Round-up 13th Jan ’10

By | January 13, 2010

Were you one of those people who who were constantly surprised about John and Edward doing quite well in The X Factor, wondering how a mildly entertaining act was getting higher votes than, for example, Rikki? Were you one of those people who genuinely believed John and Edward were going to win, despite the fact all the comedy acts tend to get eliminated towards the end every year, and the official results suggested they were never really in the running anyway?

Christ, you must feel like a MASSIVE idiot.

More importantly, Vanilla Ice wants to release Ice Ice Baby as a collaboration with J and E, truly it will be the most important collaboration since 5ive and Queen’s We Will Rock You.

The Krypton Factor down to 3m last night apparently, that’s not much of a drop off. I predict if it stays above 2.5m it’s probably safe, what with its ABC1s and communists-who-won’t-watch-things-with-adverts-in audience. That is my professional industry opinion.

Meanwhile, what has happened to Accumulate!, hmm? We were promised new episodes after Christmas, it’s getting as bad as that 22 second gap between “the winner of The X Factor is…” and a name being read out.

Meanwhile, Endemol are now casting for 101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow. You can decide for yourself as to whether this is a hilarious viral or not.

Also! Lost in TV are doing tickets for The Cube, both UK and Saudi Arabian versions! Exciting.

Considering it doesn’t cost ITV a penny, I think it’s safe as long as SAGE make it – though I don’t really see how it benefits them. They’re already the market leader in what they do and you’d think any business that wants SAGE would already have it, and not make their decision based on The Krypton Factor!

That’s all well and good, but it must have been doing something right to get a second series, but they’ll be a tipping point where it becomes not worth it, a la BingoLotto.

I expect the ratings to fall slightly as the run continues. Four rounds will soon get too samey, I fear.

The winner of last night’s show won with a KF of 25! For afficianados, the lack of intelligence cheapens the show from its heyday value.

Yes there is usually a drop-off, the question lies in how big its core audience is.

I don’t think anyone is arguing that New K-Fac is as good as the original – by most objective and subjective criteria it loses out by comparison. But that is not to say it still does many things well and there’s still an entertaining show to be found. They listened to the audience last time regarding the assault course, who is to say the show won’t add in or improve other things if Sage want to do a third series? But I do get slightly annoyed by people who go “wah, it’s not EXACTLY THE SAME as it was 16-17 years ago, therefore it’s COMPLETELY RUBBISH” for a show that regularly changed its line-up over almost twenty years anyway. I think the show’s heart is basically in the right place, even if some of its choices are a bit misguided sometimes.

The current format is a good show, just not quite as good as the old format. Most of the minor niggles were fixed, which compensates for the loss of the Intelligence round between the two series (annoyingly). Hopefully they can reintroduce that for next year’s hypothetical series and… While I still don’t think it’ll be as good as the old, it’ll probably be very, very close.

…I still wish they could fit in room for the response round as well, mind, even if it wasn’t in the form of a flight simulator.

I agree the television show runs neatly as is, even without intelligence. However, the absence of this round weakens the show as a challenge competition. It was iconic and a really cerebral test.

Maybe their expansion rate had slowed, due to new businesses not taking them up?

I’m going to do some HARDCORE STATS regarding the weighting of the general knowledge round when I get in this evening. And by hardcore, I mean not very hardcore.

Last night’s winner excelled through Observation and General Knowledge performance. Was hopeless at assault course! Not quite sure to make of this – would have loved an intelligence test in there as a further safeguard towards determining the most deserving winner.

So a win by a small margin – one general knowledge question in fact – when getting in to answer this ahead of another contestant comes down to mere milliseconds at times, depending on how quick you are on the buzzer. Intelligence tests another cerebral facet across a longer, and so perhaps more representative, period.

But she scored nine for the round, whereas the other guy scored barely any. That seems pretty fair enough to me.

            I’m not so sure.

Increasing the rounds by 25% i.e. keeping intelligence, would help immeasurably.

No good reason for why it was removed.

I’m not certain of your point. That Intelligence should be there? Well I’m not going to argue against that.

          3. RegionalVariation

Consider this:, if a little simplistic:
The best at MA – can gain max 10 points, +4 more than rival
            Obs – ditto
            PA – ditto
General knowledge – potentially 16-18 points if answer all correct ahead of any one else.

Thus too much weight for GK. Further rounds needed.

Accumulate! is back, hooray! Episode 5 was uploaded to our NEW WEBSITE http://www.ruon.tv .

We’re now in the Semi-finals, the winner of this match proceeds directly to the finals, and does not have to face thirteen other matches winning precisely six of them, to get through. So there.
