Board of Excitement 10th-16th October 2010

By | October 10, 2010

Sorry, this is a bit late this evening:

  • The Cube (7pm, ITV1, 7pm)
  • The X Factor (Tonight 8pm and Saturday basically all night, ITV1): The great thing about The X Factor on Saturday is that now it’s got about 46 different acts singing each week, it’s like having a mini-Eurovision Song Contest every weekend. Especially as one one contestant is Italian (yes I know Italy haven’t participated for a while, smartarse) and Wagner sounds as though he should be German and yet isn’t (he’s from Brazil). Also, how many of last night’s perfomances will make the OFFICIAL Top 40, now you can download them on iTunes? Also it’s a shame wildcard acts weren’t picked from other categories than the judge’s own, I think that would have been more fun.
  • Only Connect (8:30pm, Monday, BBC4): Mensans vs Bloggers, it says here.
  • The Apprentice (9pm, Wednesday, BBC1): “Everything I touch turns to sold!”. I’m currently enjoying Alan Sugar’s new book.
  • The Challenge: Cutthroat (Wednesday, MTV US): Last week had tear gas and tantrums, what’s in store this week?
  • Mission 2110 (5:45pm, Thursday, CBBC): Well I thought the first series was a bit disappointing, and I suspect the second series will have been filmed back to back, so I’m not expecting great things here. It’s a shame there’s been no Raven special series this year.

That’s what I think is interesting this week, what say you?

And the answer to the “will they make the Top 40 question” appears to be:

“To protect the integrity of the X Factor competition, sales information in relation to live contestant performances from the current season of The X Factor will not be reflected in any published sales charts.”

Premier League Poker s4 also on Channel 4 Tuesday nights for those of you who are into that thing. I really enjoyed last year’s.

Now that is exciting, especially as it was filmed almost a year ago and I’ve avoided spoilers.

When’s the Late Night Poker final then? Vicky Coren was suggesting that it’s yet to be filmed. Unless she was filming next year’s on Friday.

That I do not know. But Premier League (just seen episode one) is a bit disappointing as it appears to have turned into just another stretched out parade of non-entities who think they’re all that. No Coren/Obrestad/Dwan and (for the first couple of episodes, at least) a lot of chopping and changing between free qualifying games. Much prefer the cute 6-to-1 format of the originals.

Sorry Tim, I’m completely baffled – I can’t find Premier League Poker on Tuesday anywhere. Definitely Channel 4 you say? Their listings still suggest LNP.

Oh man, and now I’ve accidentally discovered who the winner is.

Viewers! Do not search for Premier League Poker on Google if you don’t want to know who wins!

Italy might appear in Eurovision again soon (though that’s been said since 1997.) And if it does it’d be automatically part of the Big Five.

Austria’s coming back next year apparently.

My Genius Idea, CBBC Two on Tuesday. It’s Junior Genius meets um, that thing with the inventions from a few years back. Probably.

Awesome bit from The Apprentice You’re A Bit More Fired XL: Alex declaring that he’d laid on a treat for the other candidates. It was a DVD of him doing a parachute jump. It got a… mixed reaction. (Also from the extended version: John Torode explaining that making a profit is actually very simple – you just add up your costs and multiply by three, and that’s what you need to charge. Dara immediately picked up on the potential of “Multiply by three” as a YF catchphrase, but since it got cut from the standard edit, that’s obviously not going to happen now.)

Last night Chuckles and I introduced a mutual friend to “The Cube”. We tried to run him the “trousers incident” from last series, but the upload was so slow that the bufferin’ was giving us a headache–so we went to YT and introduced him via the first show of the current series.

It’s not a show that this broken-down piano player will probably want to watch regularly. However, he did not tune out to any of it, but was paying rapt attention to the goings-on on screen. As he has no real spatial sense (result of congenital eye problems), he figures he’d be a non-starter in any of the games that require throwing or catching a ball. The only game he thought he might have a chance at was the one with five hundred little balls that had to be emptied from a box in twenty seconds.

We’re hoping to introduce him to “The Crystal Maze” soon.

The Bloggers on tonight’s OC are the lovely folk from http://www.lowculture.co.uk

On a ratings tip, show 4 weighed in at 572,000 which I think is a record for us, and is the third time we were the most-watched show on BBC4 in the week.

That’s very good, especially as I would have suspected Only Connect and Masterchef would have a broadly similar demographic.

But on the upside, I think we got quite a good slice of the people who used to be watching Antiques Master.

Sorry, didn’t know it existed, but will download and review for next week.

I was hoping people would recommend things to review in the general Ipod, Therefore… comment box. I’ve still got five/six things I’ve already got to get through, Bullseye coming tomorrow or Wednesday.

Have you given this website a plug before:
    http://www.puzzgrid.com/
Only just come across it. It’s like sporcle, but for connecting walls – how awesome! OK – the quality isn’t close to DJB/walls on the show/walls on the website. But a nice engine nonetheless.

I’m surprised no one picked up on Cowell massive clunker on Saturday night. He said that ‘One Sweet Day’, wasn’t a US number 1.

It was, in fact, number 1 for 14 weeks in the US and broke records at the time for weeks spent at the top.
