Eurovision 2012 Semi 1

By | May 22, 2012

8pm, BBC3
Official ESC live stream

This year I’m going into this totally blind. The UK cannot vote in this semi final – we get to vote in the on on Thursday.

This is the one with JEDWARD! and the Russian grannies.

Feel free to leave comments and opinions on the songs and staging. The commentators for the UK are Scott Mills and Sara Cox.

I’m also likely to be commenting on Twitter.

Ahahaha, the final golden ticket is a physical envelope!

    And it’s got…

    IRELAND!

Gah! It should have been Finland, not Ireland! Curse you, Europe! Have you no taste?
I’m going to rant about this for the rest of the week. I apologize in advance.
At least Moldova and Iceland got through. If either of those win I’ll be more than happy.

I fully expect to be buying a new TV for the second year in a row.

If I’m being honest, neither upsets nor surprises in the list of qualifiers. I might have preferred Israel to sending both Greece *and* Cyprus through, I might have put Finland rather than Albania through. But overall, a good job by Europe.

Have we heard the winner? Iceland are obviously going far, 7th in the final is a reasonable draw, and it’ll be a complete change from the Prancing Grannies immediately prior. I had Hungary down as dark horses, but they’re drawn second, and will be completely overshadowed by EngHum. As much as other Bar patrons hate them, Ireland have that professionalism and cheekiness and what is actually a good song, memorably performed. Position 23 on Saturday is a Very Good Draw: late, but not last.

Ireland have a winning formula – distinctive performers with name recognition, a thoroughly enjoyable song, and drawn four from the end. Top ten, certainly.

Agree that Hungary has been given a wretched draw; not so sure it’ll be overshadowed by The Hump. If anything, I’d say the opposite.

As much as I want Enge to do well and even with his middle aged blue rinse central European fanbase, first cab of the rank is too much to ask (even if the second phoneline recap during the 15 min vote window will have him last)
The Russian grannies will pick up a steady number of votes but their performances was hampered by some incompetent sound mixing which if done the same on Saturday evening will trash all chances of the outright win.
San Marino ‘could’ be dark horses if a pan-europe Facebook campagin gains some serious legs in the next couple of days.
Then there’s Jedward. If they cut out the exuberant theatrics in the performance a bit and concentrated on the song rather than being all excited about being on stage at Eurovision it could worry RTE’s accountants as they would be serious contenders for le grand priz de Eurovision. Currently the leaping around and mugging up through the sing will put some voters off. Probably like Russia, will be a consistent 6 or 8 points receivers though.
Still annoyed that the Latvian milfs didn’t get through. If those ludicrously false eyelashes and make up applied with a trowl wasn’t prime material for Graham Norton then I don’t know what was…

I’m not sure I fancy San Marino’s chance in the final, because it didn’t qualify sadly.

Right. I’m sure they had! Thanks recalibrating my eurovision sat-nab.

Sorry for the spelling in my last post. I’m not drunk – I’m using one of Mr Job’s 3G telecommunication devices which has developed a rather glitchy touchscreen…
