Board of Excitement 3rd July – 9th July 2011

By | July 3, 2011

Obviously if you hadn’t realised, the planned game of HORSE that was due to go ahead this evening has had to be postponed because of the site hosting it being suspended. I therefore urge you all to join Brig’s Poker Club (yes, it’s to the theme of Rolf’s Cartoon Club) IF YOU DARE and we’ll get a game up and running soon.

In the meantime:

  • Pointless – I’m very pleased that Xander and Richard have had a promotion to BBC1 as this is certainly my pick of the current crop of daytime quizzes. With a French version incoming, I’m interested to see how it translates, because it is fair to say that a large part of the appeal of the Brit version is the hosts. (5:15pm, Monday-Friday, BBC1)
  • The Amazing Race Australia – We must be due another non-elimination leg soon. (Seven Network, Monday)
  • Fort Boyard 2010 – This is, like, so last year. (8:06pm, Monday, TV5)
  • 101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow (ABC, Tuesday)
  • The Challenge: The Rivals (MTV US, Wednesday)
  • Fort Boyard 2011 – Some discussion of it here. I hope episode two is a bit easier to find than episode one. (7:35pm UK, France 2, Saturday)
  • It’s my 30th birthday – I’m not going to be here for it. (Saturday)

Show discussion: Fort Boyard France 2011

By | July 2, 2011

Well this is very, VERY exciting because I wasn’t expecting to be writing this at all given last year’s response. However the one true version of Fort Boyard appears to be back on screens this evening on France 2 at 8:35pm (7:35 UK time) for the series premiere, starring lots of old Miss Frances and a man.

The exciting thing is I don’t know how easy it’s going to be to watch outside of France. Happily last year they put new episodes up on the website for a fortnight which you could view internationally but there’s no guarantees they’ll do it this year. It will be on pluzz.fr, but not outside of France (anyone coming up with a cheap way around it get’s 20 Botherpoints, although I will pay to use a proxy if necessary). Maybe someone will stream it live on Justin.tv, like with Schlag den Raab, although I wouldn’t be getting my hopes up. And anyway, I’m not going to get the chance to watch it until tomorrow anyway, so.

The first rule of Poker Club is…

I’ve set up Brig’s Poker Club as a permananent addition for occasional games played out of Bother Series of Poker hours. Do have a look, I intend to have a game in the next few weeks.

But don’t worry, I haven’t neglected “normal” Bother’s Bar competitions, look out for the return of Word Up! in the next fortnight or so.

Contestant Call

By | June 29, 2011

This is quite lengthy so just to be sure you don’t miss it, our reaction to Full Tilt’s suspension can be found here. Preview: it sounds like HORSE is off the menu.

Anyway, friend of the Bar Paul Brassey is after contestants for a run through:

The BBC’s Format Development team are looking for teams of contestants (two per team) to take part in a run-through of a brand new daytime quiz in front of an important BBC commissioner.

Where: BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane, London W12 7RJ
When: Monday 18th July 2011 – 11am – 4.30pm (approx)

This is your chance to:

  • Try out our exciting new format before anybody else!
  • Prove your intellectual worth by vanquishing all before you!
  • See the sixth floor of TVC (where all the important folk sit) before they turn it into a Starbucks or something!

We’re looking for quiz fans with a decent level of general knowledge (this is for the old Pointless / Perfection slot, so think along those lines) who are bright and enthusiastic.

As this is a run-through there’s no prize, I’m afraid (we are funded by the license fee after all). We will, however, cover reasonable travel expenses (if you’re not sure what’s “reasonable” just ask) and provide lunch, snacks and unlimited hot drinks. You will also earn the eternal gratitude of our whole team and, as an additional enticement, should the format go forward to series we will guarantee an audition to anybody taking part in this run.

N.B. Although the show is designed to be a competition between pairs we realise it’s not easy for two people to get time off from their work or studies for such pursuits, so we’ll also consider pairing up individuals on the day. In other words please don’t be put off getting in touch if you can’t find somebody willing and able to pair up with you.

If you’re interested then please email paul.brassey@bbc.co.uk with the following information:

  • Your name, age, hometown and occupation, and that of your teammate (if applicable).
  • A photo of yourself and one of your teammate (if applicable) – one from facebook or similar is fine.
  • Your quiz experience (televised or otherwise). We’re very happy to hear from people who’ve been on TV before so please be honest. If you know the dates that any quiz shows you’ve appeared on were televised then please include them. Also include any links you’re aware of to TV appearances that might be on YouTube or similar.

Many thanks. Hope to hear from some of you soon.

It’ll probably be a lot of fun, so get to it, Punters.

Someone’s shot the HORSE

Breaking: It sounds like Full Tilt have had their licence revoked. I’m not at home so can’t check to see what happens if you try loading the software.

I’m hoping everyone who had money in their account gets it back – it sounds like it might be held until the end of July at least. Needless to say, I am very annoyed, sorry to everyone I encouraged to join the site to play in the BotherSOP and obviously HORSE Hilarity is off.
