Show Discussion: The Bridge

By | October 11, 2020
*whispers* TRUST NOBODY.

Sundays, 9pm,
Channel 4

And so the show that we thought might have been a reboot of Survivor but isn’t begins, instead a UK version of a French flop where twelve people must build a 250m bridge within a time limit to a pontoon with £100,000 on it then decide amongst themselves who gets to keep it. This was actually filmed in a COVID bubble quite recently.

We can’t watch the first one live, but will watch on catch-up. Meanwhile you can leave your thoughts in a comment. If you want.

Will it build a bridge to our hearts?

This is watchable enough but would be better aired over a week.

It does seem to have format points for the sake of format points, though I quite like the first dilemma as I do think seemingly screwing over the group is actually the more beneficial thing to do for them.

It was watchable (and I believe we have a FOTB in the cast!), but ultimately will be a bit of a damp squib if they get to the Island and there’s only ~60k in the box at the end.

I don’t know whether it’s just me, but all the young males (sans Rowan) are *really* unlikeable and being set up for a downfall. It’s quite obvious what the resolution of the dilemma is looking at the next episode preview.

You’ve got me intrigued now; who should I have recognised when I watched the episode, please?

I’m *reasonably* confident that Rowan is in the game show fraternity, if not a fully-fledged FOTB. Found out when I tweeted in response to Brig about the show that he already followed me, which is usually a reasonable indicator!

Indeed, and I think he commented here about being a contestant on Cannonball, which was fair and even-handed (“I had a great time, it’s going to flop hard.”)

That’s not incredible memory, that’s having a private comment search function.

I enjoyed this significantly more than I thought I would.

I thought it was quite well produced, looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

Agree with all these, more watchable than anticipated, should probably have just been called ‘Christ, Young People’.

Three episodes in, and there’s a good half of the cast who are still quite unlikeable. It’s still surprisingly watchable though. Last two episodes are next Sunday/Monday and the TV listings spoil the ending of Episode 4, so that’s fun.

Fun fact: the French version was presented by Stéphane Rotenburg, who also presented French Mole…which flopped after one series.

I don’t usually put a tin foil hat on but of course they managed to build the bridge WITH A MINUTE TO SPARE…
