Royal Wedding Thursday

By | April 27, 2011

It’s the big day tomorrow, and what better way to celebrate than a burst of Love At First Sight with Bruno Brookes? Three girls, three guys, they answer questions then secretly decide which one of the opposite sex they fancy. If they both pick each other they get to go out on a lovely date then come back on a later show to try and win some fabulous prizes and even a holiday by answering Mr and Mrs style questions then shooting at the big prize board. Try and avoid that broken heart! Responsible for two marraiges if the UKGS.C entry is anything to go by, which isn’t a bad batting average for this sort of thing really, even if neither contestant was actually on the same show. Anyway, fun show, here’s a clip:

Good theme. You’ll note Zoe Ball is listed as a researcher. It was the Soviet Union’s most popular show at one point, if you believe Stephen Leahy, and I know it also at least sold to Spain.

Edit: Incidentally Channel 4 piloting a show called Reflex which appears to be The Cube But Not In The Cube By The People Who Made The Cube. Our discussion of it starts here.

Royal Wedding Wednesday

By | April 27, 2011

Alright, what’s most surprising about the trawl through Youtube is that not only did Bob’s Your Uncle sell internationally variously throughout Europe (where it seemed to be called “Honeymoon” in the local language) but actually the last remake wasn’t that long ago. Witness, if you would, Hasta Que La Tele No Separe from 2006. It is Spanish and not the first version of the show they had:

Royal Wedding Tuesday

By | April 26, 2011

Here’s a show I enjoyed a lot more than it probably deserved whilst growing up – Bob’s Your Uncle, where newlyweds compete in various games in order to win £3,000 and a car under the auspices of Sir Lord Bob Monkhouse.

Here is an edited version of the Sea of Matrimony round. to open the show each couple were asked a survey question. Get it right and they were awarded either some saucepans or a handpump to help bail the boat they’d be sitting in round two with. Get it wrong and they were lumbered with luggage or (if I recall correctly), a large wooden cat to weigh the boat down with. In the Sea of Matrimony the couples sat in boats with holes in and were asked questions, get it wrong and a family member would join them in the boat. The first couple to capsize is eliminated from the competition. The show ran on Saturday nights for two series.

Thanks to wet wedding clothes fetishists, there are quite a few more videos of the Sea of Matrimony on Youtube which is nice, although it’s a shame we couldn’t find any other round examples.

Meanwhile, Lord Sir Alan Sugar has revealed that the new series of The Apprentice starts Tuesday May 10th at 9pm, the second episode Wednesday May 11th and then on Wednesdays following that.

It’s the Bother’s Bar Royal Wedding Theme Week!

By | April 25, 2011

I have literally just decided this, and that means that all week I’ll be featuring clips found on Youtube regarding the royals, weddings or indeed both. But mainly weddings.

We kick things off with hilarious Saturday night Not A Hit The Shane Richie Experience. Based loosely (we believe) on the long-running Dutch show Love Letters (we did a feature on the German version not so long ago), the winning couple got married there and then at the end of the show and got a honeymoon. When the show came back as Love Me Do, they got a dream wedding instead.

This is a heavily edited episode from the point of view of one of the contestants:

Board of Excitement 24th-30th April 2011

By | April 24, 2011

Not much happening:

  • It’s Easter! Yum. (Sunday)
  • The Cube – last week’s episode was very very good indeed. Series 3 discussion here. Note the earlier time, there’s a special episode of Coronation Street on after. (6:30pm, ITV1, Sunday)
  • Celebrity Total Wipeout – The last episode of series four. (5:30pm, BBC1, Holiday Monday)
  • The Voice – it’s big in Holland so that means it’s also going to be big in the US, don’t forget this is going to be NBC’s biggest reality hit in years (not my words you understand). Needless to say we’re ready with fair and impartial graph making equipment. You can’t say NBC aren’t trying, they’ve been airing extended clips before Jay Leno and Saturday Night Live this week and given what they’ve apparently paid for it they need it to be a hit really. It’s a pity then they’ve decided to launch it towards the mid-late stages of American Idol which hasn’t really collapsed, then. (Tuesday and a repeat on Wednesday after the highly-rated Minute to Win It, NBC)
  • The Royal Wedding – because when you think about it, marriage is like the ULTIMATE gameshow isn’t it? (Basically all week on all channels)
  • The Million Pound Drop – Actually it’s on at 9pm on both Fridays and Saturdays now, which seeing as it seems to do better at 10pm is another winning move from Channel 4. In case you’re wondering, the following shows on the next two Fridays are a repeat of My Big Fat Royal Gypsy Wedding from the night previous and Jimmy Carr: Telling Jokes. (9pm, Channel 4, Friday and Saturday)

Show discussion: Don’t Scare the Hare

By | April 23, 2011

Well it’s been a long time coming and the road has been torturous but finally this evening we will see if Don’t Scare the Hare was worth bothering with in the end. It looks like a, er, very different proposition from the rather more straight-laiced pilot of legend from about 18 months ago. It’s likely to appeal to kids, but in this weather will any be watching? And despite putting out a big press release saying Miranda Hart was going to be involved, she’s not actually in it at all.

It starts at 5:25pm on BBC1.
