Show discussion: Wipeout US

By | June 2, 2010

I’m not going to get the chance to watch this until late Thursday, so you can use this post to discuss it if you want. If I could just ask you to direct all other stuff to the post beneath (or any newer posts that happen), ta.

Sarcastic Voiceover

By | June 1, 2010

I’ve just watched Four Weddings for the first time aka Come Wedding With Me and I thought it was quite entertaining. Except for the ironically nicknamed Steve “Sparky” Parker’s whose sarcastic voiceover really lacks any kind of the spark that Dave Lamb manages.

This led me to the following wacky thoughts:

  • Surely it’s about time there was a one-off show where sarcastic voiceovers get to sit in and judge other sarcastic voiceovers, whilst a sarcastic voiceover voicesover sarcastically.
  • I think this subgenre of gameshow needs to have its own name. Criteria is that it involves people judging each other at a certain thing whilst a voiceover makes sarcastic comments in the background and purporting to be about one thing but actually being about, you know, people. This includes Come Dine With Me and Four Weddings, but does not include shows like Coach Trip which lacks the responsibility element. What should this subgenre be called?
  • They’re making special US editions of Come Dine With Me for BBC America. Is this going to work?
  • Where else can the genre go? I notice they’ve done Four 21st Birthday Parties (clever title, that), House Guest (dinner parties AND staying over), that thing with the B and Bs, what next?

Today is a public holiday in the UK

Although I’m working, obviously. But it would explain why there’s not much happening.

The Britain’s Got Talent semi-finals begin at 7:30 on ITV1 this evening and all week culminating with the Grand Final on Sunday, if you’re that way inclined.

Board of Excitement 30th May – 5th June 2010

Christ, my head:

  • The Bother Series of Poker (8pm, Sunday, Full Tilt) Basically I am on a bit of a roll so FEAR ME. Game 9 discussion page is here, alongside discussion of future dates for the final games.
  • Mission 2010 (5:45pm, Monday, CBBC) – it appears to be the grand final, all done and dusted in half an hour. I can’t claim to have watched it beyond the first week.
  • Wipeout (Tuesday, ABC) – it’s a sneak peek two-hour episode of the new season of Wipeout, this one is a Blind Date edition, where single men and women are teamed upt o tackle the courses. The season starts proper in three weeks’ time.

And well done to Davina and her Million Pound Drop, it certainly outdid my expectations over the week.

It’s the Eurovision Grand Final!

By | May 29, 2010

esc2010-eurovision-logoAnd rather brilliantly, Pete Waterman’s hit back over Dr Fox’s claims that the song is a bit average.

“He doesn’t know anything, he’s not even a REAL fox,” is a quote I have just made up (actually I made it up years ago but that’s by the by), although by calling That Sounds Good To Me “average” that is vastly overstating the quality of the song reperesenting the UK this evening.

“It’s become waylaid by people trying to be serious artists. Hang on a minute, we’re here to party! This isn’t showbusiness, it’s a song contest.”

That is true! And it just so happens several other countries have written songs you’d much rather hear at a party.

I’m pulling for Germany this evening, because I stand to win £40 in the work sweepstake if Lena’s Satellite wins, which as it’s a brilliant slice of Ellis-Bextor-esque pop it just might, provided POLITICAL VOTING doesn’t rear it’s ugly head. Although she does have quite an odd way of pronouncing words.

If you’re watching at home, feel free to come along to the Bar and offer your marks out of ten, and then we can see how in step the Bother’s Bar jury is with the Eurovision. You may be able to watch outside of Europe on http://www.eurovision.tv/esctv/future. I look forward to reading the comments in the morning.
