September 2006

30th September 2006

New feature up, on what David Young and Paul Ross thought the future of gameshows would be like back in 1999.

Now, who will replace Des Lynam on Countdown, eh?

The 1 vs 100 webgame is quite good fun, although we were getting repeat questions after the third go. The show begins this evening.

27th September 2006

Tuesday night is Reviews Day night

This is what they want!

Although it's a pity the question cards don't fit in the question card holder properly, and that there aren't really enough of them. Still, though. Review Tuesday.

An open letter to Drumond Park

Dear Drumond Park,

Using my exciting Mintel powers of Christmas market prediction, I largely suspect that your Deal or No Deal board game (and various variations of) could well become this year's best selling game.

Except you seem to be perfectly happy to screw yourselves over, as the only places I've found selling it in the shops are a) Debenhams and b) Argos. Except not even proper Argos, but Argos Extra.

Your distributors. SORT THEM OUT.

Love!
Brig xx

In other news whilst wandering around the shops today, I've noticed that the deluxe version of Countdown is out (featuring proper clock AND! lights), and deluxe versions of Family Fortunes (with Vernon Kaye's mug on the cover. When is that starting, eh?) which is deluxe because the uh-uh sound thing now has some lights, apparently, and Play Your Cards Right which importantly features big cards.

Goodness, just having a look, there's a Countdown DVD game out next Monday.

Like last year, we hope to roadtest as many gameshow tie-ins as possible for the Christmas market, as far as our budget allows. This makes me a pig to buy for at Christmas, but I'm happy to let my friends and family suffer for your entertainment.

Fun for you at home

The feature on Le Bigdil is now finally up! Maybe we'll do Cultura Moderna next week. Or maybe something else. Or maybe nothing at all.

Anyway, we've watched the first episode of season two for the Swedish version of Deal or No Deal.

The theme tune goes like this, although looking at these title shots, I think it's a shame it doesn't instead go like this. That's a reference for the over thirties amongst you. Which probably isn't many.

Nice set though, somewhere in between the US and Dutch sets. Equally nice graphics:

What the picture doesn't show is the sillhouetted woman pushing the question on.

The studio audience quiz.

There's many of things to like about the Swedish show. Its take on the US staircase set looks interesting. It's got a commendably stingy banker, and that's "good" stingy rather than "Dutch" stingy. We quite like the theme tune.

We know what we're doing tomorrow.

The Deal or No Deal boardgame is out! IF we find it, we'll get a review done for you.

But what we're about to do NOW is write up a feature on Le Bigdil. Come back soon!

20th September 2006

It's the new Happy Hour competition!

Are you French?

Basically, we really, really want a copy of the La Carte Aux Tresors soundtrack that was released about a decade ago. If you can help, we're sure we can make it worth your while, so to speak.

La Carte Aux Tresors is currently showing in Fort Boyard's old slot on TV5 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you want an idea of what's going on, we did a feature on it, although they changed the rules the next year so it's not completely accurate. The episode shown this week is from, we think, 2003, it's likely they'll be mixing with some from 2004 as it is a 15 week run.

In other news, we've got a new competition coming up soon.

18th September 2006

Ooh they've garaged it up.

God, I wish producers would stop thinking the charmless US version of Deal or No Deal is the way to go.

Anyway, here are the new French titles.

We miss the Bontempi keyboard.

Edit: Here you go, the Bother's Bar Memorial mp3. Actually, we don't think the new theme is too bad, but you know?

17th September 2006

Also well done Ant 'n' Dec people, Saturday Night Takeaway was largely great, although you could do with making the holes in the Jiggy Bank a bit bigger, obviously.

Things About The X Factor We're Bored Of Now

Now, unlike trendy left-wing opinion funsters, we at Bothers Bar quite enjoy the cold pantomime of The X Factor. We don't watch it religiously, but if it's on and we're in, and so on.

But we're growing slightly tired of something now, and it relates to the auditions.

[Piano starts up in the background, or Westlife, or something]
Auditionee: [to Kate Thornton] Yeah, I'm a bit useless at life and want to make up for it now, or I look after my Mum, or something.
Thornton: OK good luck!
[Rousing music fades, int. Audition Room]
Auditionee: Hello! I'm going to sing slightly above averagely for you. Listen! [sings] By the way, I've been a bit useless at life and want to make up for it now or I look after my Mum, or something.
Cowell: Hmm, well, no. Or yes.
Osbourne: Yes of course!
[At this point the music recommences at that bit in every Westlife song to just before that bit where there is a key change]. Louis?
Walsh: ...yes! [key change, auditionee runs out of room]
Auditionee: YEESSSSS!

It has got to the point when we know someone who has a story (and please imagine a huge sneer on the word "story") is going to go through, so we just throw things at the television instead.

In other news: Survivor: Cook Islands: meh.

14th September 2006

Like bacteria on the face of television, as one reality show finishes, TWO pop up in its place.

