Incidentally…

After Million Pound Drop (The) on Channel 4 this evening, there’s Big Brother: The Inside Story on E4 which might be quite interesting. Might.

EDIT: Enjoyed this by the way. BB’s biggest problem these days, for me, is that it’s too much like work – an hour a night for three months? No thanks.

I’ve thought about it, and my opinion on The Million Pound Drop IS…

… that I don’t know what I think.

I wasn’t expecting people to want to chat about this daily, so feel free to use this post to discuss Friday and Saturday’s show.

There are plenty of reasons to criticise the show – poor set design choices (although the set generally is quite good), fairly boring questions, Davina pointing out how live it is every few minutes, largely thick contestants combined with a production that wants to give some money away but not too much and being a bit obvious about it. SO MUCH FAFFING.

On Wednesday night, right up until Will and Gemma blew the eighth question, I was bored.

And yet. And yet and yet and yet. I quite enjoyed last night: I really liked Dom and Ian and hoped they’d do well, and then saw two contestants lose it all on early questions, and the show seemed entertaining again.

If it didn’t get recomissioned I wouldn’t cry for it, but I wouldn’t jump for joy either. What an odd show.

In the meantime, why not go and watch a French pilot of it?

Show discussion: Eurovision Semi-final 2

By | May 27, 2010

esc2010-eurovision-logoIt’s the second semi-final of this this evening – BBC3, 8pm-10pm. Paddy O’Connell and Sarah Cawood are your guides.

As ever, if you’re watching, feel free to give your opinions on the songs along with marks out of ten. Someone will tot them up to form a result for the Bother’s Bar jury.

And this is the semi-final we can vote in by telephone if you live in the UK.

It’s BotherSOP Thursday!

By | May 27, 2010

pokertrophy2That’s right, it comes round so quickly. It’s BotherSOP Sunday on Sunday, and all the details are up on the BotherSOP Page. Except for the tournament ID number, which I’ve forgotten to add but will add this evening.

However, regulars, I need to have a chat about dates for the last three events. Let’s do so on the Event 9 page.

Separate Eurovision second semi-final post to follow later.

£525,000 Drop

By | May 26, 2010

Actually, possibly I should have started a new post for episode 3 after all that.

So I think it’s fair to say, the TV moment the entire show is based around is that of people losing a ton of cash on the final question and having their hopes and dreams dashed as a large amount of money slides down the chute. The only point in the show the money isn’t abstract and represents an actual amount of cash they can take home.

Well it’s happened now. And the question is: was it worth it?

I’m no particular advocate of having no sharp edges, and I don’t think the rules need to be rewritten by Americans to make it, eurgh, “nicer”. It is what it is. What it wasn’t was particularly gratifying, and to be honest I’m getting bored of the show now and all its faffing. What more does it have to offer?

It doesn’t really help that once you get over the novelty “ooh, we can only do this question LIVE!” element, the questions are a bit pub quiz machine-y, arent they?

Misc.

Lots of big threads recently, so here’s a post for any miscellaneous stuff that comes up.

  • Anonymous tip-off suggesting BB US is going to the evenly-spaced nights of Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday at 8pm ET, first show 8th July, first eviction 15th July.
  • Series 2 of The Cube records in June. Tickets from Lost in TV here.
  • Some (pretty unexciting if I’m being honest) photos from the Blind Date episode of Wipeout on Facebook.
  • Big Brother 11 UK to begin 9th June at 9pm.
