Show Discussion: The Wave

By | January 14, 2018

Weekdays, 8pm,
W

We asked W, the channel formally known as Watch, to give us a wave, and they literally have!

The Wave sees couples fly out to Portugal to CHALLENGE THE VERY OCEAN ITSELF in a game of knowledge and endurance – one of them will swim out to pontoons with increasing amounts of cash on them, at each one there is a question – get the question right and money is added to their belt. Get the question wrong and a weight is added instead. Meanwhile their partner is answering questions on the beach with Rylan Clark-Neal to earn more swim time for their partner. The Swimmer is coached and advised by professional Olympic swimmer Kerry-Anne Payne. When The Swimmer thinks they’ve gone as far as they can they must race back to the beach before the time runs out to keep the money. There’s £12,000 up for grabs.

Will Mother Nature help or hinder? This actually sounds like quite a fun idea on paper, hopefully the execution is there. Perhaps it’ll be Watch‘s biggest quiz success since Bother’s Bar rollercoaster favourite Scream If You Know The Answer with Duncan James.

Shows are an hour long, looks like they’re only on Monday to Friday this week. Watched it? Let us know what you thought in the comments.

Voting over.

Thanks very much for all the Poll 2017 votes, all that’s left is the tedious, tedious admin.

I’m hoping to do all the counting and report writing over the weekend, so fingers crossed for the results reveal sometime next week.

The Poll Of The Year 2017 closes tonight.

You’ve got until 23:59 to submit any votes.

Meanwhile the new series of Release the Hounds begins tonight at 9pm on ITV2.

Also a new series of Against the Flow, a very stylish Russian fan project version of Avanti un Altro‘s 21 Questions Wrong endgame turned into its own show has just begun and now includes a HOTSEAT style qualifying game. You probably won’t understand what they’re saying but can still appreciate the slickness.

Show Discussion: Britain’s Brightest Family

By | January 9, 2018

Wednesdays, 8pm,
ITV

This is interesting, an altogether rare animal of a 30 minute primetime quiz in 2018. In fact we struggle to name any 30 minute quiz in the modern era. This one is hosted by none-other than Chaser and Bother’s Bar favourite Anne Hegerty in full Governess mode which is a very interesting use of built-up channel talent – she can certainly answer questions but can she ask them?

16 families take part in a knockout competition across the series leaving one to win a holiday of a lifetime. It sounds like there are rounds testing mental agility as well as general knowledge questions, and it also sounds like the kid on the team will have to decide who will face the questions. And there are armchairs that raise and lower.

It’s sandwiched between two episodes of Coronation Street so it has every chance of doing well but will it stand on its own merits? Let us know what you thought of it in the comments.

There are UK-centric games of HQ now.

Many of you will probably be familiar with HQ, the live trivia app game, where if you get through 12 questions and it doesn’t bug out on you you get to share in a jackpot with loads of Americans. It’s Massively Multiplayer Everybody’s Equal, effectively.

I can’t get excited about it, but it sounds like there are now UK-centric games at UK-centric times.

In other news the Poll of the Year 2017 closes on Thursday night. Get your votes in!

We’ll have a discussion post for Britain’s Brightest Family tomorrow.
