The Devil’s Plan September 26th

By | August 30, 2023

We’re EXTREMELY EXCITED for this, as we understand it it’s basically The Genius Mk 2, and it’s out on Netflix on September 26th.

Perhaps The Devil’s Plan will be thing that gets The Genius UK across the line, although by then everyone will be talking about The Devil’s Plan, so that’s an exciting fillip.

We’ve got no bloody idea what’s happening with Amazon’s Takeshi’s Castle

By | August 29, 2023

In theory, in theory, going by a press release, Romesh and Tom Take on Takeshi’s Castle ought to launch tomorrow in the UK (August 30th), we’ve seen no promo for it at all. And now it looks like we’ll be getting the original Japanese dubs with subtitles on September 26th 27th now.

The quietness is a bit worrying isn’t it? One of our German correspondents suggests their dubbed version was nonsensical and pretty terrible (and sent us a link to this), about ten minutes of people failing the same thing before moving on, and a rather complex episode arc. Nobody watches Takeshi’s Castle for the complex narrative, but you also need light and shade – you need to be impressed by someone who can actually make the challenge occasionally, otherwise what’s the point? Hopefully our edit will be a bit smarter.

Edit: Rom and Tom’s Takeshi’s Castle is now up! Episodes about 40 minutes, so some sharp cuts to the Japanese ones.

Bob Barker

Another US gameshow big beast, Bob Barker, has passed away at 99.

Everyone will know him best as the long-time host of The Price is Right so as that’s extremely easy to come by on Youtube, here’s a 1961 episode of Truth or Consequences.

Great spot from JGAdventureZone on TwiX:

Also of Taskmaster interest: the following series is filming at Pinewood end of September (25th – 29th to be exact) – that’s the one after the one that’s about to go out on C4 soon – tickets SRO.

Show Discussion: The Finish Line

By | August 20, 2023

Weekdays, 4:30pm
BBC1

New quiz from the makers of The Chase, contestants try and win up to £5,000 in a quiz version of those donkey-derby machines you get in funfairs (you know the sort, where you roll the ball in the hole and your donkey goes along a track) only this time the contestants are in chariots and you have to get questions right to propel yourself forward. Hopefully they’ve nailed the kinetic energy.

Really lovely idea (also crucially, easy to explain to others as “that show with the moving chairs”) – hopefully there’s little a bit more to it than one correct answer = one space but perhaps that’ll be enough, who knows. Capital Radio breakfast show and Broman‘s voiceover Roman Kemp is a new face for quizzing, although it sounds like Saturday morning legend Sarah Greene will be asking the questions.

We pointed out ages ago that it’s basically the *exact opposite* of Andi Peters chair-a-thon Ejector Seat which was a neat idea that didn’t quite nail the execution. Fingers crossed this will nail the execution.

Is Survivor US about to become streamable in the UK?

By | August 15, 2023

So this was spotted on The Artist Formerly Known As Twitter last night:

I should add that I can’t verify it, if I look it up on Amazon UK it doesn’t seem to be returning anything, and I don’t have the Prime Video app on my phone because I’ve got too much dignity to watch things on a six inch rectangle. The chat in the replies suggests this might be through Paramount Plus which you can subscribe to through Amazon and could be the only worthwhile thing to subscribe to P+ for. What a pity it didn’t launch with P+ when it might have been useful. Hopefully this isn’t a fake! Edit: Here it is, look.

There has been no legitimate way to watch Survivor US in the UK since it launched, apart from the very first series being shown on Challenge TV back in the day. I mean, this obviously hasn’t stopped the diehards, but still.
