Dead Set:

Bleak.

Oh my God it's Trey Farley

And he's only hosting a new show on the US Sci-Fi Channel called Cha$e (pronounced "Cha-dollar symbol-e") based on a Japanese show which you can look at here and then here. There is quite a funny bit in the second clip about five minutes in when a guy suddenly realises there's a Hunter running down on him. Anyway, it looks like lots of people have to evade capture in a place for a bit whilst suited Hunters try and find them, the number of Hunters preying the streets seems to depend on how everyone does in missions. If you last the full hour you win, it looks like someone who was once captured gets a chance for redemption by finding a ringing phone box.

Goodness knows how that's going to translate on US screens, frankly. Perhaps we could relaunch Wanted off the back of it. Anyway, it starts November 11th, hopefully it will turn up in the usual places.

Exciting Contestant Call

  • Celador Productions are looking for five individuals to take part in a run-through of a brand new quiz format. This is a rehearsal run in front of a commissioner from a major channel, but won’t be recorded or transmitted.

The run-through will be in the week of 10th-14th November (exact date and time TBC), and will be held in Central London (EC1). We’ll pay for reasonable travel expenses, lunch, and a small fee just for turning up. What’s more, the winning “contestant” will walk away with an “amazing” three-figure prize!

We’re looking for people of any age (18+) or background, with decent general knowledge. If you’re interested, or know someone who might be, then please contact Maya Thirkell on MThirkell@celadorproductions.com – or call 0207 153 0611.

We'd go for this but actually we can't. So if you want to, there are your details. Good luck!

The Clipton Factor - Scary Sleepover

Now we did have something else planned this week, but then we remembered that it's Halloween this week. And what's the unwritten rule of the Internet? That whenever it's Halloween week, you're obliged to do some sort of Halloween special. So what better show to do than the awesome and slightly morrally suspect Scary Sleepover from 2003? The show where kids were dared to spend a night in a "haunted" house, whilst the Granada special effects team did whatever they could to get them to press the panic button and escape.

You have no idea how many e-mails we got asking how you got to be a contestant on this show. And yet it only got one series.

Haloscan's being a bit "funny", so don't be surprised if messages keep popping in and out of the comment boxes.

We forgot it's Halloween this week. We haven't got a spooky Clipton Factor clip lined up this evening. Perhaps we will swap it out at the last minute. YOU WANTED EXCITEMENT?

27th October 2008

And don't forget...

Charlie Brooker's Dead Set is on this evening - 10pm on E4. We thought it was only going to be half an hour as it's stripped across the week, but it turns out it's on for 70 minutes. Interesting!

EDIT: Apparently it's 30 minutes for the rest of the week. So there we are.

In other exciting news, it looks like they're after 28 contestants for The Krypton Factor. 6x4 plus four stand-bys? That sounds like two groups of twelve, three winners plus highest scoring runner-up to the group finals, top two from each one through to the final. But don't quote us on that, unless it turns out to be correct. We're gathering the assault course is going to be tougher than it used to be also.

26th October 2008

Blimey, five days between updates. I hope this week is a bit more exciting.

I'll tell you what IS exciting... it's this week's Fantasy X Factor results. Thanks.

21st October 2008

This is a message on behalf of Unbeatable Banzuke for Bother's Bar's six or maybe seven readers.

"Please convince people to watch unbeatable banzuke as it's not doing great in the ratings and it makes me cry on the inside.

Thanks.
Tom "

We're living in a harsh, violent world. War. The economy. More war. More the economy. When you woke up this morning, did you think to yourself "today I will not watch Unbeatable Banzuke and make Tom cry"? You might not have been thinking that, but actually you were. Every day.

And yet for just an hour a day you can stop this cruelty, cruelty to Tom. An hour that buys you:

  • Britain's greatest living Englishman (behind Fred Dinenage) Brian Blessed in a red Power Ranger outfit using his voice.
  • Some people doing an outrageous obstacle course on their hands.
  • Some people doing an outrageous obstacle course on a unicycle.
  • Some people doing an outrageous obstacle course on bamboo poles.
  • Some people doing press ups.

Just sixty minutes a day buys Tom happiness. Watch Unbeatable Banzuke every day at 6pm on Challenge. Watch it... for Tom.

In other news, we know Paul from today's Eggheads. Truly, THE show to be seen on these days.

The Clipton Factor - Tell the Truth

Sorry we're late, we've had a headache all day but have MANFULLY struggled on to bring you this week's clip, which comes from the early to mid- eighties. It's Tell the Truth with Graeme Garden, and a pretty stellar line-up of guests.

It was very interesting coming across this, because our first recollection of the format was the Fred Dinenage (surely it should be Sir Fred Dinenage by now? Ah, those Fred 'n' Fern Coast to Coast days come flooding back...) TVS version in the late eighties.

19th October 2008

The Clipton Factor Bonus Edition - Bang Bang Bang!

Basically, we felt we had to share. We've had to cut this to shreds to fit the most interesting bits in, we're sure you'll understand.

