Bother’s Bar Plays Badly: Escape Game Fort Boyard 2022

By | June 25, 2022

That’s right. The new series starts on France 2 next Saturday night but that’s not stopped Microids releasing this year’s iteration into stores – right now it’s out on Nintendo Switch and Playstation, Steam and XBox to come. Is it worth £36 of your hard earned cash? Of course not, but allow us to show you what’s new in this edition and also the stuff that was added in the Toujours Plus Fort! DLC last year that we didn’t bother making a video for.

This year’s big new innovation is the Time Machine featuring six (count ’em) old school games, two of which are games that have been on previous editions but deskinned. And for some reason these aren’t integrated into the main adventure, which they managed to do on telly when they got Patrice Laffont back for a year to introduce them so no excuse really. Also features Willy Rovelli, and for some reason all the new games have extraordinary tight time limits.

I’d say “it’s getting closer to being worth your money if you don’t have it, isn’t it?”, just through variety, but can’t help feeling that the best quarter of the minigames here would barely compete with those in, pretty much, any of the Mario Party series.

I mean, sure – you’re getting three times as many games for your money in the 2022 edition compared to the original one – but of those about half of them are mini-mini-games really – nobody really gets hugely excited for the Cage, Judgement or Council elements, and of the big games only about half feel like worthwhile implementations. And even at 44 you’re still only half a modern Mario Party collection.

One thing the video doesn’t mention, as it actually didn’t come up – every game that can be played with the Switch controller as a gyroscope gets the Joycon “don’t forget to wear the strap” safety warning which felt rather egregious. Especially as I was playing with the Pro Controller.

Fun spot by Lee in the Discord: The game claims 44 events, but there are only 35 in the main adventure and 6 in the Time Machine, which makes them three short.

Well at least at this time is the most complete fort boyard experience you can get in modern video games. However, should they just DLC each year rather than bring a full fresh version out. Maybe they go down a different route for 23 but then again we are talking Microids

So could somebody please explain the formats for each game length? I don’t have the patience to sit though 20-30minuite walkthroughs of a mediocre party game.
