Just listening to the podcast now, and I’m loving the ideas that Lewis, Travis and Caroline were coming up with for game shows that could be made into board games. I said some time back in a tweet that I often tried to make home versions of game shows on the cheap.
Many years back, I made a card game version of In The Grid, the Channel 5 show hosted by Les Dennis. When it was on, I would tape episodes to watch and I would note down what were on the squares such as the cash amounts for the gold squares, and the percentages for the bonus squares, steal squares and penalty squares. I could see if I can try the game out with my anime group to see if they like it or not.
Speaking of my anime group, I did make a home-made Breakaway track and played an anime-inspired version of the game with them, using questions that I had researched. I’m in the middle of making a home version of The Chase as well, using another home-made board and the questions from the 10-episode trial series of the show.
For a version of Duel, you could make it on the cheap using 20 poker chips from a poker set and using either a Millionaire boxed game or quiz book for the questions. Maybe have them at a minimum of the £2,000 level and a maximum of the £32,000 level so they’re not too easy or too hard. That’s an idea…
I totally agree, though. It IS nicer to have a proper version of a game show board game rather than making it yourself, but with the price of board games now which are usually in the region of £20-£30, making a version yourself is a more viable option unless you happen to get lucky and find them in charity shops. I managed to get a Pointless board game for something like £1.50 from a charity shop which was nice, and I tweeted few months ago about finding a game called Fact Or Crap which is all about true-or-false questions which you can make a version of Perfection out of, which I tried to do on Twitter and failed miserably! 😀
Musical guests for Schlag den Raab on Saturday: Miley Cyrus, Jessie J and Birdy. Some proper big names there.
