Slow news week.

However, @artbegotti pointed a video out to me this afternoon claiming it to be a bit Fort Boyard-esque, whilst also being from the mind of Bother’s Bar favourite Aussie comedian Shaun Micallef – as it turns out the very sketch somebody introduced me to his show with:

(Incidentally there’s usually a “gameshow segment” in The Micallef P(r)ogram(me), many of which are very funny indeed so do check them out.)

Fort Boyard already has “pied marin” – sea legs, and it’s one of our favourite games. But imagine something a bit puzzlier and spatial awareness-y, how incredible could it be? Would probably require one of the Fort’s bigger rooms, especially if it would have to rotate.

Speaking of Aussie comics, it looks like the second series of Bother’s Bar favourite 31 Questions is wrapping up filming soon, so fingers crossed it won’t be long until broadcast!

Meanwhile they’re looking for contestants for The Million Pound Drop, if you want a go you can apply here.

Things That Are On feat. Fifty 50 26

TERNIGHT!

  • Who Wants to be a Millionaire: The People Play (ITV, 9pm) – Once again real people with real sob stories will get to sit in the chair for the chance to walk away at £20,000. But this time there’s an iOS app! Although I think you’ll be able to play along on the website as well. Tonight’s one is live, but they seem to be recording another one for future use. We’re still waiting for the JLS break-up special.
  • And that’s on at the same time as The Apprentice! (BBC1, 9pm) What hilarious things will the stupid contestants come out with tonight? Episode two is on tomorrow, and further episodes go out on Wednesdays.
  • First series Fun House and Knightmare on Challenge on Friday from 10pm. Kids telly in prime time, it’ll be interesting to see how that does.
  • This Saturday it’s the last Schlag den Raab for a few months. We’ll be providing a live commentary again. This time there’s €1.5m in the pot and Hurts are performing live. So.

In other news, ITV are recording a pilot of Take One For The Team on Friday 24th May. Can’t go I have an engagement, but if you go do let us know what you think. Be warned, it’s at Pinewood.

And look! It’s the new Fifty 50 Show this week featuring David Bodycombe and new panellist Jack Waley-Cohen of our good friends at QuizQuizQuiz.com. Check it out.

Weekend round-up

By | May 4, 2013

BOOM! First thing’s first, it’s the second deepstack game of the BSOP tomorrow, $11 to play. Even if you’ve no interest in the league there should be a reasonable amount of money flying round and you’ve got a chance to grab some of it. It’s at 8pm, do come and join us.

NEXT! We’re fascinated by the Going for Gold app. We’re currently having a think about how we’re doing our app reviews because half of the ones listed on our app review page don’t exist any more – we might end up moving the ones done to the specials board and incorporating new things onto the main page. Anyway, it’s made by the same people who bought you Mastermind, A Question of Sport and Strike It Lucky none of which were terribly good. Have Deluxe Games turned a corner with Going for Gold? I think this screenshot sums the app up:

And well done if you got that at home. If you like the idea of repeating questions after two games, questions not turning up sometimes, poor implementations of the rules, Henry Kelly sounding bored and basic things being wrong (Henry Kelly says you’ve got two minutes for Four In a Row. You get one.) then it’s all yours for 69p on the iOS app store. And there are in-app purchases for question packs available! It also has Game Center connections, but it doesn’t register that fact unless you go to the leaderboards first. Going for Gold, there.

In other news it sounds like Countdown will be moving back to 3:10 from May 20th (I’m not quite sure what uplift in viewers is expected, but I think it will be disappointing, especially as there is competition in the 3-4pm slot now) and that evidently The Chase will be getting a few weeks off as Paul O Grady’s doing his chatshow again.

Election Special

By | May 3, 2013

POLITICS! And what better thing to put after election Thursday than a clip of late nineties sort-of hit If I Ruled The World, hosted by Clive Anderson and devised by Richard off Pointless.

It strikes me that I Couldn’t Disagree More predates Fighting Talk‘s Defend the Indefensible by a number of years, so you’d think Osman would be better at it.

IN OTHER EXCITING NEWS: 5 Minutes to a Fortune has apparently been sold to TF1 as Pas une seconde à perdre! (Not a Second to Lose! We’re always intrigued by a TF1 interpretion of a format) meanwhile there appears to be some controversy over a question.

Show Discussion: Dara O Briain’s School of Hard Sums S2

By | May 1, 2013

Wednesday, 8pm,
Dave

A game in the loosest sense, but if there’s a show that’s likely to be of interest to genre fans it’s likely to be this one.

For episode one Andrew Maxwell and Mark Watson go up against Dara in solving Marcus du Sautoy’s dastardly maths challenges. But is it easier to find answers in a comedy practical way or by using maths (it’s usually maths)?

Enjoyed the first series, although we’re hoping the atmosphere for series two is a bit lighter (or at least a little bit wackier like the Japanese show its based on), the first series had good content but felt a little bit too much like being done in a library.
