Today is a public holiday in the UK

Although I’m working, obviously. But it would explain why there’s not much happening.

The Britain’s Got Talent semi-finals begin at 7:30 on ITV1 this evening and all week culminating with the Grand Final on Sunday, if you’re that way inclined.

Board of Excitement 30th May – 5th June 2010

Christ, my head:

  • The Bother Series of Poker (8pm, Sunday, Full Tilt) Basically I am on a bit of a roll so FEAR ME. Game 9 discussion page is here, alongside discussion of future dates for the final games.
  • Mission 2010 (5:45pm, Monday, CBBC) – it appears to be the grand final, all done and dusted in half an hour. I can’t claim to have watched it beyond the first week.
  • Wipeout (Tuesday, ABC) – it’s a sneak peek two-hour episode of the new season of Wipeout, this one is a Blind Date edition, where single men and women are teamed upt o tackle the courses. The season starts proper in three weeks’ time.

And well done to Davina and her Million Pound Drop, it certainly outdid my expectations over the week.

It’s the Eurovision Grand Final!

esc2010-eurovision-logoAnd rather brilliantly, Pete Waterman’s hit back over Dr Fox’s claims that the song is a bit average.

“He doesn’t know anything, he’s not even a REAL fox,” is a quote I have just made up (actually I made it up years ago but that’s by the by), although by calling That Sounds Good To Me “average” that is vastly overstating the quality of the song reperesenting the UK this evening.

“It’s become waylaid by people trying to be serious artists. Hang on a minute, we’re here to party! This isn’t showbusiness, it’s a song contest.”

That is true! And it just so happens several other countries have written songs you’d much rather hear at a party.

I’m pulling for Germany this evening, because I stand to win £40 in the work sweepstake if Lena’s Satellite wins, which as it’s a brilliant slice of Ellis-Bextor-esque pop it just might, provided POLITICAL VOTING doesn’t rear it’s ugly head. Although she does have quite an odd way of pronouncing words.

If you’re watching at home, feel free to come along to the Bar and offer your marks out of ten, and then we can see how in step the Bother’s Bar jury is with the Eurovision. You may be able to watch outside of Europe on http://www.eurovision.tv/esctv/future. I look forward to reading the comments in the morning.

Incidentally…

After Million Pound Drop (The) on Channel 4 this evening, there’s Big Brother: The Inside Story on E4 which might be quite interesting. Might.

EDIT: Enjoyed this by the way. BB’s biggest problem these days, for me, is that it’s too much like work – an hour a night for three months? No thanks.

I’ve thought about it, and my opinion on The Million Pound Drop IS…

… that I don’t know what I think.

I wasn’t expecting people to want to chat about this daily, so feel free to use this post to discuss Friday and Saturday’s show.

There are plenty of reasons to criticise the show – poor set design choices (although the set generally is quite good), fairly boring questions, Davina pointing out how live it is every few minutes, largely thick contestants combined with a production that wants to give some money away but not too much and being a bit obvious about it. SO MUCH FAFFING.

On Wednesday night, right up until Will and Gemma blew the eighth question, I was bored.

And yet. And yet and yet and yet. I quite enjoyed last night: I really liked Dom and Ian and hoped they’d do well, and then saw two contestants lose it all on early questions, and the show seemed entertaining again.

If it didn’t get recomissioned I wouldn’t cry for it, but I wouldn’t jump for joy either. What an odd show.

In the meantime, why not go and watch a French pilot of it?
