Board of Excitement 27th March – 2nd April 2011

By | March 27, 2011

Well I hate BST already, let’s see what’s on this week:

  • The Bother Series of Poker Game 6 – likely to have fewer people than normal this evening so feel free to join in if you fancy a game. Here’s the post game discussion page. (8pm BST/3pm Eastern, Sunday, Full Tilt)
  • Double Cross – Had a fun time watching this get made live on Thursday night, will be intrigued to hear the final edit. It may be a bit messy. (Monday, iTunes)
  • The Million Dollar Drop – It’s not doing that brilliantly, who could have predicted? (Monday and Thursday, Channel Nine in Australia)
  • Accumulate – it’s the grand final! I think! (Friday, RU:ON)
  • Schlag den Raab – it’s been a little while since the last one. Hopefully Stefan Raab won’t break his hand this week as he defends half a million Euro. (7:15 BST/8:15 CET+1, Saturday, ProSieben and hopefully naughty internet streaming).
  • Live Celebrity Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Mother’s Day Special – The first of six live episodes this year after the relative success of the Christmas one. Features David Walliams and his mum, Olly Murs and his mum and Patsy Palmer and son. The home viewer game where you can win half of what the celebs win for their charities also makes a return. (8:25pm, Saturday, ITV1)

And The Cube series three begins next Sunday, but it’s not leading into anything so it’s hard to see it topping 4.5m really.

I’m ever so slightly surprised that there’s been almost no talk on here about last night’s Secret Fortune.

Of course, a £100k win on SF is far more likely than a £250k win on DOND – but also, the first question was all about game shows and their hosts…

Naturally, only the main hosts were considered – so Carol S, Jenny P and Terri on WoF, Penny Smith on KF ’95, and Anthea Redfern, Isla St Clair, Rosemarie Ford et cetera on the Generation Game were all out of the equation.

Secret Fortune’s ratings collapsed yesterday, below 5m. It was relying on Let’s Dance giving it a good inheritence, it can’t cope on its own.

Nice spin but nearly all the programmes last night suffered a dip, it wasn’t just Secret Fortune.

Hmm, I think it is reasonable to point out actually – it has been shedding viewers week on week and without the lead-in it’s just done OK. That suggests a lot of people aren’t tuning in for it specifically.

Looking at BARB, it’s only been shedding around 100K-200K for the first five shows, while it’s been steady around 5.9-6.0 million. Last night saw the first signifficent dip. Those on DS are in agreement the whole Saturday night schedule was very low in terms of ratings (could it be the Euro 2012 qualifiers effect?). I think the BBC will be happy after last night in comparison to the other ratings.

We shall see for the final three shows and whether the Let’s Dance/Rugby combo did help them for the first few shows.

I think the night being down is a myth, everything was getting pretty much what it had been getting before last week with the rugby, except SYTYCD is significantly down on what Let’s Dance was getting (and, indeed, what itself was getting last year) and Secret Fortune which was overperforming and now getting the sort of unspectacular ratings it is more in line with.

Why do I get the impression you don’t like Secret Fortune and probably never will? 😉 😉 😉

I just don’t like TV shows which take “ingredients” of other programmes and then becomes popular. Secret Fortune is not original, at all!

Just out of interest what would you get if you crossed the multiple choice and potentially winning a million pounds of WWTBAM, and the placing of things over zones that sink down if the answer is wrong and having to make sure the right answer is covered to stay in the game of Duel? You must really hate a show like that.

Extra credit question – name a gameshow that has no elements in common with any parlour game or any other gameshow at all

          2. Alex

Is from the original Mr & Mrs, sorry.

          3. The Banker's Nephew

And The Newlywed Game (even if it was after the original Mr. and Mrs.)

Gladiators, perhaps? I keep coming back to sport-based shows, since they’re less likely to have a quiz or luck element in them.

            Good point.

As well as We Are The Champions, because I don’t think people normally have swimming pools in their parlors.

            Fluke

Trust Me, I think, broke a mould, and scrapes through the constraints on the grounds that game theory (*) is not a parlour game.

(*) No, no, not Prisoner’s Dilemma; that has specific constraints about the relative sizes of the payouts that Trust Me, Shafted, Golden Balls, Friend or Foe (etc., if there are others) do not obey.

          7. The Banker's Nephew

Aaaaaaand lets you split your money in the same vain as “Success Assured,” or whatever it was called.

            Not if it’s produced by Endemol though. 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉
