Board of Excitement 18th March – 24th March 2012

By | March 18, 2012

It’s the Board of Excitement Mother’s Day SPECIAL! I say special, it’s exactly the same as all the other ones. Still, this one comes with extra freaking-out-American-ness, as they celebrate their Mother’s Day on a different day because they have to be different.

  • The Bother Series of Poker Round Six – Mother’s Day SPECIAL! I say special, it’s exactly the same as all the other ones. £5.50 to enter, open to all regardless of ability or league ambition. We’re halfway after this game! (8pm, Sunday, Pokerstars)
  • Don’t Stop Me Now – aka 101 Ways To Leave a Talent Show (joke copyright Buzzerblog) (8pm, Sunday, Sky One)
  • Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Mother’s Day SPECIAL! I say special, it’s exactly the same as all the other ones. Steve Pemberton, Anthony Cotton and Samantha Womack team up with their mums to win lots of money for charity, and hopefully a viewer at home. (8:30pm, Sunday, ITV1)
  • Only Connect Sport Relief Special – it’s a shame Sport Relief doesn’t really have a “thing” like Pudsey’s eyepatch or Comic Relief’s red noses. Maybe Victoria Coren will do the missing vowels round whilst running a mile. But one thing YOU won’t be running a mile from, right, are these celebrities!  The teams are the Cutters (Nick Hornby, Mark Gatiss, Samira Ahmed) and the Backhanders (Ian Hislop, Stephen Mangan and Allison Pearson). (8:30pm, Monday, BBC4)
  • Four Rooms – Last year’s surprise hit is BACK! (8pm, Wednesday, C4)
  • Accumulate! – It’s the last one ever! Now into its second season, according to the website. Dan Peake won some sort of lifetime student television acheievement award the other night, apparently. (Wendesday, RU:ON)
  • The Apprentice – This has started a little bit earlier this year. Exciting. (9pm, Wednesday, BBC1)
  • Sport ReliefPlease give generously. (Basically all day, BBC)
  • Winter Wipeout Celebrity Special – why they’re showing this now and not before the rugby and saving Pointless Celebs for a full run I do not know. (6pm, Saturday, BBC1)
  • The Voice UK – It’s been a long build up, but it’s finally here. (7pm, Saturday, BBC1)
  • Britain’s Got Talent – It’s the Saturday night TV clash we’ve all been waiting for. (8pm, Saturday, ITV1)
  • The Million Pound Drop – Live! Now at one hour and forty five minutes, The Drop returns next weekend on Saturday and Sunday before going back to trad. Friday and Saturday rotation. This Saturday (the day) two of The Saturdays (the band) will be playing for charity. Apparently this series will be featuring some exciting twists – fingers crossed for a shoehorned in prisoner’s dilemma element!!!! (9:20pm, Saturday, C4)

We might try and watch Elton vs Simon – The Liveshow on Pro Sieben next Saturday as well. It probably won’t last six hours like Schlag den Raab did last night.

Doesn’t it have the sock? Although I don’t know how they’d do that.

It won’t last six hours but Elton Vs Simon: The Live Show has been given a 2:45 slot.

For those who don’t know. Elton Vs Simon is based on the Canadian show Kenny Vs Spenny but ProSieben took it to another level. They tweaked the format and turned it into a studio programme. Rather than have one contest (which Kenny Vs Spenny had on each show) they had mini contests. Some in the studio, some pre-recorded on a OB. I think this is the first time they are doing the show live. The contests I have seen include who can score the most basketball shots whilst on a treadmill and who can taste the most cocktails but tasting them by throwing the contents at their face.

I’m impressed with the studio version and surprised this hasn’t be performed on ITV as it would work a full show for Ant Vs Dec.

On the topic of German shows. Schlag den Raab rating for last night (taken from Wikipedia).

    Total viewers – 2.94 million
Viewers in 14-49 age group – 1.91 million

    Audience share – 14.3%
Audience share for 14-49 age group – 22.6%

German TV networks take the 14-49 age group very seriously over there. The viewers is slightly down to previous shows (most shows can get above 3 million) but the audience share is about the same in comparison.

SHARE IS BOLLOCKS BOLLOCKS BOLLOCKS I AM NOT INTERESTED IN SHARE, SOMETHING AMERICAN EXECS COME UP WITH TO CON ADVERTISERS AND FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES WHEN THEIR SHOWS DON’T ACTUALLY DO VERY WELL.

      So there we are.

Same in radio with the Rajar figures. There are so many different figures for stations to parp on about to listeners/advertisers its actually misleading.

Best one was a station that increased its average listening hours per listener by over two hours per week. They went to town over it on air and in the press.
However the Rajar spreadsheet didn’t lie so when you looked at the total audience share there were 2.2% less listeners tuned to the station that a year ago – and had been overtaken by two competitiors in the market.

Looking forward to Elton V Simon next week. Some of the challenges sound almost like a spoof versions of what you would see on SDR.

Of course you’ll get spin from all sides with competing figures. Total audience hours is surely the one that matters though for radio stations.

Interesting that the key demo in Germany is 14-49, rather than 18-49 as it is in the US. And I often wonder why we always hear total viewer counts and not demo numbers in this country even though advertising revenue must surely still be largely based on ratings in particular demographics (the Champions League final last year had advertising costs comparable to the previous year’s X-Factor final despite getting nothing like as many viewers, because of the demographic makeup of the football audience).

I didn’t think it that bad – well produced, although only having three ways to leave is a bit of a swizz.

Also, how predictable are the audience? I picked the winner within about ten seconds of him singing. Christopher wuz robbed.
