addition, I’m sure at least two episodes of Deal or no Deal from before I started watching them (for its first few months I boycotted the channel in protest of what I thought was them axing Countdown) never aired on Channel 4.

If we’re taking about shows that were produced but never aired on the network…

You’ve got My Man Can that ITV2 did….

Here in the states HLN did 65 eps of a show based on the Heads Up app that they didn’t end up broadcasting (they’re shopping it around)..

ABC had Deal Or No Deal and taped 6 eps but never aired them before NBC got the rights to the show..

and they also did a six-episode reality show called Welcome to the Neighborhood that was pulled just before it was aired in 2005 because of complaints on the concept when the critics saw the first couple of episodes:

A group of families in a upper-class suburb (read: White, Christian families- the show was filmed in Texas) had to decide who would win a house in their cul-de-sac; the competitors were a Korean family, an African-American family, A Hispanic family, a Pagan family, a family whose mother was a stripper, a family who was religious but also were heavily into the biker culture, and a gay couple with an African-American adopted child (who actually won the house and moved in even though the show never aired)..and there were also fears that the show may have violated US federal law over fair housing at the time as well..a couple of years later a cable network offered to air the show but ABC refused.

Fear Factor Australia. Cancelled after three episodes (two in some cities due to a pre-emption), then somehow sold internationally a few years later and the full seven-episode season eventually found its way onto Youtube.

Speaking of shows that end up on Youtube, I really hope someone manages to put Gladiators up there. There’s a surprising lack of Gladiators videos available, given the show was so big for so long and in so many countries.

About La chasse au trésor an other episode from this season was shoot but no images still remain. It was in Chiapas in Mexico.

The weather conditions was awful and obliged the stoppage of the game at few minutes to the end of the emission. The next day, the second shooting was cancelled because the helicopter was requisitioned by the governor of the state of Chiapas.

Here’s the interview of Jacques Guermant candidate of this special emission : http://www.lachasseauxtresors.tv/site/exclusif/jacques_guermant/exclusif_jacques_guermant.htm
