A Rose d’Or Prediction

By | July 15, 2016

Alright, this actually came out a few days ago but the full list of Rose d’Or nominations is up and the category we’re most interested in is the Game Show one, obviously.

  • Baking in the Dark – DR (Denmark)
  • Pick Me! – ITV (UK)
  • The Getaway Car – BBC (UK)

Pick Me and The Getaway Car are known quantities, Baking in the Dark (Ultras Sortes Kageshow – Big Cake Show) is a Danish show where pairs try and bake a cake in the dark. Here’s an episode of it here.

This year apparently the people who make the shows will get a say in who wins which may skew the results slightly differently. Previous winners suggest that the judges look for originality and a strong idea before commercial considerations. With this in mind, I’m going to predict the winner.

I rate The Getaway Car‘s chances at around 5% and my main reason for this is that Wild Things won last year with a show that’s similarly physical and similarly has the backseat driver element, but Wild Things is much funnier and more creative, I can’t see it going to a similar sort of thing twice in a row.

Baking In The Dark is the slightly unknown quantity, I put its chances at 35%. It’s a funny idea but really it’s quite derivative – any cooking show combined with Total Blackout. It would be the first time a non-English show has won the category since 2010.

So by process of elimination I give Pick Me! a 60% chance of winning. It was an original idea, It was fairly funny, being a flop non-commercial success domestically doesn’t seem to put the judges off.

I’d be thrilled for Possessed if they won it but I can’t say I’d be pulling for it enthusiastically, it seems somewhat unbelievable that of all the shows that put themselves forward these were the top three, but the correct show out of the nominations tends to win in this category, unlike other awards in the past I don’t care to name.

We’re doing Game Night 3 on Saturday

By | July 13, 2016

tpointiosSaturday 16th July, 10:30pm – midnight(ish) UK

On Youtube and RIGHT HERE on Bother’s Bar.

Well it went so well the last time I’m doing Game Night once again, and this time it will be FULLY INTERACTIVE. Yep, you’ll be able to play along with every game on your phone, competing, judging answers and helping to decide the winners all thanks to the Jackbox Party Packs.

This time round we have Drawful 2 to add to the mix. One of the “things” for Drawful 2 is that we can do our own prompts for people to draw, so here is some prep work – what weird and wonderful things would you like the panel to draw? We’re on late so you can be rude (although try not to be too crude), they don’t have to be gameshow related, the more conceptual and odd the better. Send in as many as you like and I’ll add them to the list. Lines close for this on Friday night.

Warning

Warning.

I will also be looking for people to fill the panel to play and provide reaction. If that sounds like you then hit me up on here or on Twitter. You will need a reasonable connection and the ability to use Google Hangouts (and invariably the link to join will be given out via direct message on Twitter). I’ve only got room for a certain amount and I’m looking for a range of people. If that doesn’t sound like you but want to get involved you can playalong on your phones as part of the audience on the night.

Please don’t be offended if I turn you down, I’m looking for a mix of old hands and new people, and if we’re well oversubscribed I will try and run this more regularly.

And if you want to see the sort of thing we get up to, here’s the first one and here’s the second one.

Family needed for quiz run-through on Wednesday

By | July 11, 2016

[A quick reminder that we have a Show Discussion post up for The Question Jury starting at 4pm today so please direct discussion of it there.]

We’ve had an e-mail from Clare at ITV Studios who are looking for volunteers to take part in a non-broadcast runthrough this Wednesday (13th) after a last minute drop-out.

It is a smart quiz being developed by ex-University Challenge people, but it’s for families.

We’re therefore looking for a team of four family members to take part. It doesn’t matter how the four people are related, but two of them must be aged 11 to 18.

We can cover travel expenses for people who aren’t London-based.

If that sounds like you (kids might be quite difficult as the Summer hols haven’t started yet, although your kids may have just finished their exams). Then drop clare.parody@itv.com a line. Quickly!

Show Discussion: The Question Jury

By | July 10, 2016

questionjuryWeekdays, 4pm,
Channel 4

Quizzy Mondays get temporarily quizzier this week with the launch of The Question Jury on Channel 4 afternoons, in the fabled Benchmark slot no less. Or one of them anyway.

Seven people in a jury room work as a team and face questions to win a cash prize of up to £10,000. At the end of the show they must select a Final Foreman who will play for all the money for themselves and win or lose will leave the show to be replaced by a new person the next day, with entirely new groups starting on Mondays.

An interview with the producers (one of whom is Wiiiiill Macdonald) suggests each person gets to be the Foreman once a show rotating, which suggests seven questions before the final, which suggests slow. They’re banking on the reality aspect to keep it compelling. Four weeks worth of shows have been filmed.

Does it work? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Schlag den Star 9/7/16 #bbsds

And so we come to the third part of our three part Schlag den Star experiment and bosses will be watching the numbers for this one with interest to determine whether it’s worth continuing with or not.

On Saturday night two celebs will battle it out over fifteen games LIVE for €100,000, the people’s favourite Elton will once again be hosting but commentary will be provided by Ron Ringguth as Frank Buschmann is too busy commentating on Ninja Warrior. There are usually musical guests to break up the action but we don’t know who they are at time of writing.

But if you don’t fancy their commentary than come and listen to ours instead. We’ll have quizzes (probably) and gossip (possibly) while the adverts are on.

Who are the two gladiators competing this month? NONE OTHER THAN “Freeway action hero” Tom Beck (it says here) and host of Taffen Daniel Aminati. Both have been stars on Schlag den Star before, both of them have won.

Here is our commentary stream.
This stream is commentary only. You will need to have a naughty stream running at the same time for the visuals. We are likely to be about 15-20 seconds behind the visual stream (and about a full minute behind if you’re watching an actual satellite feed), sorry.

This is the stream we will be watching. (It’s in HD!)

I would also like to draw your attention to Game Night 3 happening next weekend from 10:30pm, we need your ideas for things to draw.