Alright, three teams are taking part. In game one teams must buzz in when they think they can work out which puzzle piece doesn't actually match the video being shown. And other games involve working out what a picture of something is with only certain colours showing, and Mastermind (the one with the coloured pegs rather than the black chair quiz).

And if you enjoyed it, wait until you see Part 2...

Week two of Fantasy X Factor is done and dusted, the results can be found here.

We've decided we're going to put a clip of Bang Bang Bang! up later as a sort of too-good-not-to-share bonus, so here's a new comment box.

18th October 2008

Clip Boyard

This week we're back in 1998 with "secousse" - a new take on the typical don't touch the wire game, with Jaba the Pirate putting the contestants off. This was actually played just the once in the UK show.

16th October 2008

Dear Five, please give John Suchet less time to fill before closing the competition lines, it's just mean on him and viewers. Love, Brig xx

P.S. "carryover champion" sounds like a hideous Americanism, like the word "winningest". Just say 'returning'.

Anyway, we've discovered how to do mailing lists a bit better so we're abandoning the Bother's Bar Happy Hour YahooGroup. When Fantasy X Factor finishes, you'll be given the opportunity to sign up directly for exciting Bother's Bar competition marketing, or something.

The Clipton Factor - What's My Line?

Alright then evrybody, the next, ooh, loads of clips should be quite interesting as we've inherited UK Game Show Page founder Chris M Dickson's old tape collection (we hope the move has gone well, Chris!). The Dickson Collection isn't a diamond collection, but there are plenty of gems to be found (No really Brig, why aren't you in the industry? - Everyone in the World).

Anyway today we're bringing you some classic What's My Line action - it's from the 1988 series hosted by Penelope Keith. Included are the titles, guests, the mystery guest round and the final game. I wonder if Jeffrey Archer would get that sort of reaction now, twenty years on?

In other news, we applied for audience tickets for The Colour of Money but due to OVERWHELMING DEMAND we've been turned down. It's a hit already!!!

13th October 2008

Going for Gold, then.

  • The original theme tune is a majestic piece of musical art. The MIDI-esque cover of it used here is not.
  • International episodes to come!
  • John Suchet wasn't perfect, he was stumbling a bit in places when he needed to fill (and during Four-in-a-Row he seemed a bit unsure whether to give the right answer or not) but at least he's clear and fast when it comes to reading out the questions. I do get the feeling he will grow into the role.
  • The set and graphics lack impact. Which is ironic really, seeing as Impact is the only font used. (Very well done, Brig - Everyone in the World) Actually, one of the worst things about the graphics is that it's quite hard to see using the colour of coins what's actually being represented. They should have used various sized gold bars for the head to head I reckon.
  • Beat the Buzzer is first to nine rather than six. Fair enough. What's less fair enough is interrupting the quiz to advertise not only the phone in competition but also to go to an ad break. Irritating.
  • The head to head is timed rather than first to nine. Not a fan really, it takes away some of the rather important strategy involved, and it rather lessens the impact of getting a question right in the Big Four Zone. Besides which, it goes on a bit.
  • But we approve that the head to head phone in game during Extra is basically an untimed version of the same game and not some sort of luck based gimme. The only problem is, I think, a proven studio player who has already won the main quiz is always more likely to win over a self-selected member of the public.
  • The questions are decent, it's still a decent quiz.
  • The show loses something without the energy of a proper audience there - canned won't do. It all feels a bit cheap.
  • Actually apparently Compacta is used on the background coin. So there we are.

So bearing that all in mind, let's take a quick look at the show it's sort of trying to ape, the original Going for Gold Questions Pour Un Champion.

It's the same show, hosted since 1988 by the legendary Julien Lepers. A few things work differently:

  • We were always slightly confused by the scoring for the nine points round, but by observation and looking on Wikipedia we think the questions cycle round one, two or three points returning to one point if nobody gets an answer right. And apparently two and three and finally three as the contestant numbers dwindle.
  • The head to head is first to 12 rather than nine.
  • Winning is worth €1,000 a day but they can risk it all to come back and win the jackpot which starts at €10,000 and increases €300 each day it isn't won. It's won by winning five times. I expect Tom H or Ryan to come along and correct that in a minute. They should do something like that on the Channel 5 version.

We hilariously missed Peter Kay's Britain's Got The Pop Factor (We Can't Be Bothered To Fill In The Rest of the Title) last night so someone remind us to watch it on 4oD.

In other news, it's Going For Gold today on Five! Now the main show probably won't be too problematic - the format is proven after all. The question is how is Going for Gold Extra going to work? The idea is that the home phone in player goes up against the daily winner to win a £1,000. Now, if it's a straight quiz you'd expect the proven studio player to have a decent advantage over a random member of the public.

They wouldn't dare bring down a hard quiz with "pick squares off a grid and try and find the gold (as in literally Going for Gold)..." would they?

12th October 2008

X Factor managers! Bad Lashes have gone, Girlband takes a hit and so does Louis Walsh. It's the ONLY chart that counts!

11th October 2008

Clip Boyard

This week it's our favourite of the overnight magic crystal retrieving games, again from 2005. The crystal is locked up and the team need the code to get it out. Unfortunately the code is hidden in bits in various places in the flooded rooms. They're against the clock - the first two minutes are free but after that a lurking Master flips a sandtimer over - every time the sand passes through the glass, the team lose a Duel, meaning one less opportunity to release prisoners and erarn treasure room time.

