Board of Excitement 1st January – 7th January 2012
2012, there.
- Fort Boyard: Ultimate Challenge – First British (sort of) episode in over eight years, and now with teenagers. If you missed it this morning, it’s repeated tomorrow at 5:00pm on CITV. New episodes 9am on Saturday mornings, repeated Mondays at 5pm. We saw the US broadcast and came to the conclusion it’s probably the best version of the show you’re going to do in 22 minutes, and the tournament structure helps the feeling that it’s not really all that exciting when one team goes into the end game with a massive advantage because it’s all about the long game.
- World’s Strongest Man – The Final (8pm, Sunday, Five)
- Perfection – Nick Knowles returns with the true or false quiz. (4:30pm, Weekdaily, BBC2)
- Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is – This won’t get another billing, but when I was very ill last year I ended up watching quite a lot of it and enjoying it, so. (5:15pm, Weekdaily, BBC2)
- Channel 4 Mash-Up Night – To celebrate the channel’s 30th anniversary, er, in November, Channel 4 are doing a special event night where stars of C4 shows do different Channel 4 shows. Highlights from our perspective include Davina as a contestant on The Million Pound Drop (spread throughout the evening in typical C4 irritatingness) and 8 Out Of 10 Cats doing Countdown. (From 6:30pm Monday, C4)
- Only Connect – The Stainer vs Stainer Champion of Champion of Champions smackdown we’ve all been waiting at least a year for. (8:30pm, Monday, BBC4)
- The Bank Job – Endemol’s newest hope – people answer questions and try and steal money from an apparent ACTUAL bank vault without being locked in it. The online game was fun, hopefully that will translate to the screen. Not sure about George Lamb though. (10pm weekdaily, 8:30pm Saturday, Channel 4)
- Pointless – All new episodes! It’s so difficult to keep track. They’re filming a ton of new episodes from this week, and a new round is promised. (Weekdaily from Tuesday, 5:15pm, BBC1)
- The Chase – New series, I think. (5pm, Weekdaily from Tuesday, ITV1)
- Celebrity Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? New Year’s Special – Featuring Richard Madeley and Sara Cox, Lee Mack and Stacey Solomon (can’t wait to see that) and Tom and Douggie from McFly. This one isn’t live. (9pm, Tuesday, ITV1)
- The UKGameshows.com Festive Fifty – Why not come and play poker on Thursday for free, to win actual money? Fifty quid to be given away! All the details. (Thursday, 8pm, Pokerstars)
- Celebrity Big Brother – 12 celebrities go into the house on Thursday night, and some of them will still be there in three week’s time. (9pm, Thursday, Five then variously every day on Five)
- The Magicians – Well I didn’t think the first series was all that, but it was pulling good numbers and you can’t argue with success. This year Darren McMullen (from Minute To Win It) is the new host, and the show’s going LIVE! with lots of pre-records and a viewer vote. (6:35pm, Saturday, BBC1)
- Take Me Out – No likey, no watchey. Now has its own ITV2 spin-off show. (7:30pm, Saturday, ITV2)
- The National Lottery: Who Dares Wins – God knows? No, Nick Knowles! (7:50pm, Saturday, BBC1)
- Celebrity Juice – I’ve just noticed this is getting late night repeats on ITV1. Is this new? Anyway apparently the one on next Saturday is the one with Ant and Dec on, and is not for the faint of heart or easily offended. (10:45pm, Saturday, ITV1)
Blimey, what a lot there. AND IT DOESN’T STOP THERE EITHER, we’ll be launching the Poll of 2011 later this evening. Can you wait? Well you’ll just have to.
Happy New Year!
Well this is about it for 2011 from Bother’s Bar, I’d like to wish all my Punters a happy new year. We’ll probably be launching the Poll of 2011 on the evening of the 1st, or maybe the second, IT DEPENDS ON OUR HANGOVER OBVIOUSLY.
Still, in the meantime we’ve just discovered someone appears to be chronicling Daphne Fowler’s quiz career on Youtube. There’s five episodes of Jeopardy, loads of Aussie Sale of the Century, UK Sale, and some other things like Bullseye and 15-1.
However, for all of you planning on going travelling in the new year here’s some classic 9:25 Richard Madeley action with Runway.
