So there we are.
Might be a bit late tonight, only just got tea on.
Pah, my AK just lost to AQ in the $1 tourney, so instead of having a decent 6000 chips, I was reduced to barely anything. Great. Then I lost the remainder with AK again (albeit against QQ this time)!
Better luck with this tourney hopefully!
Just did a double-take; apparently at 14:55 (full tilt time) there’s a BSOP satellite…
What, really? I can’t find it!
#143938328, I believe. Looks like the B actually stands for something along the lines of “Brazilian”, it would appear.
Ha, they’ve just nicked my idea.
In other news, I just spent the last 30 minutes playing on Rush Poker – actually rather good fun.
Smiffy, I looked back in the hand history just to complete the point:
Board was K 10 J, pot was 390
You checked
Turn card came an 8
You bet 60.
Brig raised to 240 and you called.
River came a 4.
So Brig was lucky to catch the 4, but your bet after the turn needed to be bigger, to find out (a) if Brig was bluffing, and (b) to see whether he had a King in his hand or not, since your Ace + 2nd pair was vunverable.
Good game, everyone. Most enjoyable banter.
Yes! Thanks very much everyone, also some top quality German banditry.
Would love to have seen what sort of result may have came up if Ronald wasn’t unfortunate to pick up KK vs AA.
I’m going to move the Easter game back one week after tonight’s discussion, but you can all buy-in for the DOUBLE STACK DOUBLE STAKE in a fortnight right now if you want.
>Would love to have seen what sort of result may have came up…
The wrong one.
Ha.
Interesting choice of Amazon advert at the top of this page: Medicine at a Glance by Patrick Davey…
I also notice that my books often appear up there, as do £600-worth of Paulson poker chips. I KNOW WHICH ARE BETTER VALUE.
Yes! The IQ Puzzle book.
Oh, you’re absolutely right – I suppose I was worried about the straight possibilities and the K overcard, but $60 was never gonna get the job done really, he had the pot odds to call with the 44 – but still gutting for it to come on the river, but as you say I opened myself up to that faint possibility.
I certainly wasn’t expecting the 4 to come up you understand, I saw the bet as weak and tried to push you off (you’ll note that I didn’t bet the river on the end precisely because of the straight possibility – you might have been trapping! Especially after you called.)
Re: the straight possibilities, you’re right – so in fact the right time to raise would really have been after the flop, while you still had a reasonable chance of being ahead and before the board had a chance to straighten.
Anyway, I’ll stop tapping at the fishtank now…
Anyway don’t feel too bad, I’ve been on your end for most of the last three-four months when it comes to the cards, it happens to all of us.
And if you want some proof…
Last year: Top 12% player.
This year so far: barely scraping the bottom 10%. Absolutely rubbish.
So, in fact I might still have won if I’d bet big on the river to represent the straight, so I got that all wrong basically. Ah well, I enjoyed the game anyway, and a great comeback from Greg, I thought I was ok for 4th at one point, just shows a shortstack still has some power in the game, in a lot of ways the decisions are clearer.
As a side note, I notice they’re doing this FTOPS ‘thing’ over the next couple of weeks – 27 events with some HUGE guarantees, most have chunky buy-ins, but there’s one next week at a fairly reasonable $12 + $1 with $250,000 guarantee at 6pm. It has quite a nice structure as you get 5000 chips and blinds every 10 mins, then increasing later to every 12 and 15 mins. The only snag is that the winner would probably have to stay up to about 3am! (but the upside of that is they would get about £25,000!)
I can’t guarantee I wouldn’t have called (because if my first weakness is triple barrelling too much, my other weakness is calling light a bit too often) but I’d have absolutely hated it. You might have been betting out a busted straight! It’s all very complex, but the main point stands that a decent sized bet on the turn and I can’t justify calling – even a re-re-raise would have been enough for me to put it down.
I’m probably giving away rather too much here. You can rest assured I won’t be re-raising weak looking bets next time
The thing about poker is that you can have the same situation but play it completely differently each time, maybe according to who you’re playing against, their chipstack, their betting patterns or just general instinct. So many variables to consider that I don’t think you can give too much away, unless you’re saying you do exactly the same thing in the same situation every time, which is unlikely…
Just realised next week is a deep stack game, which I don’t think I’ve played in before. What’s it like, and what’s the likely running time (if, say, a standard game is 90 mins?)
Looks like the blind structure is the same (10 minutes). I’d imagine it will take longer as people will have more room for manoeuvre.
You’ve never played deepstack before? Ooh!
Double the stacks does not neccessarily equate to double the running time, because the rate of blind rises increase later on, but I suggest it’s quite likely to make a second break.
The tournaments we have been played have been remarkably short – usually I’d expect the stack size : blind size ratio to be a lot higher. It seems like people want to gamble fast and furious.
With this in mind, doubling the stack size shouldn’t make a huge difference to the time of play! Just my opinion.
And by the way, good on Bananaman to come back from (I think) smallest stack to 2nd place. Nice play.
Good game, guys, and congrats to David.
