Upcoming entertainments

By | March 31, 2020

I’m hoping to record another Bother’s Bar Plays Badly on Thursday night around 9-ish, this time on the Tenable app and I’m looking for five people to make a team. You will need Discord and a microphone. If you want to get involved then please get in touch – I already have takers, I also have spaces.

Thanks to Setsunael for alerting us to this, is this Stefan Raab on The Masked Singer? And if it is will Elton or Matthias Opdenhovel recognise him?

They’ve uploaded the first Schlag den Raab to Youtube and it takes 45 minutes to get going.

Just a reminder that TMS Germany has been postponed for 2 weeks due to 2 crew members being tested positive for Covid-19. As an alternative, they’ll re-broadcast the season 1 premiere tonight.

And no, the sloth isn’t Raab. Just check out his performance of Volare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zs8snjQ7NyU

A little more about the Raab FreeESC show. And a rather curious sounding ESC replacement.

Raab pitched an alternative-format idea for Eurovision to the ARD Entertainment Co-Ordinator Thomas Schreiber, who submitted it to the other members of the EBU. There wasn’t a majority in support of the format, so the decision was to go with an idea created by the Dutch national broadcaster NPO. The Eurovision replacement show (from the EBU) which is called ‘Europe Shine a Light’ will be broadcast on May 16th (original ESC date and in direct competition with Raab).

There’s an interview on a German media website called DWDL in which Schreiber has some sharp words for the EBU about how they’ve dealt with the whole cancellation situation. Schreiber also suggests he’s not 100% happy with the Dutch format, but will fully support the programme.

‘Europe Shine a Light’ will only feature clips of the songs that were due to be performed at this year’s Eurovision. For legal reasons (a risk of invalidating insurance), there won’t be any voting. The exact length of the show & format are not known, but will start at 9pm CET (8pm BST).

The ‘Free Eurovision Song Contest’ that Raab pitched to NDR was to feature 41 acts from across Europe. The performances would be done live – either in TV studios or somewhere else – with a presenters linking the show together from a remote studio. Prosieben haven’t said whether this is the format that will be broadcast or if there have been changes.

It’s all going down on WikiQuiz at the moment. (Is this a Will Jones project? Don’t think I can see any credits…) As well as David J. Bodycombe setting some excellent, but now past-tense, quizzes on Toys and Games, Punctuation and Colours, you can see a list of quizzes past and present. One of the quizzes available is on “UK television quiz shows”, which someone here (quite possibly someones plural) will smash, or may well have already smashed, and which I have lightly chipped. Deadline is 5pm on Wednesday.

    Question 28 is right on.

I think it was set by the same John Robinson that won £500k on Millionaire, I noticed Eleanor Ayres who won £125k on the leaderboard for the Toys and Games one.

39 here, but do take a look at my answer to question 11 in the fullness of time for an amusing doozy of a gaffe. Kicking myself for at least one that I talked myself out of.

39 and 40 both feel very beatable to me…

I got 38, because there were a few where I could picture the face but not the name, and a few total guesses. So annoyed that I couldn’t remember the name of the expert on Grand Slam, I’m sure it was mentioned on here just a few days ago.

One Andrew Sullivan of this parish turns out to be the smasher with a mighty 48/50, which I think is worth considerable bragging rights. Congratulations to him, and to everyone else pleased with their performance! I’m still annoyed about talking myself out of guessing “Was it you?” for number fifty…

Pretty happy to be in such an illustrious grouping, the formatty questions very happy with, the history of contestants and specialised subjects I’m not so big on.

*YOU’RE* embarrassed? I worked on the show and still managed to get that wrong. (I’d forgotten that Pat Gibson was given an automatic path to the final.)

Is this a licensed version of the German show (which is actually pretty decent) or their own “let’s do Gladiators again” version?

Despite myself, I actually think that looks potentially cool. But I’m sure it’ll have all the usual frustrations with American game shows.

Also I wish they’d just bring back American Gladiators, but actually do it well.

… also it pains me deeply that I can’t find anywhere to watch more than a few stray episodes of the original American Gladiators online.

Try the Pluto TV app if you can get it…they have old eps there.

I tuned in and it was my all time favourite competitor, Clifton Miller. It is precisely him that I had in mind when I was hoping to see old episodes.

I’d post this in the WIDM page but I still haven’t watched the finale for some reason and don’t want to be spoiled, but season 14 just got uploaded with subtitles.

The latest Fingers on Buzzers has an interview with Richard Osman and it’s very good indeed, as good (and as formatty) as you might hope for. Richard claims that he devised Survivor when working for Planet 24 (plausible, or at least the timeline checks out) and also talks quite fondly about Shafted, of all the things. Stating the bloody obvious, Richard would be One Of Us, had he the time and inclination.

In other news, congratulations to Matt Clemson for hammering a quiz on WikiQuiz about old video games with 28/30. Brig came an extremely creditable second, again.

Thanks, sometimes one just falls perfectly your way. I didn’t do as well on Emma Laslett’s VG-by-the-numbers quiz, though. I’ve had one quiz I’ve had bouncing around the back of my mind for a while which I was possibly going to create for a Watchalong, but it might fit here too.

In doing these I have noticed (and used the contact form to notify the management of) a couple of bugs that you might want to be aware of: You can’t use greater than or less than (presumably for HTML-ey reasons), and answers longer than 110 characters get lost (which I noticed on the recent – and excellent – Connections quiz, since the “and why” answers have to be somewhat descriptive). The Save-and-F5 trick shows these up (although I missed one in my submitted answers when I did), but be warned.

Have the results for Emma Laslett’s quiz come up yet? I scored 18 on automarking and didn’t think a great score out of 40, but it sounds like most people were getting single figs.

No, not yet, so I don’t know how I’ve done in the grand scheme of things, but it’s reassuring to hear that other people found that one particularly hard!
