It looks like The Chase is going off again…

By | July 18, 2017

…because according to this press release Cash Trapped is returning to the 5pm slot for an extended run from 31st July.

Don’t worry, we’ve already done the ‘The Chase is getting axed again’ gags on Twitter. This is the first year it’s had two breaks in a year though, although this one is during the more traditional August.

Which means I still don’t know what they were playing at with Babushka.

Edit: Because I can’t be bothered to do a new post for it, there’s discussion of Weakest Link returning for Children in Need with a view to a series in the comments.

Still Tenable and Alphabetical to come at some point, too

I would expect Tenable to keep its 3pm slot where it was doing very well. I reckon Alphabetical will probably end up at 3pm as well, probably before Tenable. I think Tipping Point will probably remain a 4pm crutch throughout.

It’s fine as Bradley Walsh will still be on the screen so everybody is happy!

In a slightly bizarre twist Anne Robinson has decided The Weakest Link should come back…or at least the celebrity version.

One Children In Need special coming up but as the article states even if it is from the ever reliable source of Daily Mail they’ll probably be hoping for a series afterwards.

I can see it working, although a bit strange of Anne to suddenly make such a decision considering she only recently quit doing Watchdog!

I can sort of see it, although I would wonder about potential alternate hosts.

It was bought back in France recently and seemed to do OK IIRC.

“But instead of being a teatime format, the 2018 version will be a primetime Saturday night series.

“This time around, it will be a celebrities at the helm which will really give it a fresh and fun new feel.””

They’re making it sound like we haven’t already had an evening celebrity version of Weakest Link

Aren’t/weren’t Mel and Sue (and Mary and Paul) incredibly good value for the BBC? Considering how big a show Bake-Off was last year, I’m shocked Sue wasn’t getting 150k for a series of that alone, with Mel cracking 150k only in combination with other shows she did for the BBC as well. (Compare with the Strictly judges’ salaries.)

It’s not quite a like-for-like comparison but if Ant and Dec are apparently taking ITV for a total of ten million per year (granted, for at least three of ITV’s biggest shows) then Mel and Sue combined for perhaps a quarter-mil is amazing value. In general, I say well done to the BBC!

(Different discussion question at work today: how much do you think Jeff Stelling must be getting from Sky?)

That depends on whether their salary is met by the BBC or through Love Productions (which I don’t think counts) – Sue not being on the list as well strikes me as a bit fishy in that regard. Certainly if you told me 15 years ago Mel and Sue would be fronting the biggest show on television I’d have offered you Leicester City sized odds.

Mel has certainly be rewarded for her loyalty with a load of flops. Still, good if you get easily bored I suppose.

Yes, these payments are only those directly funded by the licence fee, and exclude payments from independent production companies and BBC Worldwide. If Mel and Sue are paid via Love, which seems likely, then they will be receiving much more.

Mel is probably paid for her other shows and some radio work.
