Forecasting Sleet

By | February 2, 2017

Good news! Murder in Successville‘s coming back for a third series on BBC3, which we kind of knew already, but still. Guest sleuths this series include Richard Osman and Reggie Yates. Surprised Xander and Richard haven’t turned up as gangsters or something yet.

In other Reggie Yates news, the new series of Release the Hounds starts next Thursday.

Contestants wanted for pilot

By | January 31, 2017

Congratulations to Youngest Media for having a contestant call wanting propagating right as I was drawing a blank for something to do a post on. Click for larger if you want.

Youngest are David Flynn and Lucas Church’s production company. And hey! I note that Stuart Shawcross, the man behind Bother’s Bar favourite 5 Minutes To A Fortune is working for them as well.

But confusingly David Young’s company is Hindsight Productions.

A sound buy

By | January 29, 2017

I was asked if I could write a very basic guide to setting up some mixing software so you can play audio over Google Hangouts or Skype like we do (now) on Bother’s Bar Game Night so I’ve finally got around to writing it, do let us know how you get on. It’s also under Miscellaneous on the Specials board if need to find it quickly.

Apropos of nothing:

I would have suggested all four but there are no trick questions on Millionaire so I don’t know what the answer is. Probably worthwhile making sure you join us though.

Edit: I’ve literally just discovered Special Forces – Ultimate Hell Week starts tonight at nine on BBC2, we really enjoyed the first one.

Au Suivant!

By | January 28, 2017

With thanks to Jack to alerting us to the new Turkish version of Avanti un Altro! which is OK but a bit baffling.

However this morning we watched Au Suivant, the French-Canadian version currently airing on Radio Canada which you can watch using the dark arts. It’s actually very good, by far the best version of the format outside of Italy. It plays down the comedy aspect that defines the Italian show (although don’t take that to mean it gets rid of it, host Stéphane Bellavance is as congenial as they come and looks like Chris Moyles) whilst keeping the energy up and plays up the quiz aspect – around fifteen rounds in its 35 minutes of main game. It does not have a regular set of characters, instead twice a show the stage opens up and people are bought in to show off their talent or skill and then a round of questions is asked on it. The carousel seems to have a lot more special scrolls, including bonus prizes.

I really like it, it’s proof the show can work without Paolo Bonolis if it’s approached the right way, although I’ve got no idea how well it’s rating. It’s been running weekdaily since September.