Last call, all entries for the first week of Fantasy X Factor must be in for 7:15 this evening or you miss the boat.

9th October 2008

Well we can't think of anything exciting happening right now (although we've not gone a bundle on Five's Going for Gold logo, and we're mildly amused that Tokyo Broadcasting System want to sue ABC for broadcasting Wipeout).

So I'll remind you that there's £80 of actual real cash to be won playing Fantasy X Factor, and that for your best chance of winning you need to get in for the first live show on Saturday.

The Clipton Factor - Battle of the Network Stars

We've got a double bill for you this week because we think this is pretty interesting. It's the first ever Battle of the Network Stars from 1976, a twice yearly event on ABC where celebrities from ABC, NBC and CBS battle it out in a series of events for $20,000 each. It's hosted by Monday Night Football legend Howard Cossell. Here is the rather amusing opening...

And here is the Running relay which I'm afraid I had to edit quite heavily to fit into the ten minute Youtube limit - basically, if you thought it was only modern celebrities who acted badly, you should see them thirty years ago...

Also features Gabe Kaplan, off of poker.

Unbeatable Banzuke

  • Because each event is basically based around one discipline, it's not quite as entertaining to watch as the spin-off shows.
  • Brian Blessed is not the best commentator, but he is very good at being Brian Blessed and perhaps that's enough. We largely suspect dressing as the red Power Ranger and refering to himself as Banzuke Brian came at little or no extra cost.

6th October 2008

Don't forget!

It's Unbeatable Banzuke on Challenge this evening, a double bill from 6pm. It's the UK repackage with Brian Blessed of the US repackage of the Japanese Muscle Ranking (which Five did years ago sanitized as Under Pressure.)

And it's the Uni Challenge/Only Connect middle class double bill from 8pm. Awesome.

5th October 2008

Right, if you scroll down to the bottom left of the sidebar we've added a place for everyone to leave their gaming details.

At 8pm, come back and you can start entering teams for Fantasy X Factor...

Edit: Fantasy X Factor is GO GO GO!

4th October 2008

Clip Boyard

Seeing as it's not going to be on Friday anymore. Anyway, we must apologise in advance, October looks like being a very busy month for TV's Brig Bother, so please don't be too upset if there isn't as much new "content" as you'd like. You'll still get your twice weekly clips, though.

Anyway we're sticking with 2005 this week for "Louches". This game is notable for being almost exactly the same as a game on The Crystal Maze over ten years previous.

Played six times, but only won once.

Don't forget! Fantasy X Factor begins tomorrow evening at 8pm, soon after the final twelve are announced.

2nd October 2008

We've not had some anon(n)ymous comments for a while. Let us rectify that now:

  • The trailer for Brian Blessed's Unbeatable Banzooki on Challenge is precisely 7 kinds of excellent. Hazaaaa! (In fairness, there is literally nothing that doesn't immediately become awesome with Brian Blessed's involvement)
  • You said that  Russian of fort boyard kept the prisions from 2003 in 2004. but this link shows them using it. (That is very true, good find. But we stand by our clip, perhaps they used both?)
  • The female co-presenter has been cast for Total Wipeout, as I learned in the audition for the show today. They wouldn't say who it is, but that there was an 'm' somewhere in their name. (It's Michaela Strachan.)

Don't forget Fantasy X Factor kicks off on Saturday night! Exciting.

Going for Gold

We wouldn't, as The Pet Shop Boys would have it, normally do this kind of thing. But really given that Five can't get away with not using the amazing Hans Zimmer theme, it's only right and (first round) proper that the full thing is given a wider airing. So to the two people who read Bother's Bar and hasn't seen this already, some guy on YouTube did this...

1st October 2008

Nevermore

Raven series eight. It's all gone a bit Knightmare series six, hasn't it?

  • We have new slightly edgier editing and direction. We're straight into Warrior's Race without so much as a by your leave.
  • Raven seems a bit more... terse than usual. Less mentor, more examiner.
  • We now get interview pieces before most games as well as after. Joy. And nicked from The Secret Temple, we're subjected to an end of episode grilling.
  • Now here's the oddest bit - all the scores are kept as computer graphics shown after each game with a Raven voiceover. This doesn't sound like an awful lot, but it is part of a much larger thing, that thing being there's no real sense of going on a journey any more - game, scores, game, scores and that's it, no real interaction between Raven and Warriors (he doesn't use his staff to take away lives and give out rings. In fact you don't see actual standards at all except at the beginning and end of the episode), no random shots of travelling through the woods (each game is introduced with a very short computer graphic representation on a rather unconvincing version of the map). The pace and added graphic abstractions make it feel less like an adventure and more like Medieval Mario Party: The TV Game.
  • There wasn't much in the way of visual trickery going on at all.

We await the rest of the week with interest. There were some quite odd shots as well, so we wonder how it all looks on BBC HD (7pm most nights). Quite good you'd imagine, so why remove most of the woodland shots?
