Show Discussion: Make Me An Egghead

And so Eggheads takes its regular Summer break (does it? I don’t know) to be replaced temporarily by Make Me An Egghead, a tournament where quizzers compete to become one of two new Eggheads to replace CJ and Daphne.

To all intents and purposes it appears to be exactly the same as Are You An Egghead? from 2009 but with slightly different Eggheads in the line-up. The two players battle it out in a series of quiz rounds on the traditional Egghead categories, winning a round earns the right to pick an Egghead to help you in the final round.

We ponder if “don’t put all your Eggheads in one basket” will make a reappearance.

There’s a two-minute quickfire bonus round at the end and some kind of leaderboard system involved with it. That’s the only change.

Also there are only 3 rounds before the final instead of 5 (so not all of the Eggheads are selected), and I _think_ (but can’t properly remember) that the final was 5 questions before; it’s the standard 3 this time.

Why are there only two names on today’s leaderboard, when there have been three programmes?

Julia and Steph from The People’s Quiz fame competing on this evenings edition. I can’t believe that was 9 years ago now, and that the BBC actually allowed it to be mentioned ever again!

Both also took part on Are You an Egghead? – Steph on the first series in ’08, and Julia on the second in ’09.

And here’s a pretty big coincidence: both lost to a man in the first round, and that man lost to the eventual champion in the semi-finals. Steph lost to Dave, who lost to Barry, and Julia lost to Gary Grant, who lost to Pat.

Dave became an Egghead eventually, of course, while Gary is in the semi-finals of the men’s tournament. Were he to win, that would make the coincidence even bigger…

Unsurprisingly Steph, Julia and Gary are far from alone in having taken part on both AYAE? and MMAE. Ian Bayley is also in the men’s semis, having featured in the first series of AYAE?, while David Edwards was runner-up to Pat but fell at the first hurdle on MMAE. Diane Hallagan, Dom Tait, Said Khan, Terry Toomey (who beat Mr Edwards), Kathryn Johnson and Nic Paul are also part of this illustrious group. 😉

Possible spoiler: Gary was beaten by Gerard Mackay, so the coincidence *won’t* be even bigger.

wasn’t Julia a question setter on the chase? isn’t the chase a 12 yard produced show? just curious! nepotism is obviously rife in quizland!

I don’t know if she wrote for The Chase, but The Chase isn’t a 12 Yard show (although it is a different part of ITV Studios). I do know she’s done Pointless though, which is Endemol.