This time it's good bacteria though, because in this case it's Survivor: Cook Islands which fingers crossed will be avaliable for illegal download tomorrow, and then on Sunday it's Please-Let-It-Be-Good-Amazing Race.

I wish I knew how to use Paint Shop Pro properly :(

I bet Banksy wishes he was as good as me.

Clicky.

9th September 2006

For you, the reader, we've gone and done another feature for you, will Alta Tensione be the next big thing, or will it be in fact highly derivative, uninteresting and lacking in pace? Only you, the reader, can decide.

8th September 2006

I'd just like to draw your attention to the comments box for the 6th September, Tom H has provided a report from a recording of Challenge's Take It Or Leave It.

7th September 2006

As it turns out...

De Slimste started on Talpa TV a few days ago. It's on nightly at 9:30 BST.

I've just discivered that Dutch celebrities aren't very good with Formula 1 drivers.

6th September 2006

I love it when a plan comes together!

Hmm. How do we cover last night's events in the Big Brother house without spoiling it for many of you non-Americans who, like me, may be downloading it and not watching it?

Are there any of you actually?

Oh it's probably a minor amount. If you don't want to know what happened yesterday then skip on down the page until you hear Tom Winnifrith suggesting that you can do better than a cat.

Anyway! USBB7AS (as referred to by its friends) reaches its gripping conclusion next week, and that means that it's time for the final Head of Household competition. Now, this is the win you NEED to win, because you're guaranteed a final spot AND you get to choose who sits next to you to face the jury. The final HOH competition is played in three parts - the first part is always an endurance competition which began last night. The winner advances through to the HOH Final, whilst the other two battle it out in in a second competition. The two heat winners face of in the final to decide who becomes the final HOH.

These final competitions are often spectacular in scope, and the first heat, as mentioned, is always a hard fought endurance competition. And this year, it was based on Mount HOH. The players take one side of the mountain and climb up it facing outwards. when comfortable, they grip onto a key embedded at the top of the mountain. The last one to keep both hands on their key is the winner.

It's going to be a long night! Everybody wants the 50/50 shot at the $500,000 grand prize. And look at that mountain! Several millions of dollars must have gone into that prop. Smoke billows out of it and everything!

And obviously, being a volcano, it's going to erupt and make our contestants lives a misery! This is going to be a hard fought contest, and one to look forward to seeing unfold in the next highlight show.

Or at least, this would be the case if it hadn't finished less than five minutes after it had begun. Of our three contestants, one jumped off almost immediately, doing a "Richard Hatch", telling the other contestants that they cannot win against each other and that they'll have to take him through to the final two.

Returning from the ad break, host Julie Chen (reading off her cards, this was obviously not expected) announces that another contestant has taken one hand off their key and they're eliminated. So the game is over before the payoff (erupting) can kick in, thus making the whole thing a complete waste of money. This, obviously, is hilarious, and precisely the reason we like live television.

Earlier on, the greatest player the game has ever had got evicted. We're so glad he lasted this far though - his manipulation and Diary Room conversations have single-handedly made this "season" worth watching. The charming bastard. Although seeing as he's already won a season anyway, we can't believe that he'd whoever is in the jury would give him another $500,000 over anyone else.

Hey! We got through this whole story without mentioning any names at all. Well done us.

What do you think about cats, Tom?

5th September 2006

We thought you'd like a new comment box.

Nice weather, isn't it?

2nd September 2006

Our exciting new run of features begins with German show Extreme Activity.

Next week, Celador's High Tension get's the World O' Game treatment. Enjoy.

1st September 2006

Round up

  • It was the final of Raven: The Island today. It's certainly been quite a, er, different series, I'd be fascinated to know what an 8-10 year old would have made of it. It's been quite diffuclt to watch, because of NTL's on demand system only showing Monday's episode throughout the weeks, but we were at home this afternoon for its tense nailbiting finale, cough. It's biggest problem, we think, is in the pacing - three tasks in half an hour is too few for my liking. And the way they've been going on about gameshowy things throughout the run (giving us exact numbers of timepieces and whatnot) but for them not to really matter in the end (will they get back through the portal in time? Answer: yes.) grates. Why can't the Raven team ever manage to come up with an excellent and spectacular endgame which rounds the week off nicely? Nice idea, nice presentation, let down by execution. Let's hope Proper Raven 5 is better.
  • Nobody has put up yesterday's Highly Exciting Big Brother 7 US for download yet. Boo! So we've taken to downloading episodes of Big Brother US from season 1, back when it was proper Big Brother. It's very interesting, I really miss our show broadcasting what the housemates think about things, rather than house politics and nothing else. Certainly the (one) daily show I've seen suggests it was better than I thought it was going to be, although we don't have time to watch all of it so will jump to the nominations, an eviction then the final I think.
  • I'm sure there was something else but I've forgotten it.
  • There's going to be a feature on top German show Extreme Activity going up tomorrow.
