Board of Excitement – 27th December – 1st January 2012

By | December 27, 2011

Ah, my head.

  • World’s Strongest Man – The event proper. The final is New Year’s Day. (8pm weekdaily, 7pm Saturday and Sunday, Channel 5)
  • The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year 2011 – Featuring rookies Miranda Hart, Jamie Oliver and Eddie Izzard  with previous contestants Davids Walliams and Mitchell and Jonathan Ross. Hosted by Jimmy Carr. (9pm, Tuesday, C4)
  • The Bother Series of Poker Festive FreerollPlay cards for free, win £11. It’s not like there’s much better to do. (8pm, Thursday, Pokerstars)
  • Show and Telly – Paddy McGuinness does a 2011 TV-based quiz thing. (9pm, Thursday, ITV1)
  • The Cube – Last in the series, I think. (8pm, Saturday, ITV1)
  • Fort Boyard: Ultimate Challenge – we’re going to repeat our video below. We’d have preferred to put it on YouTube, but we’re still banned (yes I did check) – 7:45am simulcast on ITV1 and CITV on Sunday morning, repeated on CITV at 5pm on the Monday, for the next ten weeks.

And the following week has all sorts of excitement, there’s Channel 4’s Mash-up Night feating Davina playing The Million Pound Drop with her dad (it’s a pity she’s not playing with her Mum from the hair adverts) and 8 Out Of 10 Cats doing Countdown, The Bank Job starts Jan 2nd, as do new series of The Chase and Perfection, followed closely by Celeb Big Brother on the Thursday, and Pointless starts recording new episodes as well.

Not least the VERY EXCITING Poll Of 2011.

Is it just me, or can I see The Cube going on Saturdays in 2012? TV Burp’s not coming back (I think), so it could make a decent lead-in to whatever Simon Cowell’s trying to shove in our eyes.

I’ve never really understood why it’s NOT a Saturday show. It’s never had the right feel for a Sunday, IMHO.

I was absolutely thrilled by The Big Fat Quiz’s lineup this year (especially with Miranda Hart AND David Mitchell on the show), until I saw Mr. Izzard. Why must he show up everywhere these days?

I read somewhere they wanted Sarah Millican but she was fully booked as she was appearing on every single television show she can appear on. So they plumped for Eddie Izzard.

Izzard is so much better than Millican, I’m pleased he got the part. If they’d swapped out Jamie Oliver for Charlie Brooker it would’ve been perfect.

Was it David Mitchell and Charlie Brooker that were The Curmudgeons one year? Because that one was a good year.

Pretty sure that was them. Loved David’s rant after they tried to make him and Charlie dance.

And there was me thinking you didn’t care. Tough day for scheduling, given the C4 jiggery pokery and Bank Job will steal the limelight.

It may well be my favourite episode of OC ever. There’s another special the week after, featuring three Mastermind champions, which is almost as good.

By the way, I’m going to the Pointless recording at 1.15pm on Thursday 5th, if anyone would like to tag along. Tickets still seem available.

Nope, that’s me just seeing the date just now. It will get pride of place in the New Year Board of Excitement.

Would love to go and see Pointless with you, alas I’m going on a different day. Lots of the evening ones are waiting list only though, I notice.

Unless they’ve been taken off since late October, most of the episodes of “Fort Boyard: Ultimate Challenge” that ran on Disney XD in October and November are already up on YouTube. They usually appear in two parts.

Ten episodes ran here in the States, and the other ten are supposed to appear in 2012.

My take is that this is a reasonable adaptation, considering the time slot and some of the budgetary constraints. I believe this is the first time a “Fort Boyard” show has had a half-hour time slot, so it’s good that they got in what they got in.

Guys, when exactly did Celebrity Mastermind’s SS round be 90 seconds long?

Show and Telly appears to be Big Fat Quiz with more flashiness and lack of any real humour.

Also they just did a LET’S DOUBLE THE POINT MOMENT.
      Oh God.

At least they chose a nice font to use.

Paddy’s Planner is a nice idea, ruined by the fact that the first team took so long making decisions there wasn’t any time to actually ask any questions.
