Show Discussion: Schlag den Star

By | September 8, 2011

The new series of Schlag den Star begins tonight (7:15 UK time) on Pro Sieben.

It’s basically the same as Schlag den Raab except it’s smaller stakes, nine games and the contestant can call upon Stefan Raab to play for them once. And obviously it’s against a celebrity, and much shorter.

Clone-ic Irrigation

Here’s a story that’s doing the rounds today – English teacher currently living in Spain gets a pilot through BBC Entertainment’s Future Formats initiative, called Cloned.

The show doesn’t do much for me on the description – can you spot which is the real celeb from the CGI clones by (I don’t know) watching them carefully or something. It’s all a big puff piece for their initiative (it’s frankly not that exciting, it’s getting a pilot which Danny Cohen might have a look at). So why are we being told all this now, hmm?

Meanwhile, here is photo from the set of Guess the Star pilot which filmed recently. Christine Bleakley is involved in some form.

LOVED the US version

It’s slow other than Red or Black?, so here’s a heartwarming story nicked from GSNN – do you remember the non-hit John Barrowman shouty quiz The Kids Are All Right? Well it has sold to Vietnam.

Most exciting comment of the story:

The show has much popularity in countries like Poland, Chile, Argentina, Canada, Egypt,  Mexico, Holland, Norway, South Africa, the US and Portugal.

Hmm.

Oh here’s fun, according to The Guardian, two people have been removed from future Red or Black? live shows after failing background checks and will not be replaced. That means that potentially it could go from 7 to 3 to 1 couldn’t it? Do they have a contingency? How are they going to explain it?

Board of Excitement 5th-10th September 2011

By | September 5, 2011

Yes I forgot to do this yesterday. What of it?

  • The Chase – New series of this begins today with new chaser Paul Sinha off of Fighting Talk. (Weekdaily, 5pm, ITV1)
  • Red or Black – already down to the five million levels. This is on all week except Tuesday. (All week except Tuesday, 8pm and 9:30pm ITV1 and 7pm and 9:15pm Saturday)
  • Only Connect – Joggers vs Technologists. Hey, is that occasional BotherSOP participant and Krypton Factor semi-finalist Ronald Stewart there? I hope there will be lots of references to “jogging on”. (Monday, 8:30pm, BBC4)
  • Take the Money and Run – (Tuesday, ABC)
  • Minute to Win It – Reaction to McMullen appears to be overwhelmingly negative. How will it do in week two? (Tuesday, 8pm, ITV2)
  • The Million Pound Drop -Live! Hopefully with all screens working this time. (Friday, 9pm, C4)
  • Big Brother – In theory the celebrity final and the civilan beginning. It looks like a two hour final on Thursday (9pm-11pm, Thursday, Five) and the new one begins the following day (9:30pm, Friday, Five)
  • Would I Lie to You? I never really used to watch this but after enjoyed it on 24 Hour Panel People, so. (9:30pm, Friday, BBC1)
  • QI – There are still people who think this is called “chi”. (10pm, Friday, BBC2)
  • Epic Win – Someone took home money thanks to our pilot write-up this week. Oh yes. (5:25pm, Saturday, BBC1)
  • Strictly Come Dancing – the red carpet launch show (6:10pm, BBC1, Saturday)

Things Red or Black should have been more like

Juan Carlos Frasnadillo’s 2001 Spanish thriller Intacto.

(Note: trailer contains peril)

It’s about a man who can steal luck by touching them, and a man who wants his luck back by finding the luckiest man alive and challenging him to Russian Roulette. Quite interesting.

Show Discussion: Red or Black?

By | September 3, 2011

7pm and 9:15pm Saturday and variously across the week, ITV1

Well here we are then, months of speculation come to a head this week as Syco’s Red or Black? hits our screens potentially making seven millionaires.

And basically I have got no clue as to a) whether it will be any good or not or b) if it will be successful. I think if the games are quite You Bet-esque then it’sd in with a shout, and that’s initially what it sounded like, but since then we’ve seen pictures of people hoping to match a big jack in the box and picking cars and I’m not sure I see where the entertainment value in that lies.

Similarly will the excitement wear off after the first million, or will people tune in to that spin every night? Time will tell, use the comments thread for your thoughts.