World’s Strongest Man
So Five are showing this year’s World’s Strongest Man (hint: if you don’t want the result spoilt, don’t search for World’s Strongest Man on Youtube. Or Google as well, probably). It’s entertaining, but in becoming more like a “proper” sport quite a lot of the fun these days has been sucked out of the event staging – instead of a large dumbbell which weighed the same as a motorbike, why isn’t it actually a motorbike?
Anyway, here’s a documentary on the competition’s glory days:

IN OTHER NEWS, I successfully defended another £11 from all comers, and I have added it to the BotherSOP winner’s pot which I intend to take home in June. But would you like one final chance to win some money to enter the BotherSOP for real? David Bodycombe and UKGameshows.com is stumping up a whopping £50 in prizemoney for one final freeroll event next Thursday, the 5th January at 8pm. All the details! You can now buy into the first event proper on Sunday 8th January as well.
Full Tilt Might Be Crooks But At Least Their Software Worked (Festive Freeroll)
We’re still in holiday mode at The Bar (you mean somtimes you aren’t? – Everyone In The World) but just a reminder because the more the merrier as far as I am concerned, the Bother’s Bar Festive Freeroll Part Two is on tomorrow (that’s Thursday night) at 8pm on Pokerstars, the BSOP12 page has all the “deets” (details). Once again I’m putting up £11 of my own personal non-fortune as a prize.
DO NOT leave it to the last minute to join the club because I have to approve your membership, and I can only do it if I’m in vicinity of my computer. And you wouldn’t want to miss out on the fun, would you?
Please note: Some people left their request to join the club until quite close to the first game where the Pokerstars servers melted and their request may not have come through. If you think that’s you then submit another request, I’ll not readily turn anyone down. Do it early to avoid disappointment! Edit: Home Game software being very slow again this evening, I’ve sent support a message. If you try and apply, it may be worth nudging me to ask if I got your request or not.
Edit Edit Edit: A reply:
Thank you for your email and for allowing us to be of assistance.
We are currently experiencing a delay with Home Games. This includes opening the Club Lobby, registering to tournaments and taking a seat in ring games.
The issue you are having has been reported to our Programming Team.
Unfortunately, we are currently unable to provide a time frame for a resolution of this issue. However, we are aware how important it is for this to be corrected and are working with haste to get it fixed.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience in dealing with this issue.
Thank you for choosing PokerStars.
Well it is fair to say this doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in the world’s biggest poker site. We will see how tomorrow goes, then make a decision as to whether to postpone the first game proper or not until we can be more sure as to whether it’s going to work properly or not. My advice: if you want to play, register in the afternoon, open your software about 19:30, you’ll be sat down at some point after the game has started. At least it hasn’t cost you anything. If you try and apply this evening, you may need to reapply tomorrow, sorry 🙁
Edit x 4: Remember once you’ve joined the club, you will need to register for the torunament (Club lobby -> Schedule -> Click the tourney on the list -> Register).
Board of Excitement – 27th December – 1st January 2012
Ah, my head.
- World’s Strongest Man – The event proper. The final is New Year’s Day. (8pm weekdaily, 7pm Saturday and Sunday, Channel 5)
- The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year 2011 – Featuring rookies Miranda Hart, Jamie Oliver and Eddie Izzard with previous contestants Davids Walliams and Mitchell and Jonathan Ross. Hosted by Jimmy Carr. (9pm, Tuesday, C4)
- The Bother Series of Poker Festive Freeroll – Play cards for free, win £11. It’s not like there’s much better to do. (8pm, Thursday, Pokerstars)
- Show and Telly – Paddy McGuinness does a 2011 TV-based quiz thing. (9pm, Thursday, ITV1)
- The Cube – Last in the series, I think. (8pm, Saturday, ITV1)
- Fort Boyard: Ultimate Challenge – we’re going to repeat our video below. We’d have preferred to put it on YouTube, but we’re still banned (yes I did check) – 7:45am simulcast on ITV1 and CITV on Sunday morning, repeated on CITV at 5pm on the Monday, for the next ten weeks.
And the following week has all sorts of excitement, there’s Channel 4’s Mash-up Night feating Davina playing The Million Pound Drop with her dad (it’s a pity she’s not playing with her Mum from the hair adverts) and 8 Out Of 10 Cats doing Countdown, The Bank Job starts Jan 2nd, as do new series of The Chase and Perfection, followed closely by Celeb Big Brother on the Thursday, and Pointless starts recording new episodes as well.
Not least the VERY EXCITING Poll Of 2011.
