From the Koreans who bought you The Genius here’s the BBC’s new singing non-singing singing show. TV’s Hardest Working Man 2021 Paddy McGuinness asks a pair of contestants to work out which of the singers in front of them can actually sing and which ones are tone deaf, by watching them do everything other than actually sing. If they can correctly eliminate the bad singers and identify a good singer at the end, they take home £10,000 – but if the final decision is a bad singer then that singer wins the £10,000 all to themselves.
Jimmy Carr, Alison Hammond and Amanda Holden are on hand to help as well as a guest singer.

I didn’t understand it at first and still am not sure. Presumably there are between one and three good singers each week, but I didn’t feel that it was made clear until the final round. The first round is useless and was a really unpromising start. But overall, I think it’s a good show and I’ll watch it every week.
This is definitely the more entertaining of the two talent games, it’s a detective show (the celebrity investigators even have Molbooks) and a more fun puzzle than the one Game of Talents offers, and people basically love making judgements about other people based on not very much evidence. And people belting out tunes quite badly is pretty funny.
It’s probably about ten minutes longer than it ought to be. Still though.
It also does WHERE! ARE! YOU! MARK! which is apparently the in thing.
I hope we’re not going to get the same 88 pre-intro intro every week.
Out of the two, I Can See Your Voice is the one I’d watch again. It felt like “a bit of fun”, albeit one with game mechanics I didn’t warm to entirely. Game of Talents felt like work.
As an avid fan of ICSYV’s South Korean original, I was concerned the UK version would be a car crash.
Luckily, it’s not a complete fender bender, more a door scraped by a shopping trolley.
The format is slightly modified to give it an actual gameshow element (why have shame as the penalty when we can put actual money on the line!), and the rounds aren’t strictly the same as the SK version either.
There’s also the slight issue of the bad-singer contestants only having to lie about their singing ability. In the SK original, they had larger backstories for them (e.g. If they can sing, they’re songwriters for artist A B and C, if they can’t, they’re three bin men from Croyden).
It’s also too early to tell if they will be doing the group thing (where only one member of the group has to be a bad singer for the entire group to be judged as such) as that can provide some pretty funny bait-and-switch reveals.
My only real problem with it is that it’s more banter-based than I would want it to be.
If they could trim down the banter by just a few minutes in total, they could easily give like a minute more singing time to each of the good singers and the selected final singer (We don’t really need a long stretch of bad singing, Small amount to prove it? Fine, but otherwise you’re punishing the audience).
The good singers didn’t really get much of a chance to show their stuff, which is their precise reason for appearing on the show in the first place since they can’t win the £10K at all.
Cut out like 30 seconds of “proper bants” or do other smaller time efficiencies, and give that to the singers.
That’s all I would really want the producers to change.
I know that it’s hard to deal with a show under current pandemic conditions, especially with the lack of a real audience (a later version with said audience will probably do a lot better). But they tried, and managed to make a show that’s actually not that bad.
Restructure the time allocations to favour the better singers a little bit, get some high quality acts in there as well, and it’ll do well down the line.

Sounds like these numbers have basically flipped for ep 2,which I think is to be expected.
