Show Discussion: First and Last

By | January 4, 2020

Saturday, 8:15pm,
BBC1

Here’s a format that’s been knocking around for absolute donkeys years, originally piloted with Justin Lee Collins about a decade ago for Channel 4 (IIRC), an unsuccessful run in Italy, another pilot with Lee Mack and finally, FINALLY the BBC have decided the time is right for First and Last with Jason Manford for primetime Saturday night viewing.

First and Last sees eleven players battling it out for a prize of up to £10,000 by playing a series of games, the golden rule is that you’re eliminated if you finish any game first or last.

Let’s hope the show is better than the mediocrity required of its contestants, I can’t help but feel the First and Last Series gag writes itself, but it’s got six episodes to prove its worthiness. Let us know what you think in the comments.

This sounds like great fun to be a part of.

Quoting TV’s David Bodycombe:

Hi, if anyone is free in London on the 10th or 17th of January, we’re running a few game playtests. Genius Game-style negotiation skills more important than knowledge (in fact, there are no quiz questions). If interested, please see here for more: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeZgV6zeIcu0AHVCQzdao4Fyg5R4g-tlruM6Zbto2lWydBqcA/viewform

As someone who’s done a few runthroughs and as someone who takes part in local econopmics experiments, I would be very tempted to go myself as this sort of thing tends to be a lot of fun, but I’m not able to unfortunately.

In other news we have TWO Show Discussion posts scheduled to go up tomorrow, First and Last and The Masked Singer, both about 9am when I’m likely to still be in bed.

In other other news, the Poll of the Year 2019 is going swimmingly. Lines close next Friday night. Keeeeeep voting!

Show Discussion: Quizmaster

By | December 29, 2019

Sunday, 6pm,
ITV

Jeremy Vine hosts as fifteen of the most successful TV quizzers in the country battle it out to see who is the quizziest of them all in a format which isn’t just 15-to-1 but does feature our contestants being whittled down to one winner across 90 minutes.

Quizmaster, a 90-minute peak time special, sees 15 previous contestants on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Mastermind, The Chase, Fifteen to One and University Challenge compete in a high-stakes battle to become ultimate quiz champion.

My guess is ITV have rather overstated the stakes here rather given that there appears to be no real prize (just as it ever was in Serious Quiz Land, I suppose). It is possibly worth pointing out that this sort of thing has been tried before and not really worked out, so we’ll see if this bucks the trend – it might be something that would benefit from some US style glitz and glamour. Let’s see! Let us know what you think in the comments.

We were *this close* to a Cyberdrome Crinkley Bottom

By | December 27, 2019

Here’s a fun thing that’s turned up over the Festive period, the guys who ran the original Cyberdrome Crystal Maze (the proto versions of the Crystal Maze Live Experience about 25 years before the Crystal Maze Live Experience) have dragged their original website out from the archives and it’s pretty interesting. Not least the prices (£2.50 per person at Southampton! Compare to £50 per person in 2019(*)) and the fact in the News section we almost got The Cyberdrome Crinkey Bottom, based on Noel’s House Party.

I’ve linked to this before, but here are some Americans exploring an abandoned Cyberdrome Crystal Maze set.

(*) Yes I’m aware that The Cyberdrome Crystal Maze is only an half hour experience compared to a 60-90 one, and a largely automated set-up compared to having an actual person go round with you to enhance the experience. Still, though.
