We were watching some episodes of The Adventure Game the other day. They were great.
The Adventure Game is, of course, the show where three minor celebrities travelled to the Planet Arg in their spaceship, solved some puzzles and then more often than not get evaporated trying to go back to their ship. The brainchild of Ian Oliver and Patrick Dowling, puzzles involved simple scientific problems, maze solving skills, abstract logic and communication.
And it was always a pretty modern show - what producer wouldn't give his right arm for an entertainment show where stupid celebrities are made to look increasingly silly when their progress is blocked by a seemingly innocuous puzzle? So we have entertaining, educational and modern, what else could it tap into that would turn it into a winner? Of course! Telefantasy is very much in at the moment thanks to Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the forthcoming reversioning of Robin of Sherwood and its ilk. You'll note that none of these shows take an "ironic" slant on the genre (as doubtless Channel 4 would do these days), they are modern and slick versions of existing (ugh) franchises. Why couldn't you do the same thing with The Adventure Game? It already had a rather sardonic edge, you probably wouldn't have to change the actual tone of the show at all. You want to compete with current reality offerings? The Adventure Game had contestants regularly voting off resident mole Lesley Judd as much as 25 years ago. There are, of course a few things you would need to change, or at the very least update. Assuming you would have to fit the show into a thirty minute slot, some of the slower and more ponderous tasks would need to be changed - the password maze is a fine idea in principle, why not make it virtual reality now?
A modern take on The Adventure Game is just dying to be made. It would have an audience of people who fondly remembered the original and an audience who want some thought in their light entertainment. These people do exist. If you're not going to bring back The Krypton Factor Wayne Garvie, why the hell not bring this back instead? |
